Sensors for precision timing HEP Adi Bornheim For the Caltech Precision Timing group 2/10/2016 Adi Bornheim, Meeting with Hamamatsu 1
Introduction & Overview We develop detectors for high energy physics detectors (ionizing particles with energies in the GeV to TeV range) with very good timing precision (10 ps and below) : SiPM as photo sensors coupled to scintillators We use LYSO and PbWO crystals. Primary signal rise time order 10 ps, decay time few 10 ns. Photo sensor either coupled directly to a crystal or via light guides, possibly including wave length shifting. MCPs as photo sensors OR primary sensors. 2/10/2016 Adi Bornheim, Meeting with Hamamatsu 2
LYSO SH Cell Timing & Capillaries MCP Hamamatsu Reference MCP LYSO cube LYSO/W Shashslik SiPMs Beam Hodoscope 2/10/2016 Adi Bornheim, Meeting with Hamamatsu 3
Fiber light guides on SiPM Light from 29 LYSO tiles (14x14x1.5 mm) collected in four fibers. Each fiber coupled to a SiPM. Number of photons is such that each SiPM pixel might be hit by more than one photon per primary scintillation light pulse. SiPM saturation. 2/10/2016 Adi Bornheim, Meeting with Hamamatsu 4
Light extraction from LYSO tiles SiPM clear fiber coupler tube WLS Usage of wave length shifter modifies time structure of the pulse, lengthening the rise time of the pulse for a few ns. 2/10/2016 Adi Bornheim, Meeting with Hamamatsu 5
1 : 3x3 mm SiPM, 1st batch 2 : 3x3 mm SiPM, 2nd batch 3 : 1x1 mm SiPM, 2nd batch 4 : 1x1 mm SiPM, 1nd batch Measured Rise Times SiPMs + WLS Rise time measured for pulses with 4 different Hamamatsu SiPMs. Convolution of all the effects mentioned before, but see fastest rise time with small pixel size and least saturation. 2/10/2016 Adi Bornheim, Meeting with Hamamatsu 6
Time Resolution 2/10/2016 Adi Bornheim, Meeting with Hamamatsu 7
First look at Timing with SiPMs Sum of 2 MCPs, front and back readout. Sum of 4 SiPMs, one per fiber, front readout 2/10/ Adi Bornheim, Meeting with Hamamatsu 8
SiPM with fast laser Differential time resolution from laser pulse with 50 ps width onto two SiPMs. 10um and 15um pixel size. 2/10/2016 Adi Bornheim, Meeting with Hamamatsu 9
MCP as a photo sensor. Simulation pulse shape arriving at APD Measurement with MCP & reflective tube coupling. 2/10/2016 Adi Bornheim - ECAL Upgrade Week 10
Summary Interest in SiPMs with smallest possible pixel sizes (10 mu and below) with largest possible pixel number. Plans for a test with a 25 channel prototype. Discuss option to get either 25 SiPMs of one type or two sets of different pixel size/count. New MCP to be tested by us already agreed upon. 2/10/2016 Adi Bornheim, Meeting with Hamamatsu 11
To be double checked : Exact specs of SiPMs we have. 1x1 SiPM : one C (10000 pixels) and one C (4489 pixels)? 3x3 SiPM : to be checked : Do we have S P and -050P?
