But n actual fact, the thrll of new begnnngs has been a constant theme for our company startng wth ts creaton n 1923, founded by the brothers Dr. Segmund and Davd Loewe as a rado engneerng busness n Berln, and contnung to drve our development today. The best example of ths s the completely redesgned Loewe Connect, featured n ths magazne. A new ncarnaton but stll dstnctvely Loewe. Dd you know that, back n 1931, Loewe played an nstrumental role n the world s frst publc televson broadcast? Made possble thanks to the research work of Manfred von Ardenne, Loewe s Chef Engneer, who later went on to become a world-famous physcst. After nventng televson, the natural next step s to enhance and mprove your creaton: for example, by ntroducng even more flexble recordng and playback optons (pages 6 13). Not forgettng amazng sound qualty, wth a 5.1 audo decoder fully ntegrated n the TV rather than offered as an optonal extra (page 25). 7 In ancent tmes our ancestors gathered together around a fre. More recently, our generaton too regularly gathered around a flckerng focal pont ths tme the televson. Always at specfc tmes, to watch old favourtes lke Star Trek, Columbo or The Avengers But today we are no longer bound by the TV schedule. We can stll enjoy our favourte programmes, but at a tme and place of our choosng. Generally on our comfortable sofa, wth the televson transformed nto a smart entertanment hub. Pck and choose, up to three tmes: That s the beauty of Loewe Mult Recordng. Pause lve televson... and then pck up where you left off n a dfferent room. Whle the adults made themselves comfortable on the sofa wth a glass of wne, the younger generaton would set up camp on the floor, complete wth pllows and blankets. After patently sttng through the news, the eagerly antcpated moment arrved, as the popular Dutch entertaner Rud Carrell stepped nto our lvng rooms. He sang and joked wth contestants, even allowed them to snp off the odd lock of har from tme to tme. Anythng to make Saturday evenng go wth a swng! Am Laufenden Band was a lve game show for all the famly that attracted record ratngs from 1974 untl It was frm favourte wth TV crtcs and vewers alke, and a sure-fre wnner at all the TV award ceremones. Rud Carrell s nspraton for the concept was the Dutch show enttled Eén van de Acht, frst ared n Four couples two generatons of two dfferent famles a grandmother and grandson, or father and son competed to wn an eclectc collecton of przes. From an umbrella stand to a knttng The new Loewe Connect s now usherng n even more flexble recordng optons. Loewe Mult Recordng allows you to record two televson programmes smultaneously on the ntegrated Loewe DR+ 1-TB hard dsk. In many cases, you can even watch a thrd channel n parallel, explans Loewe software developer Stefan Schedel. To acheve ths, we make clever use of our two tuners. These tuners are desgned to work ndependently on fully dgtsed sgnal processng, contnues Schedel. The only possble restrctons are the type of connecton or legal provsons. Say farewell to the days of mpossble choces between your favourte crme seres and a sports broadcast and frustratng schedulng clashes!

An nfographc showng our changng meda habts and the hstory of televson. 790,000 BC 1934 It wasn t qute the cnema experence we know today, but t was perhaps a taste of thngs to come. When the world s frst regular hgh-resoluton qualty (180 lnes per pcture) broadcast started n Berln back n 1934, practcally no-one had a televson. So people used to assemble n publc televson rooms. Three tmes a week for two hours each tme that was the extent of the schedulng. In 1929, the BBC began broadcastng a regular low-resoluton test programme (between 30 and 60 lnes per pcture). 1940s France was the only country n Europe to broadcast wthout nterrupton durng the Second World War. In the Unted Kngdom, there was a sevenyear break n transmssons followng the outbreak of the war. Whle n Germany, screens were swtched off for eght years after The offcal launch of colour televson n Brtan and Germany. Commercal televson was nvented of course by the Amercans. The frst broadcastng lcences were sold at the start of July 1941, and the frst televson ad was ared the very same day: runnng for one hour. The UK lcensed commercal televson n 1954, wth France and Italy also runnng prvate broadcastng trals by then. It took a lttle longer for the frst commercal TV channels to arrve n Germany, 1984 to be precse. The number of televson broadcasters has ncreased exponentally snce the 1980s, now standng at over 8,000 around the world

9 It s not qute clear when exactly people frst began to use fre. The oldest fnd to date, n today s Israel, dates back to 790,000 years BC. Dscovered n Span and Indonesa, the oldest cave pantngs were created around 40,000 BC. People used to gather around the fre, enjoy the warmth and tell stores. And wonder at the way the pantngs on the walls seemed to come to lfe n the flckerng lght of the fre The physcst Manfred von Ardenne, at the tme Loewe s Chef Engneer, transmtted the frst electronc mages, wth a raster of 100 lnes for 20 pcture changes per second. We watch what we want, at a tme and place of our choosng. The televson entered the Internet age some tme ago: allowng us to look at dgtal photos, lsten to musc, stream flms and TV seres and even surf for vdeo clps. In ts new ncarnaton as a control centre, t remans a focal pont: lke the campfre n days gone by. 9

10 machne, or even envelopes of cash all passng before ther eyes along a conveyor belt. Ths bg Saturday evenng show was essental vewng, a weekly rtual n homes all over the country. And not just n Germany. In the UK and France too, famles gathered around the televson, wth vewng fgures of over 60 percent by no means unusual. And back at work on Monday mornng, t was the only topc of conversaton unheard of today, unless of course t s the World Cup fnal. Back then, the televson was not smply a mass medum. However, the sem-relgous Saturday evenng gatherng s becomng a thng of the past replaced by an ncredble varety of ndvdual preferences. How dd ths abundance of choce come to exst? That s easy: commercal televson channels, cable and satellte broadcasters and not least the Internet! Over the last three decades, techncal progress has drven major changes n our vewng habts: each and every one of us can choose what we want to see, and when we want to see t and we are bombarded wth choce. Over the last few decades, the number of televson channels has rsen exponentally. Wth more than 8,000 channels now broadcastng around the world. Not forgettng optons through DVD, BluRay, Web and vdeo streamng. We don t smply watch whatever happens to be on. We pck and choose very carefully, dependng on our ndvdual nterests. Wth more than 8,000 channels Our changng lfestyles have also affected our vewng habts: tradtonal roles and career paths are no longer the norm. Today s workng patterns are far more flexble, and not always compatble wth schedulng constrants. 87 per cent of people n the UK, 84 per cent n Germany and 83 per cent n France have an Internet connecton. Meanng that they are no longer compelled at least n theory to watch programmes at scheduled transmsson tmes. In today s changng world, ntegrated hard dsk recorders and onlne meda lbrares allow you to catch up on mssed programmes the next day, or even the next month, f you happen to mss a favourte show because you re out wth frends. 87 per cent Of course, we stll need compatble devces to record and watch these programmes on.
