9 Setting Up Your Remote The remote control can be programmed to control any TV with a simple three-digit code that corresponds to the specific model. To program your remote: 1. Turn on your TV. 2. Hold both the TV button and the SEL button on your remote for 5 seconds. The io button will turn red this means it is ready to be programmed. 3. Point the remote control toward the TV and enter the first three-digit code listed for your TV (refer to the chart below). If the code is correct, your TV will turn off after the code is entered. 4. Press the TV button once again. The io button will blink twice to confirm that the code has been stored. If you ve entered the correct code, you should be able to turn the TV back on using the TV button. You should also be able to control the TV s volume from your remote. If the code does not work, repeat steps 2-4 until you find the right code. If none of these codes work, try 000 (default code). Press SEL to add the highlighted channel to the current favorites list on the right. Press SEL again to remove a channel from your favorites. Press A to accept your new list of Favorite Channels and return to the General Settings menu. Press EXIT to return to watching TV. Press A to select Browse By on your screen. Use ARROW keys to select Channel, Theme or Title. Press SEL for a listing of programs. Press ARROW keys to move through the programs/channels. 11 I want to Order Pay Per View with my Optimum TV remote (up to 72 hours in advance of the start time of event) Note: This ordering method is currently not available with the Samsung cable box. Simply On Demand View list of On Demand Press the io button and select On Demand Programming from the Main Menu and press SEL or tune Channel 500. Use ARROW keys to select an On Demand category of your choice, then press SEL. Order an On Demand title Select the category from the On Demand list, then press SEL. Use ARROW keys to highlight a title, then press SEL. Use ARROW keys to go to Next Title, Preview, or Order. To order, you may be prompted to enter your PIN (see Parental Control section on page 12 for more info). Using a Samsung digital cable box, simply: Tune to PPV channels 792 (for high definition) or 92 or 93 (for standard definition). In Bridgeport, New Haven and Norwalk, tune to channel 107 or 108. Press SEL and follow the on-screen instructions. Note: If you set up a Purchase PIN, you will be prompted to enter it here. Using a Scientific Atlanta digital cable box, simply: Press the io or Guide button. Choose Channel Guide from the Optimum menu. Tune to PPV channels 792 (for high definition) or channels 92 or 93 (for standard definition). In Bridgeport, New Haven and Norwalk, tune to channel 107 or 108. Using the ARROW keys, find the future event you want to purchase. Press SEL on the highlighted program and follow the on-screen instructions. A green $ symbol will appear in the upper right corner of the Main Menu, which indicates the event has been successfully purchased. it s easy to store and surf your favorite channels? TV 11

12 TV Features from Optimum continued Channel guide symbols Symbol Description Current channel is blocked. Parental Control is on. or Current channel is blocked, but Parental Control is off. Closed Captioned. The channel has subtitles for hearing-impaired viewers. This option applies only to channels that offer closed captioning. Second Audio Programming (SAP). This indicates that the channel offers additional audio, such as a second language. SAP only applies to channels that offer second audio. Note: If you have SAP enabled and experience no sound on some channels, disable SAP. The channel transmits in stereo sound. The channel is included in your list of favorite channels. Indicates purchase of a Pay Per View event. A timer is set to record this program. A reminder timer is set for this program. The program is a Pay Per View event. The program is broadcast in High Definition (HD). Parental Controls Optimum TV gives you full control over what programming your family sees, and allows you to set a code to prevent unwanted viewing or purchases on your account. Setting up your Block PIN Note: You must set up a BLOCK PIN for each digital cable box in your household. 1. Press SETTINGS twice. 2. At the General Settings menu, press ARROW keys to highlight Block: PIN, then press SEL. 3. Use ARROW keys to highlight Enable, then press SEL. 4. Enter a new PIN. 5. Re-enter new PIN for confirmation. 6. Press EXIT to return to watching TV. Once your BLOCK PIN has been created, you will be able to block programming by channel or by rating. Blocking by channel or rating Note: Follow procedures on all digital cable boxes in your household. Block by rating is your best protection against unauthorized viewing of content you deem unsuitable for other household members, but there are other methods available. Please refer to the General Settings to find additional options. I want to block a specific channel. 1. Press SETTINGS twice. 2. At the General Settings menu, press ARROW keys to highlight Block: Channel, then press SEL. 12

13 3. Press ARROW keys to select the channels you wish to block. 4. Press SEL to block the highlighted channel. The blocked channels will display on the right. 5. Press A to accept the changes. 6. Parental Blocks do not take effect until you turn on the Parental Control feature using the Quick Settings menu. To turn the Parental Control feature on, press SETTINGS on your remote. Use ARROW keys to highlight Turn ON Parental Control and press SEL. Enter your PIN. This will activate the Parental Control on the channels you have selected previously. I want to block shows with certain ratings. 1. Press SETTINGS twice. 2. At the General Settings menu, press ARROW keys to highlight Block: Rating, then press SEL. 3. Press ARROW keys to highlight the rating you wish to block, then press SEL. 4. Repeat step 3 above for ALL ratings that you wish to be blocked. 5. Parental Blocks do not take effect until you enable the Parental Control feature using the Quick Settings menu. To enable the Parental Control feature, press SETTINGS on your remote. Use ARROW keys to highlight Turn ON Parental Control and press SEL. Enter your PIN. This will activate the Parental Control on the channels you have selected previously. Optimum gives you complete control over what your family watches? Set up or change your Purchase Personal Identification Number (PIN) A Purchase PIN is required to help secure your account against unauthorized viewing. It is strongly recommended that you follow these instructions to change the temporary Purchase PIN set up for you during installation (3333). You must set up a Purchase PIN for each digital cable box in your household. 1. Press SETTINGS twice. 2. At the General Settings menu, press ARROW keys to highlight Purchase PIN, then press SEL. Please note: If Purchase PIN is not listed as a menu item, call Customer Support to activate this feature, then continue the steps below. 3. Press ARROW keys to highlight Enable or Change, then press SEL. 4. Enter a new PIN. If you are changing your PIN, enter the current PIN first. 5. Re-enter new PIN for confirmation. 6. Press EXIT to return to watching TV. TV 13

14 DVR DVR allows you to record your favorite movies and shows. Recording TV shows I want to record a show I m watching right now. 1. Press REC. You ll see a message on the screen asking you to confirm. 2. Using the ARROW keys, select All Episodes or One Episode. You can also edit the start/stop times and select how long to save the recording. 3. A red light REC on the front of your digital cable box confirms you are recording. If you wish to stop recording at any time, simply press STOP and follow the on-screen choices. 4. Press A to confirm recording options. I want to record a program from the Channel Guide. 1. Press the io button, then select Channel Guide. 2. Use the ARROW keys to highlight the TV program you want to record, and press REC. 3. A message will be shown on screen asking you to select All Episodes or One Episode. You can also edit the start/stop times and select how long to save the recording. I want to record a show each time it comes on. 1. Press the io button, then select Channel Guide. 2. Use the ARROW keys to highlight the TV program you want to record, and press REC. 3. When the menu choices appear on screen, select All Episodes. Another screen will appear with options for All Episodes recording, including New First Run Only on This Channel. 4. Select an option and press A to save your choice. DVR service requires a Scientific Atlanta digital cable box with DVR capabilities at additional charge. 14

15 Watching your recorded shows I want to watch a program I recorded. 1. Press DVR. 2. Use ARROW keys to select a program you want to play back. 3. Press SEL to play back your option. Enjoying the DVR Picture-in- Picture feature Keep an eye on the ball game while watching your favorite show with Picture-in-Picture from DVR. I want to watch two shows at the same time. DVR allows you to pause live TV, record shows and watch two programs at the same time? 1. While watching a show, press PIP ON-OFF to activate the PIP screen. A small picture will appear at the top of your television. 2. You can change the channel in the PIP box using the PIP CH+ and PIP CH- buttons. I want to swap the program playing in the PIP screen to the main screen. 1. Simply press the PIP Swap button. I want to move the PIP screen. 1. If the PIP screen is blocking an important part of the main screen, simply press PIP MOVE to cycle through the four options for placement. Note: DVR features such as pause, record, rewind and fast-forward control the video that is playing in the main screen. Audio will only play for the program on the main screen. TV 15

16 Manage Your DVR Online Use the Optimum App to control your DVR. Customers who subscribe to TV and Internet can browse, schedule and organize recordings, search by keyword and more with the Optimum App. It s easy to search and record your favorite TV shows while you re on the go, using an iphone, ipad, Android device or laptop. How do I register my DVR? The first step is to register your DVR with optimum.net. If you have an Optimum ID, you re already halfway there. If you need to create an Optimum ID, see page Using your Optimum ID and password, log on to optimum.net and click on the io DVR icon. 2. Click on the DVR tab. A box will appear asking you to agree to the terms and activate the service. How do I schedule recordings online? 1. Once you ve activated your DVR for online access, log on to optimum.net and click on the TV tab. 2. Click on the program you wish to record. A window with a description will appear. 3. On the right side of this pop-up window under Record to io DVR, select: This Episode or All Episodes Which DVR to record to (if more than one DVR is available) Edit the Start and Stop time of the recording Edit the Save Time 4. Click Record to DVR. Your recording is now scheduled. How do I view my scheduled and recorded shows? 1. Once you ve activated your DVR for online access, log on to optimum.net and click on the io DVR icon. 2. Click DVR, then select Recorded Programs to see a list of programs already recorded on your DVR, or Scheduled Recordings to see what s scheduled to record. DVR service requires a Scientific Atlanta digital cable box with DVR capabilities at additional charge. Subscription to Optimum Online and an Optimum ID is required. 17 Self Help & Customer Support If: Picture freezes or digital cable box will not respond Solution: Wait 30 seconds without pushing any buttons on the remote. If the digital cable box still does not respond, it may need to be rebooted. To reboot, simultaneously press VOL+, VOL- and INFO on the front of the digital cable box and hold until it shuts down, then release the buttons. The digital cable box will automatically reset. The reboot process may take up to 3 minutes. During the reboot process, you will see a series of messages. Press CBL on the remote to turn on the digital cable box. There may be a slight delay while the menu screen loads. When the front panel on the digital cable box displays the time, the reboot is complete. if you forget to DVR your favorite show, you can set it online? No picture No sound/low volume Make sure that the TV is turned on and the input is set to the digital cable box. Verify that all cables are properly and securely connected. If the digital cable box is plugged into an outlet connected to a wall switch, make sure it is in the ON position. Verify that the digital cable box power light is on. Verify that any additional equipment (e.g., VCR, DVD or stereo) is properly connected to the digital cable box. Verify that the mute button is not pressed on your television remote control, your Optimum remote control or home theater remote if you have one. Verify that the volume is turned up. Volume may be adjusted directly from the digital cable box and the TV or Optimum remote. Verify that any additional equipment (e.g., VCR, DVD or stereo) is properly connected to the digital cable box. TV 17

18 If: Remote does not work The front panel of the digital cable box displays question marks instead of the channel number TV screen displays a message indicating that the digital cable box is automatically updating its software Solution: Make sure you have fresh AA batteries in your TV remote. To test your batteries, press any button on your remote and the io button will light up. Verify that the remote has been programmed to work with your TV. See the Setting up Your Optimum TV Remote and DVR Remote on page 9 for details on programming your remote. Reboot your digital cable box for the latest update of programming information. See Picture freezes or digital cable box will not respond on page 17 for instructions on how to restart the digital cable box. Optimum TV periodically sends updates with the latest programming information to your digital cable box These updates may cause a slight interruption in your service. When the front panel displays the time, the update is complete and you can watch TV again. HD setup and service HD picture format setup: Samsung model digital cable box 1. Press the power button on the Samsung HD digital cable box and turn on your HDTV. The default picture format setting on the HD digital cable box is 640x480p Normal. 2. In order to get the best display for your HDTV, press SETTINGS twice on your Optimum remote to get to the General Settings. 3. Use ARROW keys and highlight Set: Picture Format. Arrow to the right, and scroll to 1920x1080i Normal or 1280x720p Normal. 4. Press A on your TV remote to accept, and then press EXIT to exit from the settings menu. 5. Go to the menu on your HDTV and set the Picture Format to 16:9. You're now ready to enjoy your favorite programming. 24 Self Help & Customer Support Can t get online? Reset your modem Unplug the power from your modem (if you are using a battery backup, you ll also need to disconnect the battery from the modem). Plug the modem back in and wait until it has fully restarted. This can take a few minutes. (If you are using a battery backup, reconnect the battery to the modem.) If you have a router Unplug the modem and router s power cord from the wall outlet and wait 1-2 minutes. Some router models have a standby button; be sure that the standby button is not activated. Plug the modem in first, then the router. Check your connections Check and tighten the cable connection from the wall and to the back of the cable modem. Also, check any Ethernet or USB cables connected to your computer and cable modem. If you have a router Check the Ethernet cables and make sure they are securely connected to the proper receptacles on the router, modem and computer. If connections are not secure, unplug them all and plug them back in again. Wireless enabled devices may not communicate with a wireless router without the use of an Ethernet cable between the device and router. Ethernet port light or the Internet light does not light When the Ethernet connection is made, check the following: Make sure the Ethernet cable connections are secure at the router and at the modem or computer. Make sure the power is turned on to the connected modem or computer. Be sure you are using the correct cable. When connecting the router s Internet port to a cable modem, use the cable that was supplied with the cable modem. Home Network Setup using DigiDo networking software If you have an Advanced Wireless Router, you will need to perform a Home Network Setup on your primary PC by inserting the Wireless Home Networking Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive (or download from optimum.net/router_install). Follow the easy wizard instructions to secure your wireless network. If you would like to install DigiDo on additional computers, insert the Wireless Home Networking Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive of each additional computer and the wizard will guide you through the process. This software will assist in the set up of the network, provide auto-healing capabilities and assist Customer Support in troubleshooting your network. 24

25 There is a connection problem DigiDo Error message If you have an Advanced Wireless Router, DigiDo home networking software will attempt to fix any connection issues automatically on your primary PC. If it cannot fix it automatically, the software icon in the task bar will show a red x and a pane in the upper right corner of the software screen will be red. By left-clicking, you will be guided through a fast and easy troubleshooting guide that will help you identify and fix the problem. If your problem still exists, it may be necessary to shut down your cable modem connection and wireless router. This is similar to resetting your computer. To reset your cable modem and router, simply unplug both devices from the wall outlet. Wait 1-2 minutes, plug in your modem, wait until it is powered up, then plug in your router.
