Thank You! Thank you and congratulations on acquiring the WeatherBug HDCam system. The WeatherBug HDCam captures images of local weather conditions with the advantage of a much higher resolution than with cameras previously offered. The quality of the images from the WeatherBug HDCam is sure to enhance the benefit of your weather system. With very little configuration required, setup for this camera is straightforward and fast. By installing and operating the entire WeatherBug system, you become an essential part of the WeatherBug program, an integrated network of weather stations comprising the largest weather monitoring system in the world. You can monitor a high-quality, live image from the camera using most web browsers connected to a Local Area Network (LAN). The maximum frame rate is 30 frames per second (FPS). Captured images are also available through the internet at Release 1, Version June 2008
Plan Ahead Read this entire manual before beginning installation. Retain this manual for future reference for any staff member who may operate the weather station, now or in the future. The WeatherBug HDCam installation can be straightforward and easy to complete if all steps are followed closely. In order to ensure the most efficient installation possible, you MUST follow the steps in Indoor Preliminary Setup BEFORE installing ANY equipment outdoors. The most important aspect of preparation is safety. Installation of the HDCam requires working with electrical cable, drilling through walls or other dense support structures, standing on ladders, and, possibly, walking on roofs. Please carefully read the section below on Safety. Please pay close attention to the section on Site Evaluation. A complete site evaluation determines proper placement of the camera and will prevent the need to have to re-mount the camera and re-route the cables. All additional parts needed (such as ladders, drills, bits, etc.) should be assembled and inspected before beginning installation. WeatherBug cannot accept responsibility for damage caused by these tools so all safety precautions should be adhered to. This would include the use of leather gloves and goggles when appropriate. If there are any questions, doubts, or discrepancies, call WeatherBug Weather Station Technical Support at (800) or support@aws.com. Safety! (Please see Troubleshooting, Maintenance, and Additional Information in this document) Only qualified personnel should install the HDCam. While installation of the HDCam is not particularly difficult, it does usually require installation near the rooftop and working with electrical wiring, which presents some amount of risk. To limit risk to self and property, this manual should be thoroughly read and understood before beginning installation. Adhere to all warnings on the unit and in the operating instructions Release 1, Version June 2008
Installation must conform to national, state, and local building code requirements with the most stringent guidelines being adhered to. The HDCam should only be installed by someone comfortable with being on a high ladder or rooftop and who is authorized by the site to perform the installation. Roof and ladder safety is crucial! Allow only qualified Electricians to make electrical connections. Take all reasonable safety precautions double checking a power cable connection could save a life. Stay as far away from other electrical wiring as possible. Never allow the camera housing, the cabling, a drill bit, or any other item to contact electrical wires or conduit. Injury or death could result. A qualified installer will need to securely mount the unit to a supporting structure capable of sustaining the weight of the unit (4.5 pounds) by using appropriate tools and hardware. Failure to properly secure the HDCam could result in the unit separating from the support structure and falling. This would not only damage the camera but could injure anyone standing nearby. If needed, WeatherBug may be able to recommend professional installers and an estimate of the cost. If this is desired, please call WeatherBug Weather Station Technical Support at (800) or support@aws.com. Release 1, Version June 2008

Site Evaluation All sites will have certain building restrictions. To get the most out of the camera, a location needs to be chosen that will present the least restrictions. The sky, sun, and clouds are important elements in the captured images. A perfect picture, in this case, includes about 50% sky and about 50% earth. Remember that the camera will be operating throughout the year. A good view in the late fall or winter may be obstructed by tree growth in the spring and summer. Spend time looking at the lighting and shading based on the time of day, types of weather, and time of year. It is best to center the camera facing toward the prevailing winds generally Westerly in the United States. If you invest the time now in site evaluation, your efforts are sure to pay off in the end. The camera must also be securely mounted to avoid distortion of the camera images. The mounting arm must be wall mounted for optimal stabilization. The camera should be mounted high enough so that there is a clear view of the horizon. The unit should be mounted so that it is easily accessible. This will aid in any maintenance or adjustments that may have to be made. Once you have chosen the direction you want the camera to face, it should be mounted on the outermost wall in that direction. This will keep any roofs and unnecessary structures out of your camera view. Select and verify a route to run the cables from the camera to the interior of the building. Figure 1 - Wall Mounted HDCam Note: Any cable routed on the building structure exterior must be secured and routed in a conduit. Keep in mind that the unit comes with 200 feet of cable that must reach from the camera to the network connection. Extensions for the cable may be obtained from WeatherBug by calling (800) or ing support@aws.com. Release 1, Version June 2008
Installation Indoor Preliminary Setup *****SETTING THE HDCAM UP INDOORS ON THE NETWORK IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE SUCCESSFUL OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF YOUR CAMERA. ***** By following these preliminary steps you will have the ability to obtain the internal IP address of the HDCam, which you need in order to view the live video transmitted from the HDCam. It is imperative that you install the camera indoors initially in order to guarantee that the camera is working as it should. 22 Routing the Cable It is best to work with a team of at least two people, as cable will have to be handled from both the inside and the outside of the building. Keep in mind the standard HDCam package contains 200 feet of cable. This cable must reach from a network connection to the camera. Note: The 200 ft Cat 6 Power over Ethernet cable provided as part of the HDCam Package is not specific to this camera. Any Cat 5 or Cat 6 Ethernet cable can be interchanged with the cable provided. Also, the HDCam Ethernet Cable is not UV rated. Therefore, the cable must be routed in conduit when running outdoors to protect the cables. The cable should be run inside as much as possible. Cable can be run in ceiling spaces. In order for optimal camera operation, the maximum possible cable length is 328 ft (100 m). 1. With one end of the cable as close as possible to the network connection that will be used and allowing about eight extra feet, tape the end of the cable to something sturdy in the area to hold it in place, keeping in mind that the cable cannot run directly across the floor and will have to be attached to areas such as the base of walls when the job is complete. 2. Run the cable to the general area that the camera will be mounted outside; fish tape may be used here to make this step easier. 3. Tape the cable down as close to where the camera will be mounted as possible. 4. At the outside location where the camera is to be mounted, as close to the camera as you can get, install conduit to cover any outside portion of the cable. Make sure the cable will reach to where the camera will be mounted. Release 1, Version June 2008
Outdoor Installation For the following steps you will need to unpack the items listed below: HDCam in Housing Mounting Arm Cable Ties 1. Starting from the camera mounting location, attach the mounting arm to the wall and secure tightly (hardware not included). In addition, make sure the mounting arm is mounted high enough so that the camera is not at more than a 45 degree angle. The direction of the arm should allow the camera to be focused and cleaned with minimal effort. 2. Attach the camera housing to the pivoting bracket using the supplied hardware and a 7/16 wrench. 3. Attach the pivoting camera housing bracket to the mount arm using a 9/16 wrench. 4. Open the camera housing by turning the latch in a counterclockwise direction until you can no longer turn it. Lightly push down on the top of the enclosure while pulling back on the latch. Be careful when you let go of the latch, the top is spring loaded and may fly open if you do not hold onto it. 5. After feeding the outdoor end of the 200 ft Ethernet cable through the bottom opening of the camera housing, connect the cable into the camera where the connection is labeled NET (PoE). Leaving some slack in the cable inside of the housing, turn the outside ring on the bottom opening of the camera housing to secure the cable. 6. Securely fasten the wire harness with the supplied cable ties to the mount arm leaving a slight loop to both reduce tension on the connection as well as allow excess water to do drip off of the cable. Figure 17 - HDCam with Drip Loop 7. Continue to fasten the cable to the arm and down the mounting structure until reaching the location where the cable will enter the building/conduit. 8. Cut off the remaining ends of the cable ties. 9. The HDCam needs to be grounded according to local electrical code. 10. Close the camera housing. Release 1, Version June 2008
Indoor connections For the following steps you will need to unpack the items listed below: Network Surge Suppressor Power Strip Power Supply 5 ft Cat 5 Network Ethernet Cable 1. Plug the network surge suppressor into the power supply in the second connection labeled Data in. 3. Plug the 5 ft Cat 5 Network Ethernet cable into the network surge suppressor. 4. For internet transmission, plug the opposite end of the 5 ft Cat 5 Network Ethernet Cable into the network connection at the location inside of the building. 5. For power, plug the power supply into the power strip and plug the power strip into an electrical outlet. Make sure you plug the power supply into the power strip as this step was not completed during indoor preliminary setup. 6. Once the camera has a power connection and internet transmission, several lights can be seen on the camera, which you should have witnessed while completing the Indoor Preliminary Setup section of this manual on page 12. Refer back to this section for images depicting the necessary light activity on the camera. Release 1, Version June 2008
Focusing the Camera Two people are needed to complete this portion of the install. One person will need to work with the installed camera to make the necessary focus adjustments while another person assists with focusing by looking at the images through the WeatherBug HDCam Viewer Page ( your camera ip address ) on a computer on the same network. Open the camera housing. Inside there are two adjustments on the camera. The adjustment located closest to the front of the lens is the Lens Focus Adjustment. The adjustment located closest to the camera is the Lens Zoom Adjustment. 1. Unscrew both lens adjustment knobs. 2. Facing the back of the camera, turn both lens dials counterclockwise until they stop. 3. Then move the Lens Zoom clockwise until the person watching the image says it is zoomed in or zoomed out as much as desired on the center of the view you wish to capture. 4. In order to make the image clear, move the Lens Focus Adjustment clockwise until the desired clarity is reached. This adjustment is very sensitive. To fine focus the camera, only the smallest adjustment is needed. 5. Tighten both lens adjustment knobs in order to lock in your desired settings. 6. Once the camera is focused, if the image is blurry on one side try rotating the actual lens until the image is crisp from one side to the other. Figure 18 HDCam Lens Focus Adjustment and Lens Zoom Adjustment Release 1, Version June 2008

Troubleshooting In cases of malfunction, the most common cause is lack of power to the HDCam. Be sure to check power supplies and connections to ensure that the HDCam has the proper power supply and that the components are turned on. You should see a light illuminated on the power supply as depicted in Figure 22. Figure 22 HDCam Power Supply Showing Illuminated Indicator Light If a power problem is suspected, unplug and re-plug the HDCam power supply. You can verify if you have power by looking for the light discussed in Installation, on page 14, through the window of the front of the housing at the top right corner of the camera. If this light is lit you should have power. Figure 23 HDCam Indicator Light Showing Power Connection Established Release 1, Version June 2008
You can also check the light on the back of the camera, below the NET (PoE) connection. You will have to open the camera housing to do this. If the green light is illuminated, you should have an internet connection. If you are unable to see the green light illuminated, go to a computer that you can guarantee is connected to the same network as the camera. Verify that you are not having internet or network problems by visiting a website like Figure 24 HDCam Link Light Indicating Internet Connection Established If you are able to view live video through the WeatherBug Viewer Page, but you are unable to retrieve captured images through you need to verify that TCP port 21 (FTP) outbound is open. In the event that you have gone through the provided troubleshooting steps and your camera is still inoperable, contact WeatherBug Weather Station Technical Support at (800) or support@aws.com. Release 1, Version June 2008
Maintenance There is little maintenance needed for the HDCam. As long as the camera housing remains tightly closed, there should rarely be a need to clean anything inside the camera housing. Some sort of blower ( canned air) can be used to remove dust from the camera lens as needed. The window at the front of the housing, where the lens is positioned, may be very loosely wiped with a dry, soft cloth to remove dust and debris. The window can then be wiped with the cloth using a very small amount of water. DO NOT use volatile solvents such as alcohol, benzene, thinners, or ammonia as they may damage the surface finishes. DO NOT use abrasive cleaners, cloths, or sponges. Please keep in mind that most household cleaners (such as Windex, etc.) contain ammonia. Release 1, Version June 2008
