2. Equipment List Remote Display Wireless Decoder & Antenna Installation Manual 12V DC 1.5Amp Power Supply 5 Metre Cable (RJ12 to RJ12 6 pin) 3. Overview Introduction The Remote Display Wireless Decoder is used to display SmartLink Alarm Calls on a SmartLite or BetaBrite Adaptive LED display sent via POCSAG pager messaging. Alarms can be paged to a specific Cap Code recognised by the Remote Display Wireless Decoder which will then display the call with appropriate colours and priority for Nurse Call applications. SmartLink Alarm Calls are generated using either SmartLink s monitoring software (SmartWatch XP) or the standalone SmartPage system connected to any of the following SmartLink Devices: SmartWire Nurse Call SmartLine Wireless Medi-Call Diallers (via SCU Receiver or Modem) Location Selection & Cabling *** Important *** Choosing a suitable location for your Remote Display Wireless Decoder will ensure optimal reception of the alarm call messages. The RF receiver on the Remote Display Wireless Decoder has a sensitivity of -120dBm. To ensure signal integrity, it is recommended that the signal strength be measured at the proposed site before installation. When running RS232 data cables from the Remote Display to the LED Displays make sure that the total cable run does not exceed 20m. For example, if you are running 4 LED Displays from a single Decoder, then each LED Display should have a data cable no more than 5m in length. If data cables need to be run further, we recommend using an RS232 to RS485 converter which will give distances of up to 1.2km. Decoding POCSAG Messages The Remote Display Wireless Decoder expects to receive alarm calls in the following format: [Text Description] Cancelled Priority #Zone A text description of the Client should be contained within square brackets, any keywords defining the alarm type and zone must be outside these brackets. If the keyword Cancelled exists either before or after the brackets, this identifies the page as being a restore. Priority keywords must be located after the brackets; there are five levels of priority: 1. Emergency 2. Call + Staff Assist 3. Call + Wet Area 4. Call 5. Nurse Present 2

A # followed by a numeric digit in the range 1 to 8 must be found and determines the alarm zone (or channel). This must come after the priority keyword. If this is not found the page is ignored. The combination of zone, priority (call type) and text description within the square brackets is used to identify which message is to be removed from the display queue. Examples: Activation: [Room 13 Bed 9] Emergency #4 Restore: [Room 13 Bed 9] Cancelled Emergency #4 Note: The maximum length of a paged message is 99 characters. Keywords are not case sensitive. Keywords can be edited using the menu, and have a maximum length of 13 characters. Other fixed keywords include: Message SmartLinkDisplayMasterReset SmartLinkDisplayFallbackMessage Meaning Used to remotely reset the Decoder unit and display. Used to change the fall back message. When SmartLinkDisplayFallbackMessage is received, any text following this becomes the fallback message that is displayed when the unit is idle. When SmartLinkDisplayMasterReset is received, the unit will clear all messages and return to the fallback message. This can also be done using a remote hardwired input. Displaying Messages on LED Display The information that will be sent to the LED display will be the Text Description followed by the Priority of the call. (Decoder MKII, Version 2.0) Text Description Priority (Latest Version Decoder MKII, Ver.2.0) Examples 1. Received Message by the Remote Decoder via POCSAG receiver: [Bed 1] Emergency #4 Message sent to LED display from Remote Decoder: Bed 1 Emergency Examples 2. Received Message by the Remote Decoder via POCSAG receiver: [Room 2] CALL Staff Assist #5 Message sent to LED display from Remote Decoder: Room 2 CALL Staff Assist Note that earlier versions of the Decoder MKII (Ver.1.3) included the zone number. 3

Menu Operation The Remote Display Wireless Decoder can be setup using the four Menu buttons found on the PCB (Up, Down, Next, OK). Set the maximum life of a message from 10min to 990min 18. Invert the radio receiver data (not required unless using a custom Receiver) 19. Enter debug mode, this will display any paged messages exactly. Defaulting all values To default all values in the Wireless Decoder, simply press next, the display will show Press ok to default all values or next to cancel. Pressing OK will reset all setting to default, and pressing next will proceed to the next menu item. 4

Editing cap codes To edit a cap code press next until the desired cap code (RIC1-RIC4) is displayed. Press up or down. The cap code will be displayed with a selected digit in red. Press next to select which digit to change, and up/down to increment or decrement the digit. When the cap code is correct press ok to return to the menu, and ok again to return to normal operation. The maximum value of a cap code is Note that the cap code of (use to clear watchdog only) will always be decoded, and does not need to be one of the four programmable cap codes. Setting display cycle time, and other simple options To set the display cycle time, press next until Cycle 5sec is displayed. Pressing up or down changes the display cycle time, pressing next proceeds to the next menu option, or pressing ok, returns to normal operation. This same procedure can be used to change all other options on the menu apart from keywords, cap codes debug mode, and defaulting values. Editing priority keywords Editing keywords is similar to editing cap codes. Press next until the desired keyword is displayed, then press up or down. The keyword will appear with one character in red. Pressing next selects the digit to edit, and up/down changes the character. When done press ok to return to the main menu and ok again to return to normal operation. Note that keywords are not case sensitive, therefore lower case characters are not required. The. Character replaces a space, and any leading or trailing spaces are truncated from the keyword. For example.hello.test.. would equal hello test. Debug mode If a Wireless Decoder is failing to respond, and you wish to see the exact message being paged to it, you can do this using debug mode. Press next until you see the message Press ok to enter debug mode, then press ok. When a paged message is received, the exact message will scroll across the display in red, so that you can check that the format and keywords are correct. Debug mode will time out in 5min if no pages are received. To exit debug mode manually, just press ok. Cap Codes The Remote Display Wireless Decoder uses four default pre-defined cap codes as follows: Cap Code Function Reserved for the Decoder unit s Watchdog feature. Do NOT use for standard paging Displays SmartLink Alarm Call messages Displays SmartLink Alarm Call messages Displays SmartLink Alarm Call messages 5

4. Configuring the Monitoring Software Creating a Contact for the Remote Display The Remote Display Wireless Decoder can be added as a Recipient to SmartWatch XP just like any other POCSAG receiver such as a pager. The first step is to add a POCSAG Port and Configure the POCSAG Gateway with the appropriate settings for your chosen paging transmitter. (For more information on setting up, please refer to the SmartWatch XP Installation Manual.) The next step is to create contacts for your Remote Displays in SmartWatch XP. In the following example, a Remote Display has been added as a contact using Address

Clients Settings Alarm calls generated by a SmartLink Client can be sent directly to a Remote Display Wireless Decoder or as part of a Group, Roster or Call Escalation (repeat paging). The following example will send an alarm call messages to the Remote Display Wireless Decoder defined by the Contact details. NOTE: Alarm Call Messages displayed on the Remote Display Wireless Decoder are defined by the descriptions for Zones 5, 6 and 7 where Zone 5 is used for both Patient Call and Emergency messages. For more information on software installation please refer to the SmartWatch XP Installation Manual. 8

5. Operation Display Cycle & Call Priority The display cycle time can be adjusted in the menu from 5 to 60 seconds. Each display period, the display will update to the next message with the highest priority, and sound a cadence. If a message is received which is of a higher priority than the one currently being displayed, the display will update immediately, instead of waiting for the next display cycle. If an incoming call is of lower priority than the call being displayed it will not be shown until all calls with a higher priority are cancelled or the Decoder unit is reset. Note that only the messages of the highest priority are displayed. For example, if there are 2 Staff Assists, and 1 Wet Area, the Wet Area will not be displayed until both the Staff Assists are restored. When all events have been restored, the display will return to an idle message. If a message is never restored, due to an error with the paging system, then it will be removed after its maximum life expires. The maximum life of a message can be set in the menu between 10min and 990min (16.5 hours) the default value is 120min. The maximum number of messages that can be stored in the Wireless Decoder is 18. If this is exceeded, then the oldest message will be overwritten by the new message. Colours and Cadences (Audible Tones) When a message is displayed the Remote Display Wireless Decoder will select a colour and a cadence for the message determined by its type. The colour of the message and the type of cadence for each priority can also be changed using the menu system. The default cadences and colours shown below. Alarm Type Colour Cadence (Audible Tone) Emergency Red Rapid repeating (1 beep / second) Call (Staff Assist) Amber Moderate repeating (2 beeps / 5 seconds) Call (Wet Area) Amber Moderate repeating (2 beeps / 5 seconds) Call Amber Slow repeating (1 beep / 10 seconds) Nurse Presence Green No beep Watchdog The Wireless Decoder has a selectable watchdog time of 10 min min or disabled (default). The watchdog timer is reset on every valid message received. If no messages are received for the selected time, the display will show a fault message System Down. The relays can also be selected to operate under this condition. If a page is received on a cap code of it will clear the watchdog only, and will not display any text is a fixed setting in the Wireless Decoder and it does need to be one of the four programmable cap codes. The paged message to does not need to specific format, but should contain some text. Once a watchdog timeout occurs, it can be cleared in the following ways: Reset the unit by re-applying power. Send the unit a valid page. Press the ok button on the unit. Press the hardwired external clear button. 9

Relay Outputs There are two relays on the Wireless Decoder and each relay can be triggered by one of the following: Emergency For an emergency message the relay will pulse or activate for the duration of the message. Watchdog If the unit s watchdog fails, the relay will pulse or activate for the duration of the condition. Cadence The relay will activate in sync with any sounds made by the Wireless Decoder, the pulse/steady option has no effect on this relay function. The relay contacts are rated at 1A, which is suitable for any piezo alarm or remote hardwired inputs on other equipment. Remote Hard Wired Clear Input Shorting the connection labelled Clear to ground on the terminal block will erase all messages in the Wireless Decoder. Led indicator The bi-colour LED on the front of the Wireless Decoder provides the following indications: Colour Flashing Green Steady Green Steady Amber Flashing Red Indicator Meaning Power on, ready to receive page Decoding data, good signal strength Decoding data, weak signal strength Error in decoded data (will remain until next page) Speaker outputs There are two power amplifiers on the Wireless Decoder capable of driving 2.5W each. Each output has a volume control, located just above the terminal block. These amplifiers can each drive a 4 ohm load, or they can both be bridged into one 8 ohm speaker by connecting it across the two + terminals. 10

Master Reset Resetting the unit will erase all stored calls. This can be done with a momentary press of the RESET button (which is located on the right side of the unit). After a reset the unit takes approximately 3 seconds to clear the flash memory, at the end of this time the unit will beep indicating it is ready to receive a call. Resetting can also be done, by sending a page with the keyword SmartLinkDisplayMasterReset. There are two things to consider when resetting the unit. If the unit is reset during a page reception, then that page may be missed. Secondly, the page in which messages are stored in the flash memory device is rotated to even-out the wear on the flash memory. Resetting the unit also resets this rotation to the start of the chip, therefore resetting after each call would reduce the life of the flash memory device. Note that resetting the Decoder unit will return the Fallback message to its default option. 11

Fallback Message The Fallback Message is displayed when no alarms are active. The default Fallback Message is ***** and can be changed by sending the message SmartLinkDisplayFallbackMessage followed by the new text. For example, the following message would set the Fallback message to Have a nice day. Power Requirements The Wireless Decoder requires a DC supply of 9-15V. With both the speaker outputs under full load the peak current consumption is 750mA. In this situation a regulated 12V supply capable of 1A is recommended. If only one speaker connection is used, the Wireless Decoder can be powered from a 500mA 9V plug pack. Beta-Brite connections There are four RJ12 connectors on the Wireless Decoder for connection to four Beta-Brite displays. A cable has been provided for a single display. If a longer cable is necessary please refer to pin-outs below: Looking at the RJ12 plug with the tab lock at the bottom, the connections from right to left are: 1. Ground 2. Un-used 3. Data 4. Un-used 5. Un-used 6. Un-used RJ12 6 pin plug (front view)
