Issue 3 08/99 Updated technical specifications Trademark Information ADC and ADC Telecommunications are registered trademarks of ADC Telecommunications, Inc. Admonishments Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments in the form of Dangers, Warnings, and Cautions must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence. Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided. General Safety Precaution Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. 1 GENERAL This user manual describes the features, functions, and installation procedures for the ADC RF Splitter/Combiner and Directional Coupler. The terms universal panel and chassis are used throughout this manual. The universal panel accommodates 2! 1, 4! 1, and 8! 1 Splitter/Combiner and Directional Coupler modules. The chassis is a stand-alone unit that accommodates a 16 x 1 splitter/combiner. Page 2

3 The universal panel accommodates 2! 1, 4! 1, 8 x 1, or directional coupler modules, and can be any desired combination. The universal panel does not accommodate the 16 x 1 splitter/combiner. All panels and the 16 x 1 Splitter/Combiner chassis mount in 19-inch equipment racks or in 23-inch equipment racks with extender brackets (ordered separately). 2 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION This section provides functional, physical, and technical descriptions of the RF Splitters/Combiners. A typical network employing the RF broadband ( ) splitter/combiner is shown in Figure 1. The unit provides excellent return loss, signal isolation, and insertion loss. The splitter/combiner is capable of splitting RF signals or combining RF signals. The splitting function takes one signal input and divides it two, four, or eight ways. The combining function performs the opposite task by combining two, four, or eight signals into one output. The circuit schematic of the various splitter/combiners is shown in Figure 3. S S S S IN OUT TAP 8,12 OR 20 db PORT PORT PORT PORT DIRECTIONAL COUPLER 6587-A Figure 3. Splitter/Combiner and Directional Coupler Schematic The directional coupler is a three terminal device consisting of an input, output, and tap. The coupler is designed to provide a specific signal level (8, 12, or 20 db) at the tap with respect to the input signal level. Page 4

5 2.2 Physical Description Each panel and chassis is 1.75 inches (4.5 cm) high and mounts in either a 19- or 23-inch (48.3 or 58.4 cm) equipment rack. A cable tie bar is located at the rear of the chassis. There are 75 ohm F- or BNC-type connectors mounted on the rear of the modules or chassis that provide the interface for coaxial connections to network elements (NE). The splitter/combiner and directional coupler modules are designed for use in the universal panel. The universal panel can support a mixed compliment of splitter/combiners and directional couplers. The directional coupler occupies the same space as the 2! 1 splitter/combiner. Table 1 shows some of the possible universal panel equipment arrangements. Table 1. Universal Panel Mounting Space Required Per Module Cable The type of equipment cable used is dependent upon service or bandwidth of the associated equipment. All cables should be 75 ohm coaxial with tinned copper shield. Two recommended coaxial cable types are 9100 and HEC-2 or their equivalents. The recommended maximum length of cable between network elements is shown in Table 2. Cables are available with connectors pre-terminated on one end, with the other end field-connected using the appropriate connector for the network element interface. This method provides exact lengths and minimizes cable storage congestion. If the use of pre-terminated cables is not desired, connector kits with installation procedures for field termination are available from ADC Telecommunications. Page 5

14 3 INSTALLATION Warning: Never install equipment in a wet location or during a lightning storm. The Splitter/Combiner panel and chassis mount in a 19- or 23-inch (48.3 or 58.4 cm) equipment rack. Mounting screws are shipped with the panel. Extender brackets for mounting in a 23-inch equipment rack may be ordered separately. 3.1 Mount Panel or Chassis Mount the Splitter/Combiner panel or chassis as follows: 1. Determine rack location, mounting space width, and position. 2. If mounting in a 23-inch equipment rack, attach extender brackets to the panel or chassis accordingly. 3. Position the panel or chassis in its assigned rack location and secure with four mounting screws (provided), two on each side. 15 3.2 Cabling The cable type used for the Splitter/Combiner depends upon the application, type of service, and equipment. All cables should be 75 ohm coaxial with tinned copper shield. The recommended maximum lengths are from Network Element to Network Element. Cable the Splitter/Combiner panel or chassis as follows: 1. Obtain Network Element circuit to Splitter/Combiner jack IN and OUT assignments from local support staff. 2. Label all IN and OUT cables to identify the Network Element associated with each Splitter/Combiner connector. It is recommended that all cables associated with a Splitter/ Combiner module be grouped or laced together for ease of future removal of the module. 3. Route the cables from the Network Element to the rear of the Splitter/Combiner panel or chassis according to the office cabling plan. It is recommended that the cabling be split between the left and right sides of the equipment rack. (See Figure 7.) 4. Measure the length of cable from the cable management bar to the designated Splitter/ Combiner connector, allowing slack for tension relief. Cut, strip, and terminate each coaxial cable with the appropriate F- or BNC-type coaxial connector. Instructions for terminating coaxial connectors are included with the connectors. 5. Consult assignment lists. Terminate each coaxial cable to the appropriate Splitter/Combiner connector. 6. Record the Network Element Splitter/Combiner jack connector per local procedure.
