1 SECTION COMMUNICATIONS HORIZONTAL CABLING PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS AND SECTIONS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. B. Related Sections: 1.2 SUMMARY 1. Division 27 Section Common Work Results for Communications for project scope of work, contractor qualifications, definitions, substitutions, warranty, etc. 2. Division 27 Sections Communications Equipment Room Fittings and "Communications Backbone Cabling" for voice and data cabling associated with system panels and devices. 3. Cable Connecting Hardware and Patch Panels. 4. Communications Outlet/Connectors. 5. Cabling System Identification Products. 6. Cable Management System. 7. Testing. 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. See requirements under Division 27 Section Common Work Results for Communications. 1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. General Performance: Horizontal cabling system shall comply with transmission standards in TIA/EIA-568-C.1 and IEEE Std 802.3ae, when tested according to test procedures of this standard. This Contractor shall notify this Engineer, prior to cable installation, should the path distance the Contractor has chosen to install the cable exceeds the maximum distance allowed by BICSI. 2 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Surface-Burning Characteristics: As determined by testing identical products according to ASTM E 84 by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency. 1. Flame-Spread Index: 25 or less. 2. Smoke-Developed Index: 50 or less. B. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application. C. Communications Pathways and Spaces: Comply with TIA/EIA-569-B. D. Grounding: Comply with ANSI-J-STD-607-A. 1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Test cables upon receipt at Project site. Test each pair of UTP cable for open and short circuits. 1.7 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Environmental Limitations: Do not have delivered or install cables and connecting materials until wet work in spaces is complete and dry, and temporary HVAC system is operating and maintaining ambient temperature and humidity conditions at occupancy levels during the remainder of the construction period. 1.8 COORDINATION A. Coordinate layout and installation of communications pathways and cabling with Owner's communications and LAN equipment and service suppliers. B. Coordinate communications outlet/connector locations with location of power receptacles at each work area. C. Coordinate work with other trades. 1.9 CLOSE-OUT DOCUMENTS A. Refer to Division 27 Section Common Work Results for Communication for close-out document requirements, including, but not limited to the following: 1. Operation and Maintenance manuals; 2. List of Contractors and Parts and Equipment Suppliers complete with contact person, proper company name, address, and telephone numbers; 3. All Contractor and Manufacturer warranties; 4. 3 PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 PATHWAYS A. General Requirements: Comply with TIA/EIA-569-B. B. Cable Support: NRTL labeled for support of Category 6 cabling, designed to prevent degradation of cable performance and pinch points that could damage cable. 1. Support brackets with cable tie slots for fastening cable ties to brackets. 2. Lacing bars, spools, J-hooks, and D-rings. 3. Straps and other devices. 4. Cable ties shall be Velcro. C. Conduit and Boxes: Comply with requirements in Division 26 Section "Raceway and Boxes for Electrical Systems." Flexible metal conduit shall not be used. Outlet boxes shall be no smaller than 2-1/4"(W) x 3-3/4"(L) x 3-1/4"(D). D. For firestopping, provide fittings that have been UL tested for through-penetration firestops. Fittings shall be passive and designed for use on both sides of a wall/floor. Provide in galvanized finish and in sizes required through firewalls. Acceptable Manufacturer: Wiremold FlameStopper. 2.2 UTP CABLE A. Description: 100-ohm, 4-pair UTP, formed into 25-pair, binder groups with a FEP insulation and a FR, low smoke PVC Jacket. 1. Comply with ICEA S for mechanical properties. 2. Comply with TIA/EIA-568-C.1 for performance specifications. 3. Comply with TIA/EIA-568-C.2, Category Listed and labeled by an NRTL acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction as complying with UL 444 and NFPA 70 for the following type: a. Communications, Plenum Rated: Type CMP, complying with NFPA For communication outlets with two RJ-45s, provide one cable for data (gray) and one cable for voice (blue). For communication outlets with three RJ-45s, provide two cables for data (gray and yellow) and one cable for voice (blue). 6. Upon entering the MDF, the cables shall be formed into a 10' slack coil and secured in "D" rings on the plywood wall. 7. Acceptable Manufacturers: a. Berk-Tek: LANmark-1000 Category 6, # (Gray), # (Blue), and # (Yellow). Matrix Proj. No Communications Horizontal Cabling
4 b. General Cable:.GenSPEED 6000 Category 6, # (Gray), # (Blue), and # (Yellow). 8. It was determined that the cable lengths would comply with Standards on paper. However, due to Contractor discretion in actual routing (shall be run perpendicular and parallel to building lines) and coordination with other trades, Contractor shall verify that the furthest outlet s cable length does not exceed the length, as stipulated in the Standards. If the cable length exceeds the distance, this Contractor shall work with the Engineer to establish an IDF in order to comply with Standards, at no additional cost to the Owner including backboard, four-strand 50 um laser optimized fiber optic cable between closets, fiber and copper patch panels, cross connects, and testing. If this situation occurs, Contractor shall submit shop drawings for this scope. 2.3 UTP PATCH PANELS AND CORDS A. General Requirements for Cable Connecting Hardware: Comply with TIA/EIA-568-C.2, IDC type, with modules designed for punch-down caps or tools. Cables shall be terminated with connecting hardware of same category or higher for a performance warrantied system. B. Connecting Blocks: 110-style IDC for Category 6. Provide blocks for the number of cables terminated on the block, plus 25 percent spare. Integral with connector bodies, including plugs and jacks where indicated. 1. Number of Terminals per Field: One for each conductor in assigned cables. C. Patch Panels (T568A): Modular panels housing multiple-numbered jack units with IDCtype connectors at each jack for permanent termination of pair groups of installed cables. 1. Number of Jacks per Field: One for each four-pair UTP cable indicated. 2. Provide Category 6 UTP patch panels (rack mount) per TIA 568-C.2 as verified by ETL. Panels shall have 110 IDC type to eight position eight conductor connectors with no exposed PC boards. Jacks shall be manufactured with printed circuit board (PCB) and have T568A pin/pair assignment (unless otherwise noted on the drawings). Patch panels shall be provided with individual port and patch panel labeling identification areas and shall be labeled consistent with the data jack system labeling outlined in this specification. 3. Provide quantity to accommodate number of outlets indicated on drawings. 4. Provide rear cable management (including stress relief bars) and horizontal cable management guide either as an integral part of the patch panel or as a separate piece and station support bars. Each 48 port patch panel is to have a dedicated horizontal cable guide located adjacent to the patch panel in the rack or as indicated on drawings. 5. The building and room number in which the patch panel resides shall be prominently displayed. 6. Patch panels and each port of each patch panel shall be labeled per the Owner s specifications. 5 7. Allow 50% of the rack space for Owner provided switches, servers, transceivers, shelves, and UPS. 8. Acceptable Manufacturers: a. Leviton: extreme 6+ #69586-U48. b. Ortronics: Clarity6 #OR-PHD66U48. D. Provide dedicated patch panels in which to terminate the GRAY CAT 6 data cables mount GRAY patch panel(s) below any fiber optic cable cabinet (located at the top of the rack allow space if none exists). Provide dedicated patch panels in which to terminate the YELLOW CAT 6 data cables mount below the GRAY patch panel(s). Provide dedicated patch panels in which to terminate the BLUE CAT 6 data cables mount below the YELLOW patch panel(s). However, when only two, CAT 6 cables are being installed, BLUE cables and jacks shall replace the YELLOW cables and jacks - the YELLOW cables and jacks shall be eliminated. 1. In the 3 port design, cables shall terminate in RJ-45 jacks mounted on three-port face plates. The GRAY and YELLOW cables shall connect to the top and middle port for data and the BLUE cable on the bottom port for voice. For the two-port applications, GRAY shall be on top and BLUE in the middle with a blank cap at the bottom. 2. RJ-45 jacks shall match the cables in color. E. Patch/Line Cords: Factory-made, four-pair cables in lengths listed below; terminated with eight position modular plug at each end. Shall incorporate cross-over lead concept and built-in exclusion features. Provide one patch cord for each end of each link (i.e., two per link), as shown on the drawings, plus 30% spares. Confirm final color with Engineer/Owner prior to ordering. 1. Provide cords in the following lengths (confirm length and Owner preferred colors prior to ordering): a. Line Cords: 50% - 10 feet and 50% - 15 feet. b. Patch Cords: 50% - 3 feet and 50% - 7 feet. c. Provide 30% spare cords (Qty/Lengths: ½ at 3 feet and ½ at 7 feet). 2. Acceptable Manufacturers a. Leviton extreme 6+ SlimLine Patch Cord Series. b. Legrand Ortronics: Clarity6 Modular Patch Cord Series. 3. Contractor shall sequentially label (with flexible cable labels or order sequentially pre-printed from the factory) each patch cord with the same number on both ends (1, 1; 2, 2; 3, 3; etc.). Contractor shall place a tag on the frame to indicate the last number used on the patch cords. Matrix Proj. No Communications Horizontal Cabling
6 2.4 COMMUNICATIONS OUTLET/CONNECTORS (T568A) A. RJ45 jacks shall match the cables in color and be made of high impact, flame retardant UL-rated 94V-0 thermoplastic. The jacks shall be designed with integral locking mechanism which, upon insertion into the face plate port, shall provide maximum pullout strength at the interface. B. RJ45 jacks shall be recessed mount, 100-ohm, balanced, twisted-pair connector; four-pair, eight-position modular, flat. Comply with TIA-568-C.0, TIA-568-C.1, TIA-568-C.2, and TIA-606-B specifications. The jacks shall individually snap-in to faceplate. Legend shall be machine printed (no less than 12 point type), in the field, using adhesive-tape label or snap-in, clear-label covers and machine-printed paper inserts. Termination of all jacks shall be 110-type insulation displacement connectors (IDC), T568A pin/pair assignment and shall utilize printed circuit board technology. C. Acceptable Manufacturers: 1. Leviton: extreme 6+ (#61110-RW6) with QuickPort Multimedia Outlet System Faceplate SMW or #41290=DMW White with flat mounting connector inserts # QW and blanks, as necessary. 2. Ortronics: Clarity 6 (white) with Series II Faceplate #OR or #OR Fog White with flat mounting module #OR and blanks, as necessary. 2.5 IDENTIFICATION PRODUCTS A. Labeling shall comply with Owner s specifications. B. Horizontal cables shall be labeled at each end of the cable. Additional labeling may be required at the intermediate locations such as conduits ends. C. Labeling shall start at the closest room to the Telecommunications Room and continue, in a logical manner clockwise, until each location is designated. D. Work station outlets in each room shall be numbered sequentially in a clockwise fashion beginning with the first outlet to the left of the primary entrance door. The RJ-45 jacks on the outlet faceplates shall be aligned vertically. The jacks shall be designated A, B, and C from top to bottom, which shall correspond to the Patch Panels designated GRAY, YELLOW and (BLUE as used) in the Telecommunications Room. BLUE Patch Panel shall not be required in two cable and two port applications. E. The work station outlets shall be numbered in clockwise order 1, 2, 3 etc. As an example, Room 100 is equipped with three work station outlets. The top of the first outlet faceplate shall reflect "RM 100" and the three jacks shall be labeled A1, B1 and C1. The second outlet shall be "RM 100," labeled A2, B2 and C2. The third, "RM 100", A3, B3 and C3. F. Patch Panels in the Telecommunications Room shall be labeled A, B, and (C as used) to correspond to the three ports on the outlet faceplates. To follow through with the Room 100 example, the first three ports on Patch Panel A shall be labeled Room 100, 1, 2, and 3. Patch Panel B shall be labeled Room 100, 1, 2, and 3. And, Patch Panel C (as used) shall be labeled Room 100, 1, 2, and 3. If the next room number is 102 and it has five outlet boxes, the next five ports on each Patch Panel A, B, and (C as used) shall be labeled "RM 102," 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The Patch Panel ports shall be numbered as they appear in a particular room, not by the physical port number. Matrix Proj. No Communications Horizontal Cabling
7 1. In the two cable/three port face plate applications, the top port shall remain A with the cable and jack GRAY for data. The middle port shall be B with the cable and jack BLUE for voice. The bottom port shall be left blank for future use. The corresponding Patch Panels in the TR shall be designated A with GRAY cables and jacks and B with BLUE cables and jacks. G. Comply with TIA/EIA-606-B and UL 969 for labeling materials, including label stocks, laminating adhesives, and inks used by label printers. H. Comply with requirements in Division 26 Section "Identification for Electrical Systems." I. Each box shall have a recessed designation strip with clear plastic cover for jack identification. Lettering shall be typed not handwritten. The associated termination shall be permanently labeled. 2.6 VOICE CABLE A. From the existing service provider s demarc, extend a 25 pair house cable from a 66 block mounted on the plywood wall to a 24 port, rack mounted patch panel. One pair shall be terminated on each port 1 through 23 and two pair on port 24. This configuration shall be used for FAX lines or any other requirement for analog service. 2.7 GROUNDING A. Comply with requirements in Division 26 Section "Grounding and Bonding for Electrical Systems" for grounding conductors and connectors. B. Comply with ANSI-J-STD-607-A. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 WIRING METHODS A. Wiring Method: Install cables in raceways and category compliant j-hooks. 1. Comply with requirements for raceways and boxes specified in Division 26 Section "Raceway and Boxes for Electrical Systems." B. Wiring within Enclosures: Bundle, lace, and train cables to terminal points with no excess and without exceeding manufacturer's limitations on bending radii. Provide and use lacing bars and distribution spools. 3.2 INSTALLATION OF PATHWAYS A. Comply with requirements for demarcation point, pathways, cabinets, and racks specified in Division 27 Section "Communications Equipment Room Fittings." Drawings indicate general arrangement of pathways and fittings. B. Comply with TIA/EIA-569-B for pull-box sizing and length of conduit and number of bends between pull points. C. Comply with requirements in Division 26 Section "Raceway and Boxes for Electrical Systems" for installation of conduits and wireways. Matrix Proj. No Communications Horizontal Cabling
8 3.3 INSTALLATION OF CABLES A. Comply with NECA 1. B. General Requirements for Cabling: 1. Comply with TIA/EIA-568-C Comply with BICSI ITSIM, Ch. 6, Cable Termination Practices. 3. Install 110-style IDC termination hardware unless otherwise indicated. 4. Terminate conductors; no cable shall contain un-terminated elements. Make terminations only at indicated outlets, terminals, cross-connects, and patch panels. 5. Cables may not be spliced. Secure and support cables at intervals not exceeding 48 inches and not more than 6 inches from cabinets, boxes, fittings, outlets, racks, frames, and terminals. 6. Install lacing bars to restrain cables, to prevent straining connections, and to prevent bending cables to smaller radii than minimums recommended by manufacturer. 7. Bundle, lace, and train conductors to terminal points without exceeding manufacturer's limitations on bending radii, but not less than radii specified in BICSI ITSIM, "Cabling Termination Practices" Chapter. Install lacing bars and distribution spools. 8. Do not install bruised, kinked, scored, deformed, or abraded cable. Do not splice cable between termination, tap, or junction points. Remove and discard cable if damaged during installation and replace it with new cable. 9. Cold-Weather Installation: Bring cable to room temperature before de-reeling. Heat lamps shall not be used for heating. 10. In the communications equipment room, install a 10-foot long service loop on each end of cable. 11. Pulling Cable: Comply with BICSI ITSIM, Ch. 4, "Pulling Cable." Monitor cable pull tensions. C. UTP Cable Installation: 1. Comply with TIA/EIA-568-C.2. 2 Do not untwist UTP cables more than 1/2 inch from the point of termination to maintain cable geometry. D. Open-Cable Installation: 1. Install cabling with horizontal and vertical cable guides in communications spaces with terminating hardware and interconnection equipment. 2. Suspend UTP cable (not in a wireway or pathway) a minimum of 8 inches above ceilings by cable supports not more than 48 inches apart. Matrix Proj. No Communications Horizontal Cabling
9 3. Cable shall not be run through structural members or in contact with pipes, ducts, or other potentially damaging items. E. Group connecting hardware for cables into separate logical fields. F. Separation from EMI Sources: 3.4 FIRESTOPPING 1. Comply with BICSI TDMM and TIA/EIA-569-A for separating unshielded copper voice and data communication cable from potential EMI sources, including electrical power lines and equipment. 2. Separation between open communications cables or cables in nonmetallic raceways and unshielded power conductors and electrical equipment shall be as follows: a. Electrical Equipment Rating Less Than 2 kva: A minimum of 5 inches. b. Electrical Equipment Rating between 2 and 5 kva: A minimum of 12 inches. c. Electrical Equipment Rating More Than 5 kva: A minimum of 24 inches. 3. Separation between communications cables in grounded metallic raceways and unshielded power lines or electrical equipment shall be as follows: a. Electrical Equipment Rating Less Than 2 kva: A minimum of 2-1/2 inches. b. Electrical Equipment Rating between 2 and 5 kva: A minimum of 6 inches. c. Electrical Equipment Rating More Than 5 kva: A minimum of 12 inches. 4. Separation between communications cables in grounded metallic raceways and power lines and electrical equipment located in grounded metallic conduits or enclosures shall be as follows: a. Electrical Equipment Rating Less Than 2 kva: No requirement. b. Electrical Equipment Rating between 2 and 5 kva: A minimum of 3 inches. c. Electrical Equipment Rating More Than 5 kva: A minimum of 6 inches. 5. Separation between Communications Cables and Electrical Motors and Transformers, 5 kva or HP and Larger: A minimum of 48 inches. 6. Separation between Communications Cables and Fluorescent Fixtures: A minimum of 12 inches. A. Comply with TIA/EIA-569-A, Annex A, "Firestopping." B. 10 3.5 GROUNDING A. Install grounding according to BICSI TDMM, "Grounding, Bonding, and Electrical Protection" Chapter. B. Comply with ANSI-J-STD-607-A. C. Locate grounding bus bar to minimize the length of bonding conductors. Fasten to wall allowing at least 2-inch clearance behind the grounding bus bar. Connect grounding bus bar with a minimum No. 4 AWG grounding electrode conductor from grounding bus bar to suitable electrical building ground. D. Bond metallic equipment to the grounding bus bar, using not smaller than No. 6 AWG equipment grounding conductor. 3.6 IDENTIFICATION A. Labeling shall comply with Owner s specifications. Identify system components, wiring, and cabling complying with TIA/EIA-606-B. Comply with requirements for identification specified in Division 26 Section "Identification for Electrical Systems." 1. Administration Class: Color-code cross-connect fields. Apply colors to voice and data service backboards, connections, covers, and labels. B. Provide factory-finished and labeled backboards. C. Paint and label colors for equipment identification shall comply with TIA/EIA-606-B for Class 3 level of administration, including optional identification requirements of this standard. D. Cable Schedule: Post in prominent location in each equipment room and wiring closet. List incoming and outgoing cables and their designations, origins, and destinations. Protect with rigid frame and clear plastic cover. Furnish an electronic copy of final comprehensive schedules for Project. Provide paper copies as determined by Owner. E. Cabling Administration Drawings: Show building floor plans with cabling administrationpoint labeling. Identify labeling convention and show labels for communications closets, backbone pathways and cables, entrance pathways, terminal hardware and positions, horizontal cables, work areas and workstation terminal positions, grounding buses and pathways, and equipment grounding conductors. Follow convention of TIA/EIA-606-B. Furnish electronic record of all drawings, in software and format selected by Owner. Provide paper copies as determined by Owner. F. Cable and Wire Identification: 1. Label each cable within 4 inches of each termination and tap, where it is accessible in a cabinet or junction or outlet box, and elsewhere as indicated. 2. Identification within Connector Fields in Equipment Rooms and Wiring Closets: Label each connector and each discrete unit of cable-terminating and connecting hardware. Matrix Proj. 11 G. Labels shall be preprinted or computer-printed type with printing area and font color that contrasts with cable jacket color but still complies with requirements in TIA/EIA-606-B. Cable labels shall utilize flexible vinyl or polyester that flex as cables are bent. 3.7 HORIZONTAL CABLE SYSTEM PERFORMANCE VERIFICATION A. Field Quality Control (UTP) 1. Perform tests and inspections. 2. Tests and Inspections: a. Visually inspect UTP jacket materials for NRTL certification markings. Inspect cabling terminations in communications equipment rooms for compliance with color-coding for pin assignments, and inspect cabling connections for compliance with TIA/EIA-568-C.1. b. Visually confirm Category 6, marking of outlets, cover plates, outlet/connectors, and patch panels. c. Visually inspect cable placement, cable termination, grounding and bonding, equipment and patch cords, and labeling of all components. d. Test UTP backbone copper cabling for DC loop resistance, shorts, opens, intermittent faults, and polarity between conductors. Test operation of shorting bars in connection blocks. Test cables after termination but not cross-connection. 1) Test instruments shall meet or exceed applicable requirements in TIA/EIA-568-C.2. Perform tests with a tester that complies with performance requirements in "Test Instruments (Normative)" Annex, complying with measurement accuracy specified in "Measurement Accuracy (Informative)" Annex. Use only test cords and adapters that are qualified by test equipment manufacturer for channel or link test configuration. e. UTP Performance Tests: 1) Test for each outlet. Perform the following tests according to TIA/EIA- 568-C.0, TIA/EIA-568-C.1, and TIA/EIA-568-C.2: a) Wire map. b) Length (physical vs. electrical, and length requirements). c) Insertion loss. d) Near-end crosstalk (NEXT) loss. e) Power sum near-end crosstalk (PSNEXT) loss. f) Equal-level far-end crosstalk (ELFEXT). g) Power sum equal-level far-end crosstalk (PSELFEXT). 12 h) Return loss. i) Propagation delay. j) Delay skew. f. Final Verification Tests: Perform verification tests for UTP systems after the complete communications cabling and workstation outlet/connectors are installed. 1) Voice Tests: These tests assume that dial tone service has been installed. Connect to the network interface device at the demarcation point. Go off-hook and listen and receive a dial tone. If a test number is available, make and receive a local, long distance, and digital subscription line telephone call. 2) Data Tests: These tests assume the Information Technology Staff has a network installed and is available to assist with testing. Connect to the network interface device at the demarcation point. Log onto the network to ensure proper connection to the network. 3. End-to-end cabling shall be considered defective if it does not pass tests and inspections. 4. Prepare test and inspection reports. B. Documentation 1. Contractor shall provide documentation to include test results and as-built drawings. Drawings shall be developed in CAD (i.e., AutoCAD 2009 or higher). a. Each MDF and IDF shall contain a copy of that building's as-built drawing affixed to an adjacent wall or located in an interior pouch for quick reference. Revised rack and equipment cabinet elevations shall be provided including serial numbers of all installed equipment. b. Provide three sets of black line, as-built drawing sets. c. Provide CD-ROM reflecting all the work with actual device and equipment locations. Drawings to be submitted in.dwg or.dxf format. 2. Document data for each measurement. Data for submittals shall be printed in a summary report that is formatted similar to Table 10.1 in BICSI TDMM, or transferred from the instrument to the computer, saved as text files, and printed and submitted. a. Provide the testing results database on CD-ROM for the completed job. The CD-ROM shall include the software tools required to view, inspect, and print any selection of test reports. b. Additionally, provide one hard copy of UTP cabling results. These results shall be submitted to the Engineer prior to the Contractor calling for substantial completion inspection. Matrix Proj. 13 c. Provide each communications room with its own notebook containing the corresponding test reports for the copper cabling. Each notebook shall have a clear front pocket and be labeled with that communications room s designation. 3. Upon completion of the work of this Section, thoroughly clean all exposed portions of the installation, removing all traces of soil, labels, grease, oil, or other foreign material, and using only the type cleaner recommended by the manufacturer of the item being cleaned. Cover all exposed cabling and termination devices. A. Provide a minimum of two site personnel with training on the network cabling system for up to two hours on site. Training shall cover the location labeling scheme, documentation structure and contents, documentation orientation, and system reconfiguration (i.e., reassignment of Communication Outlet function via patching). Training shall take place at time of Substantial Completion before building is occupied by Owner. 3.9 WARRANTY A.
