1 PRELIMINARY Applications RF and microwave antenna signal distribution EW Systems Broadband delay-line and signal processing systems Frequency distribution systems Radar system calibration Phased array antenna systems, interferometric antenna arrays Features/Benefits Integrated TX RF Amplifiers o Provides 0 db link gain without external RF amplifiers 100 MHz 18 GHz link RF bandwidth o Eliminates the performance and cost penalty of block up/down conversion Low RIN Source Laser, Laser and Modulator Bias Control Circuits and High Optical Input Power Photodiode o Provides high dynamic range of >102 db-hz 2/3 DWDM Option o Increases transport capacity without increasing fiber count Fully Integrated Unit o Reduces integration costs Emcore SITU2831 Externally Modulated RF Amplified Fiber Optic Transmitter and SIRU3000 Fiber Optic Receiver GHz, 1550nm Externally Modulated Self-Contained L K Band Transmitter and Fiber Optic Receiver The Emcore Small Integrated Transmitter Unit (SITU) and Small Integrated Receiver Unit (SIRU) are high performance externally modulated transmitter and receiver modules with an operating bandwidth of GHz. The SITU transmitter unit contains a low noise RF amplifier to provide overall link gain of 0 db for most applications. In addition, the units are DC-coupled, so they will pass RF frequencies below 100 MHz. Two optical output power ranges are available for each transmitter band. The SITU-SIRU series modules are fully integrated units that contain both the optics and the control electronics. Only DC input voltages, fiber optic and the RF signal are required for operation. The units can be used to construct transparent links for antenna remoting. The broad bandwidth is intended for applications such as electronic warfare and Ku band systems. Other applications include delay lines and signal processing systems. The system operates at a nominal wavelength of 1550 nm. Wavelength selected transmitter lasers on the ITU grid are also available to support multi-channel DWDM applications. Performance Highlights Min Typical Max Units Frequency Range GHz RF input power dbm dbm Wavelength 1550 nm Optical Output Power dbm Temperature Range C See following pages for complete specifications and conditions.
2 DATA SHEET OCTOBER 2011 Absolute Maximum Ratings Stresses in excess of the absolute maximum ratings can cause permanent damage to the device. These are absolute stress ratings only. Functional operation of the device is not implied at these or any other conditions in excess of those given in the operational sections of the data sheet. Exposure to absolute maximum ratings for extended periods can adversely affect device reliability. For normal operation, this lead should be left disconnected, as the SITU unit has an internal pull-up resistor to provide the 5V or logic high state. To disable the transmitter, this lead should be grounded to provide the 0V or low logic state. Under no condition, should any voltage in excess of +5V be applied to pin 9, as this will damage the internal laser power control. If this pin is not needed, insulate the bare conductor on the end of the supplied power harness to avoid accidental contact with voltages in excess of +5V. Page 4 of 8
