1 ROGERS TV AVAILABLE CO-OP POSITIONS FOR 2011/2012 Enthusiastic and Dedicated Students Wanted! Looking to obtain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, high-tech environment? Then Rogers TV, Durham Region is looking for YOU! Co-op with Rogers TV, Durham Region is perfect for students interested in a career in media arts, communications, journalism, television, and video production. We are committed to quality, relevant, local programming, and have won awards in Regional and National Competitions. Volunteering looks great on a resume and for many, leads to employment opportunities. Rogers TV, Durham Region is a launching pad for tomorrow s producers, directors and on-air personalities. There are numerous television, radio and film professionals who got their start at 301 Marwood Drive in Oshawa. We are looking for keen, knowledgeable, reliable students to do co-op with Rogers Television in Durham Region. In return, we offer students hands-on opportunities to creatively contribute to the community, develop new skills, gain experience and learn what is involved in television production. Our program is structured to include job descriptions for a variety of positions Student goals, barriers and strategies are determined. Work directly with and receive feedback from our professional staff. Opportunities increase with time, dedication and skill. Assignments completed in the first stages of learning serve as benchmarks of progress. Students must be enthusiastic, reliable and familiar with video production. 3 PROGRAMMING ASSISTANT FULL DAY As a programming assistant, you will have an opportunity to learn a variety of skills from researching to shooting to editing. Initially, you will observe and assist our videographers with their day-to-day responsibilities. You will be exposed to the in-station preparation, as well as the field production that goes into following local events and productions. Learning opportunities will increase with your understanding of story development and camera techniques. With time and skill, you may advance to a videographer position! There are 6 main areas of learning: FOCUS Focusing on a good story RESEARCH Assist the producer with gathering research materials for the show PRE-SHOOT Preparing questions, site checking, etc THE SHOOT How to interview and ask questions. How to compose shots and operate the camera WRITING How to assemble the story before editing FINAL EDIT How to take the story to its final edited product. WORK TERM PREFERRED: Full-day, semester students NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 2 per term HOURS OF WORK: Flexible, though typically Monday-Friday, 9am 5pm position is to our local programming we need a reliable studio crew! Students must be able to work in a team environment with minimal supervision. Students MUST possess a class-g license and clean driving record.
4 MOBILE PRODUCTION FULL DAY As a mobile production assistant, you will have an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced live television production environment. You will learn all aspects of location setup and how to put together a variety of productions from the ground up. Initially, observation will be a large part of your routine; you will then graduate to hands-on crew positions. You will be exposed to all facets of mobile production, as well as the pre-production that goes into following local sporting and entertainment-based events. Previous mobile productions have included Ontario Hockey League coverage, OCAA Basketball, Ontario Summer Games, Bandwarz, Live New Years Eve event coverage, and much more. As a mobile production assistant, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of programs and special events including: OHL Primetime, our local coverage of the Oshawa Generals, OCAA Basketball and Volleyball, Auctions, Music Festivals & Concerts, Santa Claus Parades, Sports Hall of Fame Events, Election Coverage, and Many More You will be trained in the following areas: - Perform crew duties for production - Assist with all facets of setup, tear down and production - Available positions include: Camera, Audio, Graphics, Floor Director, Production Assistant, Instant Replay, Switching, Directing WORK TERM PREFERRED: Full-day, semester students NUMBER OF STUDENTS: Up to 4 per term HOURS OF WORK: Schedules vary depending on the nature of the event. Mobile productions generally run between 8 and 14 hours. Schedule will include evening and weekend hours, as required. During hockey season, mobile production assistants must attend all games which typically take place on Fridays and Sundays. REQUIREMENTS: Students must be able to work in a team environment with minimal supervision. Mobile productions can be physically demanding, so volunteers must be comfortable with lifting and moving heavy equipment
5 CURRENT AFFAIRS FULL DAY As a current affairs assistant, you will have an opportunity to learn how to learn all facets of producing a current affairs talk show. This includes, but is not limited to researching, interviewing, shooting, editing and writing, as well as taking part in the studio production roles. You will be exposed to the in-station preparation, as well as the field production that goes into following current events. There are 6 main areas of learning: FOCUS Focusing on a good story WORK TERM PREFERRED: Full-day, semester students NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 1 per term RESEARCH Assist the producer with gathering research materials for the show PRE-SHOOT Preparing questions, site checking, show preproduction WRITING How to assemble the story before editing, as well as scripting show segments EDITING How to take the story to its final edited product for inclusion in the live studio show. PRODUCTION Executing a live studio-show to incorporate all of the items listed above. HOURS OF WORK: 1 daytime shift for pre-production, and 3 evening shifts as to be present for the talk shows position is to our local programming we need a reliable crew! Students must be able to work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
6 MORNING PLACEMENT 1/2 DAY As part of the MORNING PRODUCTION CREW, students will work on our daily First Local Newsbreak, as well as the pre-taped segments for Daytime. This great opportunity allows students to gain hands on experience working in a television environment in various key production roles such operating the studio camera and floor directing to name a few! As part of the morning production crew, you will be trained in the following areas: CAMERA OPERATOR Frame and focus shots on the on-air talent VTR OPERATOR Rolls video elements such as news stories and credits during the show GRAPHICS OPERATOR Inputs and triggers the graphic elements during the show AUDIO OPERATOR Controls audio levels during the show and conducts mic checks FLOOR DIRECTOR Conveys the director s cues to the talent WORK TERM PREFERRED: Half-day, semester students NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 4 per term HOURS OF WORK: Monday Friday, 8:30am 11:00am position is to our local programming we need a reliable studio crew! Students must be able to work in a team environment with minimal supervision. Although not necessary, previous experience with video production, communications, drama or photography is definitely an asset!
7 AFTERNOON / EVENING PLACEMENT 1/2 DAY As part of the AFTERNOON / EVENING PRODUCTION CREW, students will work on a variety of shows both in studio and mobile settings. This is a great opportunity to learn how the different genres of shows come together. As part of the afternoon/evening production crew, you will be trained in the following areas: CAMERA OPERATOR Frame and focus shots on the on-air talent VTR OPERATOR Rolls video elements such as news stories and credits during the show GRAPHICS OPERATOR Inputs and triggers the graphic elements during the show AUDIO OPERATOR Controls audio levels during the show and conducts mic checks WORK TERM PREFERRED: Half-day, semester students NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 4 per term FLOOR DIRECTOR Conveys the director s cues to the talent HOURS OF WORK: Various, depending on the show. Students are sometimes required after 4:00pm. position is to our local programming we need a reliable studio crew! Students must be able to work in a team environment with minimal supervision. Although not necessary, previous experience with video production, communications, drama or photography is definitely an asset!
8 EDITING ASSISTANT (1/2 or Full Day) As an editing assistant, you will have the opportunity to learn and apply hands on techniques with both linear and non-linear editing. Your responsibilities may include: - Capturing and digitizing footage - Archiving video - Creating program dubs to DVD - Assisting with daily editing assignments - Assisting with long term projects WORK TERM PREFERRED: Half-day or full-day semester students NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 2 per term HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday 9am 4pm (full day) or 9am-1pm / 12pm-4pm (half day) position is to our local programming Students must be able to work in a team environment with minimal supervision. NOTE: Students MUST have past experience and a good working knowledge of editing software, such as Adobe Premiere, AVID, Final Cut Pro or similar.
