3 We ve upgraded our network! Welcome to the next generation in network technology. In order to provide owners of MDUs (Building Owners) with advanced service offerings in the future, we are investing in a next generation fibre network in your neighbourhood. This network supplies a huge amount of bandwidth into the MDU which means the occupants of the MDU (Residents) can expect higher quality and more reliable Home Phone, High Speed Internet and TV services, now and in the future. In addition, with the MTS FiON Network, the MDU will also be in a perfect position to meet the Residents evolving telecommunication needs due to the significantly increased bandwidth available to each suite in the MDU on the network. The launch of the MTS FiON Network in the MDU also means that the Residents will now be eligible for the next generation of high definition television MTS Ultimate TV service. With Ultimate TV, MTS customers have access to exciting new features such as high quality HD programming, our Whole Home PVR service, and our Interactive Program Guide. In addition, the MTS FiON Network provides the Residents with its fastest broadband connections available, enabling the development of new High Speed Internet plans exclusive to the new network. With the MTS FiON Network, the MDU will be set up for the long term as additional wiring upgrades will likely not be required for a long time. The MDU will be in a perfect position to access the newest MTS products and services as they are launched. Visit mts.ca/fion for details. 1

4 MTS Fibre Optics Installation Guidelines for Greenfield (new) and Brownfield Renovation (existing under renovation) Multiple Dwelling Units (MDU) A Multi Dwelling Unit (MDU) is defined as: apartment block condominium buildings with 5 or more suites in a single property (fed by one shared drop/cable per MDU) MTS is deploying a new fibre optic network based on Passive Optical Network technology, or PON, to deliver High Speed Internet, TV and Home Phone services under the MTS FiON Network brand name. In order to deliver this service, MTS will supply a fibre optic cable to each suite in the MDU. The single fibre cable will be used to support all MTS FiON Network branded services (such as MTS Ultimate TV, High Speed Internet, and Home Phone) to the suite s occupant. Purpose of this document To provide Building Owners with information and general guidelines required to support an MTS fibre in-building riser installation. These guidelines apply: During the design phase for Low Voltage conduit (pathway) and cabling to support the MTS FiON Network For buildings under construction where in-building riser systems or pathways are accessible to all suites in the MDUs this includes all pathways to areas such as entrance systems, common area HSI or TV services, alarm services or Lobby Cam services, including Elevator Phone service in the MDU where MTS provides the MTS FiON Network This document will serve as a general guideline for the installation of MTS in-building fibre material and equipment. Please contact MTS at or to arrange a meeting and/or site visit to discuss details and exact requirements for installing MTS FiON in the MDU. 2

The Fibre Optic network is connected to the copper wiring inside the suite by a device called an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). The ONT converts the fibre optic signal so that it can be distributed over the in-suite wiring. Description 14.5 spacing Height from floor 48 (min) Wood/Metal studding *Standard 2 X 4 stud depth. Under this agreement, MTS will be responsible for providing and installing all fibre material and MTS equipment to the entrance of each suite. This includes maintenance of the fibre entering the suite (commonly referred to as the in-building riser wiring). Where access to the building riser (or pathway) is not available in existing MDUs under renovation, MTS will work with the Building Owner to design a solution for the riser pathway. Several design and installation solutions are available to Building Owners that will vary depending on the age, type, size and construction material used to construct your MDU. Please note: MTS will also provide smaller in-suite distribution boxes where spacing is limited inside the mounting area or where surface mounted distribution boxes cannot be supported. T he Building Owner is responsible for providing MTS with access to the Main Telephone Room (MTR) in the MDU, secondary communication rooms and for the installation of the in-building riser space (pathways) or conduit required to service each suite. The Building Owner is responsible for providing MTS access to all suites in the MDU. Buildings Owners are responsible for providing in-building riser wiring (such as copper or coax wiring) where Residents subscribe to services provided by other telecommunication service providers. The fibre optic material and equipment installed by MTS remains the exclusive property of MTS. 10 3

6 In-Suite Equipment The ONT is powered by an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) that also provides power for emergency service in the event of an AC power outage. The wall mounted ONT must be a minimum of 1 inch (2.5 cm) from any obstruction and mounted a minimum of 5 inches (12.5 cm) from the finished floor height and/or connecting wall. The UPS must be mounted a minimum of 1 inch (2.5 cm) from any obstruction and between 3-4 inches (7.5 and 10 cm) from the ONT and mounted such that the Resident can replace the battery inside the UPS when required. The UPS requires a standard grounded 3 prong non-gfci 120V 60Hz outlet within 6 feet (1.83m) of where the ONT is mounted. The required spacing to support the installation of the ONT and UPS is typically 28 inches (71 cm) in width and 19 inches (48 cm) in height. If an in-suite distribution box (IDB) is being installed to support the installation of the ONT and UPS it must have a minimum of 6 inches (15 cm) unobstructed airspace in the front, above, and below all surfaces in a minimum area of a 3ft x 6ft x 7ft (90 cm x 180 cm x 210 cm) (D x W x H) room and requires 15 (38cm) clearance to open the access door. Any communication termination blocks located in the suite Utility Room must be placed no closer then 900mm from any AC breaker/fuse panels in said room. Exceptions to this requirement, must be discussed and agreed to by a MTS representative. Please note, the Building Owner must provide two standard non- GFCI AC power receptacles (providing four available AC outlets) installed inside the IDB. Both pairs of outlets should be on a single, dedicated 15A branch circuit to prevent disruption of service. For further details relating to the IDB please refer to the MTS In-Suite Pre-Wiring Guidelines section. Additional equipment MTS services such as High Speed Internet or Ultimate TV will require a router and/or TV Set-Top-Box(es). 4

7 Main Telephone Room (MTR) Equipment MTS will install a Fibre Distribution Terminal (FDT) in the MTR to connect the building entrance fibres installed by MTS to each in-building fibre drop cable that will be installed to each suite. The FDT can be up to 52 inches wide by 21 inches (130 cm by 52.5 cm) in height and will require 52 inches (130 cm) clearance to open the access door as shown below. The MDU may also require additional FDTs that are up to 30 inches wide by 20 inches (75 cm by 50 cm) in height in different areas of your MDU (such as secondary communication rooms on upper floors) and 30 (75cm) clearance to open the door. 5

8 Notes: The FDT(s) required for the MDU may need to be connected to a common building ground. When grounding is required, the preferred method is to attach to the main building ground. Electrical power is not required to support the installation of the Fibre Distribution Terminal(s). MTS will require easy access by a Field Service Technician to service and/or fulfill new and existing customer requests for MTS FiON Network services. Please contact MTS to discuss cabling and electrical power requirements for additional services such as entrance systems, common area HSI or TV services, Main floor alarm, Lobby Cam services and Elevator Phone service in the MDU. This Fibre Optic Installation guideline is provided to Residential MDU Owners for informational purposes only. Building Owners should contact MTS at or for additional details. 6

9 MTS In-Suite Pre-Wiring Guidelines Purpose of this section To provide in-suite pre-wiring guidelines that supports communications cabling for MTS TV, High Speed Internet and Home Phone services within MDUs. This guide applies to all MDUs under construction where in-suite wiring pathways are accessible in all suites. Material Guidelines: All materials must meet a minimum of ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.1, Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling Standards All cables used must have proven industry performance. The following communications cabling (hereafter referred to as cabling) must be used in all pre-wired suites: Minimum Cat 5e for digital TV/HSI services and voice services (Cat 5e must be compliant with the ANSI/TIA/EIA-568-B.1 standard) RG6 Coax for TV broadband All cable must be FT4/CMR or FT6/CMP rated as required. General Wiring Guidelines Cabling must be run separately from electrical services and must conform to the latest CSA, Canadian Electrical Code, Manitoba Electrical Code and Local Building Codes standards. Cabling must not run in the same joist/stud holes as electrical wires. Cabling can run through an individually drilled or a common hole. The diameter of the hole must be at least ¼ or 6.5 mm wider than the bundle of cables to be run though it. Cabling must not be subjected to any of the following conditions: Walked on or exposed to any physical compression. Exposed to any chemicals including any type of paint including overspray. Handled or placed at temperatures below manufacture recommendation (typically 5 degrees Celsius). Kinked and then straightened. Pulled around, over or through any rough or sharp surface Exceed maximum pulling tension 25 foot lbs for Cat 5e and 80 foot lbs for RG6. Ensure minimal bend radius does not exceed 4 times outside diameter of cable. 7

10 Cables must be home run to an in-suite distribution box (IDB) or to a central wiring point in the suite (typically located in a laundry or utility room). Cables must never be daisy-chained. Three feet or 90 cm of slack must be left in the in-suite distribution box for the installer to terminate the cable runs. Cables must not come within 2 inches or 50 mm of unprotected high voltage cables (110V and greater). Cable is considered protected if separated from high voltage cables by properly grounded BX or metallic conduit. Cables must not be run in hot or cold air ducts. All cables must be labeled so the in-suite outlet location can be determined. Cables must be labeled while they are being run (not afterwards). Cables must be marked with proper wire tags rather than pieces of electrical tape, masking tape, nicks, etc. All cable runs must be on a grid pattern and not by line of sight or shortest route. When cables are run parallel to floor joist or beams, they must be properly secured (by stapling, etc.) at an interval equal to the stapler length. Vertical cable runs to the electrical boxes or MPLS plate must be attached to the studding so that the cables will not be pulled out by the other trades when they are insulating or working in the general area. After all cables are run back to the in-suite distribution box, they must be neatly coiled up and secured in the distribution box to protect from any damage. The distribution box must remain covered at all times during construction with a protective material, such as plastic, to protect cables from any chemicals such as paint (paint will immediately degrade the performance of the cable sheath). 8

11 Electrical Box/MPLS Plate Guidelines: All electrical boxes or MPLS plates used for communications cabling locations must be installed at the standard height above the floor per the Canadian Electrical Code. Electrical boxes must be installed at the proper depth on studs for the appropriate dry wall that will be installed. If an electrical box is installed on an outside wall, a vapor barrier such as Iberville Model VB1-CRT or equivalent must be installed at the time of pre-wire. At each pre-wired outlet location, there must be 2 electrical boxes installed per the following two scenarios: A wall stud with one electrical box located on each side (one for communications cabling and one for electrical to power devices) If using two wall studs, the electrical boxes must be located in the same air space between the two studs. MTS MDU Pre-Wiring Guidelines An in-suite distribution box is required in each suite to serve as a cross-connect location between in-suite wiring and the communication riser. MTS will provide one in-suite distribution box for each suite if required. The in-suite distribution box is typically installed by the electrician and the typical location is the in-suite laundry room. Drawing of the two (2) styles of in-suite distribution boxes available for installation are shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. All in-suite cables from each outlet/mpls location must be home run back to an In-Suite Distribution Box (IDB). A typical in-suite wiring diagram is provided in Figure 3. 9

14 MTS In-Suite MDU Guidelines Wiring Configuration A Broadband outlet location requires a minimum of 2 Cat 5e cables and 1 RG6 Coaxial cable to support TV, Internet and Voice services. All Broadband locations in exterior walls will require an electrical outlet box or MPLS/Drywall mud plate outlet and vapour barrier. All Broadband locations in interior walls will require a MPLS/ drywall mud plate or electrical box. Cables at the location must be covered with a protective material (such as plastic) at all times during construction to protect cables from any chemicals (such as paint). Paint will immediately degrade the performance of the cable sheath. For all cables installed at each broadband outlet location, an extra length of 12 inches (30 cm) of cable must be provided and stored safely in the wall cavity or electrical box. MTS will provide the required Cat 5e (minimum) and RG6 cable for the electrician/contractor for installation of the broadband outlets in each suite. A signed MTS Pre-Wire Agreement (In-Suite Pre-Wire Installation Agreement) is required between MTS and the Building Owner before any cabling starts or cabling material is shipped to the site. The cables at each outlet are terminated at the time the services are installed for each Resident.
