4 2.1 TOP DIY RECORDING TERMS YOU NEED TO KNOW! CCTV: Closed Circuit Television. A television system, synonymous with security, and used for private purposes, not for public or general broadcast DVR: Digital Video Recorder. This is a device that records video signal digitally. Normally this is on a large hard drive in the machine. CIF: Common Intermediate Format, a recording resolution originally designed for video conferencing. It is one quarter (1/4) the size of a standard definition TV picture (352x288 PAL). CIF offers the most recording time but may not provide the level of detail required. D1: D1 is a full size standard definition TV picture (704x576 PAL). It is the highest recording resolution on some DVRs. D1 is 4 CIF frames arranged in a square, and therefore takes approximately 4 times the recording space of a CIF picture but offers better picture quality. High Definition: A term used to classify the image quality of TVs, DVD players, security systems and more, and measured in pixels. Greater picture quality with more pixels giving better detail that can be viewed. Video that is better quality than a standard definition picture ie 720p and above is usually considered high definition. HDMI: A compact audio/video interface for transmitting uncompressed digital data. Commonly used in HDTVs & monitors. PAL: PAL is the television standard used primarily in the UK, EU and Australia. PAL defines a standard television picture as 704x576 pixels at approximately 25 frames per second. Resolution: Refers to the sharpness and clarity of an image. NVR: Network Video Recorder. A device that utilizes digital IP video surveillance streams initially processed at the camera then streamed to the NVRs for storage or remote viewing. NVRs can be wired or wireless. Some hybrid NVRs retain some of the features of a DVR with the network IP connection solely from the NVR, not within the camera. SDI: Serial Digital Interface. A type of DVR capable of capturing, recording and transmitting multiple streams of high definition surveillance video. VGA: A video output port on a DVR (usually blue in colour) which connects to a compatible computer monitor or high definition television. It supports significantly higher resolutions than the standard composite video outputs. Next page for more Page 4

5 960H: A widescreen version of D1, with an image quality equivalent to a DVD player. The actual image size of 960H is 960x576 pixels. 720P: Is a broadcasting standard that displays the signal showing 1280 pixels horizontal and 720 pixels vertically per image on screen. 720 demonstrates the number of horizontal scan lines of the image display resolution. 1080P: Is full High-Definition video that displays 1920 pixels horizontal and 1080 pixels vertically per image on screen demonstrates the number of horizontal scan lines of the image display resolution. 6 2.2 DVR FEATURES Here are some key DVR features worth getting to know: HDD: Hard Disk Drive. Capacity is usually measured in GigaBytes (GB) or TeraBytes (TB). Channels: Is the amount of cameras you can stream at once through your security system. Normally 4, 8, 9, 12, 16, 24 channels are available with traditional security systems. Real-Time: Means 25 frames per second, meaning you have smooth video playback that is close to watching things live with the naked eye in real-time. It is the same frame rate picture quality as your TV or DVR. Frame Rate: Is the number of images displayed per second: 25 frames per second is considered the optium frame for smooth video playback. HD: High definition refers to video resolution of 720p (1280 x 720 pixels or 1 Megapixel) or above. 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels or 2.1 Megapixels) is known as full HD and 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels or 8.29 Megapixels) is known as ultra HD. Remote Viewing: This feature allows you to remotely review and download the recorded video footage on a Smartphone or Tablet. Video Output: Is a video port that enables video to be transfered through a connector that transfer analog or digital video files to a monitor or TV. Peer to Peer SwannLink: Is a method of transferring data directly between two devices typically over the Internet via a remote server. esata: Short for External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment. An extra storage device to easily backup incident video to. Motion Triggered Recording: Motion detection recording is the process of detecting a change in position of an object relative to its surroundings or the change in the surroundings relative to an object. 8 2.4 WHAT IS CIF TECHNOLOGY? CIF stands for Common Intermediate Format. CIF itself is a quarter of full resolution TV. Video quality is similar to the lowest resolution you would see on Youtube. It has quickly become superceded in recent years. *CIF is an Analog format. Page 8

9 2.5 WHAT IS D1 TECHNOLOGY? D1 is 4 times the image quality of conventional CIF digital video recorders. D1 is also an Analog format, and is an equivalent standard to DVD quality. D1 is quickly being superceded by 960H and higher resolution video formats. *D1 is an Analog format. This resolution suits smaller screens or can be enlarged on larger screens with some image distortion. Page 9

10 2.6 WHAT IS 960H TECHNOLOGY? 960H is the highest resolution available for Analog CCTV. It provides a 30% increase in resolution in comparison to D1. 960H is widescreen DVD-quality perfect for 16:9 monitors with a 16:9 screen orientation. It is a popular format for DIY security installations. This system is perfect for modern 16:9 widescreen LCD & LED TVs. Page 10

11 2.7 WHAT IS 720P TECHNOLOGY? 720p is high definition digital video, characterized by 720 horizontal lines of vertical resolution & progressive scan. 720p is also known as Real HD. Page 11

12 2.8 WHAT IS 1080P TECHNOLOGY? 1080p is high definition digital video, characterized by 1080 horizontal lines of vertical resolution and progressive scan. 1080p is also known as Full HD and is equivalent to a Blu-ray quality. Page 12
