Important Information Regarding Biometrics The LCD-420SI is an advanced biometric clocking device. There are a number of important considerations and factors which you should understand before implementation. How The LCD-420SI Works: The LCD-420SI is a 2-factor authentication biometric system. That is, the biometrics provide validation of an identity provided by a personal identification number or badge. The biometric sensor uses a radio frequency (RF) signal to read the inner layer of the finger. Because it scans the inner layer, this device can produce a print in more environmental conditions and with more skin types that most other biometric devices. Factors To Consider: Even with its advanced technology, the LCD-420SI cannot read every fingerprint. There are some fingers that are very hard to read either due to biology or injury. We suggest trying different fingers on each hand as most individuals have at least one finger that will work well when swiped correctly. Should you find that you have an employee that has trouble using the device, there are options for personalizing or bypassing the system for that employee. Please see page 9, go to and search for Biometric Validation. Also, some employees may need additional training. Begin by showing all employees the training video at Additionally, we have a training poster and a training presentation. These are available on our support site. Visit and search for Biometric Validation. After enrollment, the system will be fairly good at correctly identifying fingerprints. However, during the first few weeks especially, the system may not recognize a swipe, even after several tries. The incidence of this can be greatly reduced with good enrollments and proper swipe technique. If employees continue to have trouble with biometric validation: 1. Use 10 enrollments, five times on on finger, and 5 times on the same finger on the other hand. 2. Use 10 progressive enrollment prints. To allow the system to learn your fingers and improve scanning reliability over time. 3. Try clearing the prints and re-enrolling. 4. Set the global setting for Enrollment Fingerprint Capture Method to Multi- Read. 5. Raise the Allowable Identification Attempts to give employees more chances to try. 6. Have employees enroll two or more fingers. Then, either one can be used and employees don't need to remember which finger is enrolled. 7. Lower the Fingerprint Threshold to accept good, but not perfect matches. Page TimeIPS
Mount the Display Failure to mount and maintain the LCD-420SI unit with the following guidelines will void your warranty. Mount the unit in a dry, indoor location with controlled temperature and humidity. Do NOT use the unit in any location where rapid temperature changes may cause condensation. The rated operating temperature is between 5C and 35C (41F to 95F). Do not store or use the device in locations that would expose the unit to direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause damage. The device may become warm during normal use. This does NOT indicate malfunction. Mount the device away from strong magnetic or electro-magnetic fields, such as those produced by microwave ovens, two-way radios, or industrial equipment. On the LCD-420SI, keep the fingerprint sensor clean and free of dust. Clean only with a soft, dry cloth. Do NOT use cleaning products on the unit. DB-9 Connector Mount the LCD-420SI where employees can swipe their thumb or finger flush to the surface of the sensor. TimeIPS Page 5
Connect The Cable Connect the small, single-connector end of the cable to the LCD display. Connect the multi-connector end of the cable to a TimeIPS system as shown. The display should be connected with the TimeIPS system powered off. If the display is connected with the power on, the system may need to be restarted for biometric validation to begin. Cables may be routed through any of the four access channels, or direct into the wall for more permanent mounts. USB Connector USB Connector Speaker Jack Page TimeIPS
Configuring Global Biometric Options To configure biometric validation settings, log into TimeIPS and select Administration -> Clocking -> Biometric Validation. Higher levels of security require a more exact fingerprint match. This may require multiple attempts and result in more false negatives. These levels are more likely to fail to recognize an employee's fingerprint, denying the clock attempt, but are less likely to allow an incorrect fingerprint to be accepted. Lower security levels will accept weaker matches, but may allow an incorrect finger to be accepted in rare cases. Normal Authentication is recommended for typical clocking use. High Security Authentication and Maximum Security Authentication may be desirable when TimeIPS relays are used for access control. When an employee fails to acquire a matching fingerprint upon clocking, the option exists to either deny the clocking event or to warn the employee and flag the clocking event. If Warn and Flag is chosen, the employee's clocking event will be flagged and will turn red in the Time Edit screen. This sets the number of times employees may attempt to validate their fingerprint before the clocking attempt fails. The administrator has the option to choose Quick Enrollment and have only a single fingerprint read. If using quick enrollment, we highly recommend Progressive Enrollments. Failure to do this could result in a very high percentage of false negatives during the authentication process. Additionally, the Multi-Read option provides for a better set of fingerprints for authentication during enrollment because it compares the three prints and, if they are too unlike each other, it will fail the set and require a re-scan. The multi-read option provides the best possible prints for authentication, making authentication more secure and easier for employees. We recommend always setting the number of Progressive Enrollments to 10 to reduce false negatives and improve performance over time. TimeIPS Page 7
Configuring Global Biometric Options (cont) This sets the number of fingerprints that are stored per employee to be used for authentication. The number of captured fingerprints can be multiple enrollments of a single or multiple fingers. (For example: If using 10 captured prints setting, you could enroll all 10 fingers, or enroll both index fingers, 5 times each.) In the event that there is a need for the biometric validation to be bypassed due to a relay needing to be triggered upon the reading of a valid id/badge, set this option to No. Otherwise, the default setting for this option requires that all employees must pass biometric validation to trigger relay functions. Some versions of TimeIPS allow prints to be confirmed on the large display. This can be helpful during enrollment. Some versions of TimeIPS allow prints that failed authentication to be displayed. This option can be helpful for employees to see the print they are producing and can help employees improve their swiping technique. Use this option when employees consistently have trouble authenticating. This value simply represents the number of seconds that the system will wait to receive a fingerprint before it times out. Page TimeIPS
Adjusting Employee Fingerprint Settings Employee settings are in Administration -> Employee Management -> Employee Biometrics. The TimeIPS system allows configuration settings to be changed on an individual basis. This can be helpful in the event that an employee either cannot, for physical or other reasons, use the biometric fingerprint reader or when a security level different from the default is needed. Individual Fingerprint Threshold Ranging from No Authentication Required to Maximum Security Authentication, the threshold can be set at any level for any employee. Please remember that the higher the security level, the higher the chance for rejection of the authentication and a low level of security may allow an incorrect fingerprint to be accepted. No Authentication Required means that the employee will not be asked to present a fingerprint. The Accept Any Fingerprint setting will require an employee to present a fingerprint for authentication, even though the system will not match it. This is ideal in an environment where an employee either cannot or does not have to authenticate but the appearance of all employees being required to authenticate needs to be maintained. On Failure As in the Global Settings, this setting will either Deny an employee from the clock event upon failure of authentication or Warn and Flag will flag the clock event and turn it red in the system. Enrolled Prints Lists the number of fingerprint data sets that each employee has on file. Touch prints are prints enrolled with a TimeIPS touch biometrics sensor. Swipe prints are prints enrolled with a TimeIPS swip biometrics sensor, such as with this LCD-420SI. Bothe types of prints can be present in the system at the same time. Progressive Lists the number of progressive fingerprint data sets that each employee has on file. Progressive prints are added automatically so the system can learn prints better over time. Clear Click the Clear to remove all the enrollments and progressive prints for an employee so they can re-enroll. TimeIPS Page 9
Train and Enroll Employees Employee Training: Proper employee training and implementation is essential for success and satisfaction with biometric systems. Please use the following guidelines to train employees: View the training video at We recommended 10 captured prints and using 5 enrollments for one finger, then 5 more for the same finger on the other hand. Open your hand and place the top joint of your finger on the blue line of the sensor Place your finger so that the finger covers the whole surface of the sensor. Keep your whole finger touching the sensor and slide your hand at a constant speed toward your body. Do not touch too lightly, or push too hard on the sensor's surface. Press hard enough to flatten out the skin of the finger onto the sensor. Don't press so hard that the finger stutters or jumps when moving over the sensor. Your TimeIPS biometric reader has several position and speed sensors that detect the contact status and swipe speed of the finger. The last sensor is the image capturing sensor that reads the fingerprint. For that reason, it is vital that you maintain steady pressure and a constant speed through the entire swiping process in order to get the best possible fingerprint read. Position/Speed Sensors Image Capturing Sensors Page TimeIPS
How To Swipe Your Finger How To Swipe Your Finger 1. Open your hand and place the top joint of your finger on the blue line of the sensor Place your fingertip on the top of the sensor Place the top joint of your finger on the blue line of the sensor 2. Press your finger lightly on the sensor and slide your hand at a constant speed toward your body. Press your finger so that the finger covers the whole surface of the sensor. Keep your finger touching the image capturing sensor. Swipe your finger at a constant speed toward your body. TimeIPS Page 11
Examples of Fingerprint Enrollment Examples of captured fingerprint images To improve the accuracy of authentication, please enroll fingerprint data in a similar manner to what is shown in the Good example below. Good Example The image contains a w hole fingerprint image w ith no distortion or missing data. The image is missing the end The image is missing the fingertip The image is distorted The image is compressed Only the fingertip was touching the sensor while swiping. The finger was tilted up while swiping. The finger was not swiped in a straight line. The finger was not swiped at a constant speed. Place the top joint of finger on the sensor and then swipe. Ensure that finger is touching the sensor while swiping finger. Ensu re th a t th e fi n g e rti p i s to u c h i n g th e se n so r, re l a x yo u r fi n g e r a n d swi p e your finger agai n. Open your hand, place a finger on the sensor and slide your finger and your whole hand in a straight line. Swipe your finger at a constant speed. Employee Enrollment: Enrollment will begin automatically the first time an employee clocks in or out after the fingerprint validation unit is installed. The enrollment process requires that an employee place the same finger or thumb against the reader a number of times to improve the reliability of matching. Page TimeIPS
Troubleshooting Enrollment Troubleshooting Enrollment Trouble Enrolling Watch enrollment video and read finger placement guide carefully. Try again, and/or use a different finger. In multi-read mode, after scanning one finger three times, enrollment is not successful Fingerprint image is blurred or lacks detail Fingerprint image is shortened or too small Fingerprint image is missing the complete fingerprint (or V-shaped) Fingerprint image is blurry or distorted. Fingerprint image is just a band Fingerprint looks perfect until bottom with blur trailing off Fingerprint result is solid black mass Fingerprint shows faint ridges but is blurry Fingerprint is wavy or blurry on one side A finger with a small number of readable points, caused by wrinkles or bruising, may not be able to be enrolled. Please use another finger. Do not press too hard. This can affect the sensor's ability to read your fingerprint or even cause permanent damage. Be sure to press your finger lightly on the sensor and slide your whole hand over the sensor at a constant speed. Open your hand and place your whole finger on the sensor so that it covers the entire area of the sensor. The sensor cannot read only your fingertip. Be sure to pull your hand straight toward your body, running your finger down the sensor in a straight line. Any deviation in direction will cause a blurry print. Do not roll your finger off of the sensor as you pull your finger toward your body Do not push finger forward then pull finger back Finger is too wet. Please dry finger and sensor and try again. Finger is too dirty. Please clean finger and try again. Do not place side of finger on sensor. Be sure to place entire finger on sensor so that it covers sensor. TimeIPS Page 13
Troubleshooting Authentication Troubleshooting Authentication Trouble Authenticating No Match Found error Could Not Read Fingerprint error No Match Found error Could Not Read Fingerprint error When troubleshooting does not solve error Use proper finger placement and swipe correctly. Ensure that the user is using the same finger that they enrolled with Make sure that user's hands are reasonably clean so that they can be read. Raise the number of attempts to ten to give the employee up to ten tries to obtain a match Follow the troubleshooting steps for enrollment Re-enroll employee making certain that only high-quality prints are retained in the database A Quick Note On Employee Identity Security Unless specifically requested, the TimeIPS system, nor TimeIPS, does not store an image of the employee's fingerprint. The TimeIPS reader looks for and maps the pattern on the finger or thumb and then creates a mathematical profile of the print using a sophisticated algorithm. That profile is then stored as binary data to be used for later comparisons. The data stored within the TimeIPS system uses formatting and encoding that is proprietary to the TimeIPS system and can not be used to re-create a fingerprint or for any other purpose outside of TimeIPS.
