6 Introduction Who is this for? This book is primarily written to be a valuable tool for all sales personnel who have a responsibility and interest in Triax multi switches. The primary goal was to provide all material and facts available that can be helpful in a sales situation, all in one place and make it possible for anyone to prepare a demonstration and/or training for the Triax Multi Switch products. This book is a work in progress. It comprises information available at the time of publication, but may not have information on the absolute latest products at all times. Check the revision number you are reading (see Title page), and compare to the copy available on the Triax A/S network in Hornsyld, at the address: \\Traddk\Users\Marketing\1 - TRIAX SALES & MARKETING MATERIALS\Product sheets and manuals\product sheets\multiswitches\sales Manual Please contact your sales representative for information about updates if you do not have access to the above. How to use this book The first half of this book is focussed on the actual products, divided into a chapter for the individual Product Series (TMS 5x, TMP 5x, TMM 5x, TMS 9x, TMS 9xC, TMS 17x C/T). Every product Series starts with a page presenting the most important sales arguments, and a short description of the characteristics of the Series. This is followed by technical specification sheets for every product. In addition to the technical specification sheets in this book, a number of short-form, customer oriented, product information sheets are made available on a running basis. Second half of this book contains reference, general background information and details of a multi switch installation, and an explanation to every component and its role in a system. This should allow you to use the second half of the book to gain background knowledge about multi switches and later for finding answers to questions from the field. On a day-today basis the first half hopefully gives you the information necessary to keep your product knowledge up to date. Need more? If you find errors or have questions about issues on multi switches that are not covered by this book, please immediately contact the author. He is very much interested in any information or hints that can make this book more valuable as a sales and training tool: (mailto: jny@triax.dk) This is the first book in a planned Triax Quick Guide series of salesman s books about Triax Product groups. 7 One position (2 and 4 polarity) Multi Switches In Europe, one single satellite position means a satellite that transmit 4 different polarities: (Low Band frequencies, Vertical and Horizontal polarity, and High Band frequencies, Vertical and Horizontal polarity). Reception is done via a dish and a normal Universal Single LNB to a SetTopBox. For multi switch reception a QUATTRO LNB is used. It provides the 4 individual polarities on four separate outputs. In other areas of the World, as in India, Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific regions, typically 2-polarity satellites are being used. They do not have the concept of Low-Band and High-Band, only one single Band is used, and therefore has a total of only two polarities. For multi switch reception a DUAL LNB is used. It provides the 2 individual polarities on two separate outputs. For more information, please see the chapter Satellites and polarities. 19 Line Amplifier (For 4 x SAT and 1 x TER) TMS 5 x Series TMS 55 AMP P/N: General description: Triax TMS 55 AMP is an easy to install Line Amplifier to be used with the TMS 5x Series multi switch products. It is used to amplify the satellite and terrestrial signals to compensate for cable losses in the system. A switch allows terrestrial power to be switched off in the upward direction (to avoid DC short circuits in some types of aerials). The TMS 55 AMP has 4 x satellite line amplifiers with 20 db amplification each (fixed 5 db slope) and one terrestrial line amplifier with a 17 db amplification. The terrestrial amplifier also has an adjustable slope of 7-12 db. Separate attenuators allows 0-15 db adjustable attenuation on the satellite signals and 0-17 db adjustable attenuation on the terrestrial signal.. All input connectors are colour coded to avoid installation errors and make the installation an easy and simple task. The TMS 5x Series family also comprises the TMS 5x, TMS 55 TAP, TMS 5-PSU and TMS 510 SPLIT units allowing installers to build larger cascadable systems with many subscrber outputs. 21 Power Supply / Power Inserter TMS 5 x Series TMS 5-PSU P/N: / General description: Triax TMS 5 PSU is an easy to install Power Supply / Power Inserter to be used with the TMS 5x Series products. It is used to insert power into the trunk distribution lines and supplies the LNB as well as amplifiers and multiswitches in the system. A switch allows power to be sourced up, down or in both directions in the system. The correct use of Quattro LNB units in TMS 5x multiswitch systems is recommended. However, this unit provides 14 VDC and 18 VDC on the vertical and horisontal distribution lines respectively. This means that by adding a 22kHz inserter on the two high Band lines, an existing QUAD LNB in an old installation can be used to simulate a Quattro LNB. All input connectors are color coded to avoid installation errors and make the installation an easy and simple task. The TMS 5x Series family also comprises the TMS 5x, TMS 55 TAP, TMS 55 AMP and TMS 510 SPLIT units allowing installers to build larger cascadable systems with many subscrber outputs. 23 5 Way Tap (For 4 x SAT and 1 x TER) TMS 5 x Series TMS 55 TAP-12 P/N: TMS 55 TAP-15 P/N: TMS 55 TAP-20 P/N: TMS 55 TAP-24 P/N: General description: Triax TMS 55 TAP is an easy to install 5 way passive tap unit to be used with the TMS 5x Series multiswitch products. It is used to tap out the trunk distribution lines in installations where many users are required using individual TMS 5x 4 to TMS 5x16 products. The TMS 55 TAP has 4 x satellite line taps and one terrestrial line tap with a 12, 15, 20 or 24 db tap loss. The insertion loss (through-loss) is as low as 1.2 db for terrestrial signals and 2,5 db for satellite IF signals. The tap unit has full power pass in the trunk lines and DC pass via the tap outputs to source all power via the LNB trunk lines. This allows the use of TMS 5x units without using individual power supplies. As this works both ways it also allows the use of TMS 5xP units as power supply for the system. Normally a TMS 55 TAP-12 is the natural choice in a TMS distribution system. However, as signal levels can be high close to the dish or just after a TMS 55 AMP amplifier, the TMS 55 TAP Series allows the system architect to compensate for the fact that higher attenuation may be necessary at the upper part of a distribution trunk as opposed to the lower end where longer cables provide for the attenuation. All input connectors are colour coded to avoid installation errors and make the installation an easy and simple task. The TMS 5x Series family also comprises the TMS 5x, TMS 55 TAP, TMS 5-PSU and TMS 510 SPLIT units allowing installers to build larger cascadable systems with many subscriber outputs. 25 5 Way splitter (For 4 x SAT and 1 x TER) TMS 5 x Series TMS 510 SPLIT P/N: General description: Triax TMS 510 SPLIT is an easy to install 5 x 2-way passive splitter unit to be used with the TMS 5x Series multi switch products. It is used to split the distribution trunk (distribution backbone) in installations where many users are required. In distribution setups where the distribution trunk needs to be shared amongst a number of flats or entrances it is vital that a symmetrical distribution is maintained. This is easily achieved using the TMS 510 SPLIT, which ensures the best possible signal resources in the system. The TMS 510 SPLIT provides 4 x satellite line splitters and one terrestrial line splitter with an insertion loss (through-loss) as low as 4 db for terrestrial signals and 6 db for satellite IF signals. The splitter unit has full power pass in the trunk lines and DC pass via the outputs to source all power via the LNB trunk lines. This allows the use of TMS 5x units without using individual power supplies. As this works both ways it also allows the use of TMS 5xP units as power supply for the system. All input connectors are colour coded to avoid installation errors and make the installation an easy and simple task. The TMS 5x Series family also comprises the TMS 5x, TMS 55 TAP, TMS 5-PSU and TMS 55 AMP units allowing installers to build larger cascadable systems with many subscriber outputs. 33 Multiswitch for 1 satellite position (4 x SAT polarities) and terrestrial signals. Stand alone with power supply. TMP 5x Series TMP 5x8 P/N: TMP 5x12 P/N: TMP 5x16 P/N: TMP 5x24 P/N: TMP 5x32 P/N: General description: Triax TMP 5x is an is an excellent solution to the dilemma in many stand-alone multi switch installations: The more subscribers you want to supply from one multi switch, the longer and different the cables will be. Using traditional multi switches this will present subscribers with very different signal levels, and can cause all kind of problems. All TMP multi switches feature a unique attenuator for each polarity, which enables you to secure a uniform level no matter where the multi switch is placed. Near or far away from the dish and LNB, the same switch can be used. TMP units with 24 and 32 outputs has an additional feature, a slide switch, to compensate for long, medium and short cables. This product series comprises versions with 8, 12, 16, 24 and 32 subscriber outputs in one installation. TMP 5x is an active system with internal amplifiers to compensate for the insertion loss. The integrated power supply powers the amplifiers and the LNB in the system. A set-top box is not required at users outlet to receive terrestrial signals. All input connectors are colour coded to avoid installation errors and make the installation an easy and simple task. Page 33 of 144

45 Two position (8 polarity) Multi Switches In Europe, two satellite positions means two satellites that transmits 4 different polarities each: (Low Band frequencies, Vertical and Horizontal polarity, and High Band frequencies, Vertical and Horizontal polarity). Reception is done via two dishes and two normal Universal Single LNBs and sourced via a DiSEqC switch to an STB. For multi switch reception two QUATTRO LNB are used. They provide the 2 x 4 individual polarities on two by four separate outputs totalling 8 satellite polarities. A DiSEqC switch is included in the multi switch In other areas of the World, as in India, Australia, New Zealand and other Pacific regions, typically 2-polarity satellites are being used. They do not have the concept of Low-Band and High-Band, only one single Band is used, and therefore has a total of only two polarities. For multi switch reception a DUAL LNB is used. It provides the 2 individual polarities on two separate outputs. In this situation 2 positions means 4 polarities, so USE TMS 5x/5xP Series units to receive two positions! For more information, please see the chapter Satellites and polarities. 67 DiSEqC Bridger units for TMM Series TMM Series TMM 2B P/N: TMM 3B P/N: TMS 4B P/N: General description: The Triax TMM DiSEqC Bridger units are a simple way to build a full multi position multi switch installation using the TMM 4x and TMM5x cascadable multi switches. The TMM 2B, TMM 3B and TMM 4B units are traditional 2x1, 3x1 and 4x1 DiSEqC switches, but with a form factor, that makes them an easy plug-and-play solution for the TMM system. The DiSEqC Bridger units accepts terrestrial signal on all it inputs, which means that no matter where a TMM 5x units is placed in a multi position installation, terrestrial loop-through is secured in all cases. The units have an adjustable attenuator of 0-10dB to allow an even finer user-by-user levelling of the output signals. A slide switch enables you to switch the two first SAT inputs to allow for operator-supplied boxes, that require the operators signals to always be available on SAT-position one. Page 67 of 144

69 3 and 4 position (12 and 16 polarity) Multi Switches In Europe, four satellite positions mean four satellites that transmit 4 different polarities each: (Low Band frequencies, Vertical and Horizontal polarity, and High Band frequencies, Vertical and Horizontal polarity). Reception is done via four dishes and four normal Universal Single LNBs and sourced via a DiSEqC switch to a STB. For multi switch reception four QUATTRO LNB are used. They provide the 4 x 4 individual polarities on four by four separate outputs totalling 16 satellite polarities. In this situation 4 positions means 8 polarities, so USE TMS 9xP Series units to receive four positions! For more information, please see the chapter Satellites and polarities. Versions with 4 and 8 subscriber outputs are suitable to build multi-position systems using TMM 2/3/4B Bridger units. TMM 5x12- and 16-Subcriber versions have parallel outputs to minimize installation space. In a multi satellite configuration the TMM 5x module can be placed as any position on the mounting plate. This generates a permanent terrestrial distribution to all outputs via the TMM 2/3/4B DiSEqC Bridger units. For general description and specification on TMM 4x and TMM 5x, please see under one position chapter. Page 85 of 144

89 DiSEqC Bridger units for TMM Series TMM Series TMM 2B P/N: TMM 3B P/N: TMS 4B P/N: General description: The Triax TMM DiSEqC Bridger units are a simple way to build a full multi position multi switch installation using the TMM 4x and TMM5x cascadable multi switches. Page 89 of 144

95 Multi switches, concept and overview The full presentation in PowerPoint format is available on the Triax network under Marketing Triax multiswitch products Concept and overview What is a multiswitch? A multiswitch enables many STB users to share a single dish/lnb installation and cabling. A way to avoid many dishes on a building. 1 Triax multiswitch products Concept and overview Why use a multiswitch? Technically a Universal LNB can only feed a single STB Universal LNB types only supports up to 4 users (Single, Twin, Quad). 3 Page 95 of 144

96 Triax multiswitch products Concept and overview When to use a multiswitch? More than 4 users have their own STB and needs a dish. Many channels are required Users within a short distance from dish (< meters) and close to each other. 5 Triax multiswitch products Concept and overview Do NOT use a multiswitch when: Only 1-4 users with STB Only a few channels are required Long distances (> meters) Users does not want to buy a STB More than 4 SAT pos / 16 polarities needed Cabling is old, (not >862 MHz capable) and/or is not easy to change. 6 Page 96 of 144

97 Triax multiswitch products Concept and overview Is it possible to receive from more than one satellite? YES - solutions exists for 1 to 4 satellite positions (more possible) Requires DiSEqC support in STB Number of positions should be decided at design time (Districom Series provide a full upgrade path). 7 Triax multiswitch products Concept and overview Can a multiswitch system also distribute cable/terrestrial signals? YES, cable/terrestrial signals are in <862 MHz range, multiswitches distribute signals in the IF range ( MHz) Both can coexist on same cable 8 Page 97 of 144

117 Terrestrial distribution in a multi switch installation It is a general widespread misunderstanding that because a multi switch does have an RF terrestrial input and loop-through, it must be treated just like the IF distribution system, largely without any other external components. This is actually only very seldom the case and normally only true in smaller distribution networks. You should see the terrestrial input of a multi switch as a simple way to combine the IF and terrestrial RF signal onto many subscriber outputs rather than insist on having fully parallel and equal distribution setups for IF and RF. The standards, regulations and requirements, as well as physical entities as cable losses, etc. are very much different in the two frequency ranges and needs individual planning and setup. To a large degree this is indeed supported by multi switches using different amplification, slope, etc. for the two frequency ranges. However, the actual distribution topology, cable lengths and number of users have a great influence on the way any individual distribution network is to be designed and projected. This normally differs from installation to installation and cannot and should not be taken lightly. As the RF frequency range ( MHz) is normally used for analogue PAL distribution the requirements in terms of standards and regulation (IMD, C/N, etc.) are of high importance and can easily be the cause of severe distribution problems if not taken into account. In fact, the RF part of a multi switch distribution network should be projected and setup just as any other normal flat SMATV distribution network. Basically the same applies to the IF range, but the requirements are not as strict and the digital distribution methods normally used here makes it easier to do a straight forward setup. Page 117 of 144

119 DC sourcing of multi switches Except for the TMS 5xP, TMS 9xP and TMP Series (typically used for smaller stand-alone installations), all Triax multi switches are designed for external Power Supply. All units allow DC pass through in various directions This allows the installer to place the Power Supply (or a TMS5xP / TMS 9xP) at a position where Mains Power is already available, and s/he is not forced to run new Mains cables to a remote and difficult accessible position of the building. (Of course this statement is only true in the event that a Mains outlet is actually easily available somewhere along the distribution trunk!) Different power supplies exist for different TMS Series and they may even be combined across product series to a large extent, if needed. The TMS 5xP and TMS9xP Series multi switches have their own built-in power supply. In larger systems, one or two of these units can supply the rest of the system minimizing the need for extra external power supplies. When planning the DC supply of a Triax multi switch installation there are a few important factors to be aware of: Avoid drawing more than approximately 500 ma through any F-connector. For the same reason, NEVER install or work on an installation when power is ON. A normal and potent power supply will be able to source 2-3 Amperes over a shorter period of time. So if you accidentally make a short circuit, this may burn and damage many components before you see the smoke! When adding amplifiers beware that you add sufficient power supply resources too. Don t make the mistake of taking the PSU can be placed anywhere -feature too far. DC voltages drop over long cables due to the DC resistance of the copper cable, and this may need to be taken into account. 14VDC and 18VDC levels are critical for many components in the system. Use common sense (and Ohm s Law: U = R x I). Even if many multi switches will work drawing all its power resources for LNBs from the attached SetTopBoxes (STB), DO NOT DO IT! The STB with the highest DC voltage will win the DC source race, and source everything until it s power supply burns. Then the next STB will take over. Only when all users wonder why their STB does not work anymore, the full system will fail to work. So always make sure you have sufficient external power supply resources in your system. (A STB should only provide switching DC power or an absolute maximum of 300 ma ). REMEMBER: Your system is only as good as the weakest link. If you save on power supplies you run the risk of shutting down all users with one stroke! Page 119 of 144

126 Fig 11. One single TMS 17-PSU sources the multi switches and the LNBs via the Power IN connector at the lower right corner. NOTE The general rule for powering a TMS 17x system is always to use the Power IN connector to power the switches and LNBs. Depending upon the total power budget of a system, Line amplifiers (as TMS 17 AMP) should have their own Power Supply. Either directly via their Power IN connector, OR via an extra cable in the system running over the Power LINK connectors in the units. If this is used, the Power Link cable only needs to be present from the Power Supply position, and to the TMS 17 AMP to be sourced. Page 126 of 144

127 Terrestrial / RF output for TMS 9xC Series: Issue: Some users have mistakenly concluded that the RF / terrestrial signals are missing on the outputs from the TMS 9x4C, TMS 9x6C, TMS 9x8C, TMS 9x12C & TMS 9x16C. The symptom can be seen if you don t have any receiver connected to the switch or no power supply connected to the switch via the trunk. In other words there is no power going into the switch from any source. Issue is not related to the IF distribution. Reason: There is a terrestrial amplifier in the switch to compensate for the loss of the signal tapped out to the subscriber outputs, if this amplifier is not powered, it will create a tremendous loss resulting in totally blocking the terrestrial / RF signal out on the subscriber outputs. Solution 1: Have at least one (1) receiver (or more) connected to any of the outputs on each switch with power to the LNB output set to ON at all times, even in standby. This will also activate the terrestrial / RF amplifier and enable the signal to all outputs. Page 127 of 144

128 Solution 2: Use 1 x PSU 5 powering both up and down for the SAT B ports anywhere in the trunk. Powering of the terrestrial / RF amplifier is accepted both at the in- and output of the trunk line for the switch. This will feed power to the terrestrial / RF amplifier in all switches both over and below the power supply. Page 128 of 144

129 Solution 3: Use a power inserter and a power supply on the last switch connected to the SAT B Vertical Low Band line. This will feed the terrestrial / RF amplifier in all switches above. It will also power the SAT B LNB. Solution 4 (Recommended) Terminate the trunk line with a TMS 9x4, TMS 9x6, TMS 9x8, TMS 9x12 or TMS 9x16 (standalone switch) which has a built in power supply which will also feed all switches above and activate the terrestrial / RF amplifier. 131 Satellites and polarities In the early days of satellite transmission it was clear that the relatively narrow frequency range available for transmission would cause problems. With a narrow bandwidth on each transponder, you can only have so many transponders crammed into the frequency range allocated for satellite reception (initially 10.7 GHz to 11.7 GHz = Low Band, and later also 11.7 GHz to GHz = High Band). Consequently it was early decided to transmit from a satellite using both a vertical polarized transmitter antenna, and a horizontally oriented antenna. This makes it possible to practically use the same frequencies twice, one on each polarity (in real life a small frequency shift is actually used, so that the centre-frequencies are slightly shifted on horizontal and vertical transponders. This makes the risk for crosstalk between the two transponders even smaller). Low Band - High Band H V Fig. 1: Example of Horizontal and Vertical transponder frequencies on a European ASTRA satellite. In Europe the number of channels grew pretty rapidly, and so the need for more and more frequencies became higher and higher. The original frequency range used for the first analogue transmissions from e.g. the ASTRA satellite was 10.7 GHz to 11.7 GHz. This was later extended with another GHz into 11.7GHz to GHz and was called the High-Band Range. Consequently the original frequency range was called the Low Band Range. Today, using both analogue and digital transmissions, both frequency ranges are in use, and are normally being received via a universal LNB, that can receive any one of the 4 polarities available, and make them available on the coax cable, one at a time. In the United States, India, Australia, New Zealand, well pretty much everywhere outside of Europe, 2 polarity satellites are still being used. The frequency range in use there are often 12.2 GHz to 12.7 GHz. Latin America also uses 2 polarities at: GHz to 12.2 GHz. After reception of the signal from the satellite, using an LNB, the LNB performs a block down-conversion of the high frequencies from the satellite into a frequency range that can be transmitted in normal coax cables. This frequency range, called the IF range, (Intermedium Frequencies) starts at 950 MHz, and extends, depending upon satellite, Low/High range and LNB-type up to 2150 MHz. This signal is sent from the LNB via a coax cable to the tuner input of the satellite receiver, or into a multi switch, from where the correct polarity can be selected by a satellite receiver. 133 A practical approach to multi switch installations Multi switches provide an elegant, simple to implement solution for distribution of DTH signals, from a set of shared DTH dish antennae and LNBs In this chapter we will take a closer and practical look at how to install a multi switch system. Using examples and calculations we will find out what needs to be taken into account when a multi switch system is planned and installed. Avoid common pitfalls A limited number of channels are available for reception using normal CATV and SMATV networks and RF distribution in the VHF and UHF frequency ranges. Typically, some 90 channels are possible using RF distribution. Next step to achieve more channels is using QAM transmodulators. If even more channels are needed, or users cannot agree upon a common set of channels, a multi switch installation is a good solution as it provides a vast number of channels and freedom to choose (Fig. 1). FIG. 1: Technology - Number of channels versus number of subscribers As outlined in a previous article, a multi switch system requires a substantially higher number of cable runs. The signals distributed also occupy a larger, higher, frequency range (IF range: MHz) than is used for normal SMATV RF distribution, and consequently there are several issues that need to be taken into account, that may not be obvious when only distributing RF signals (up to 862 MHz). As in normal CATV and SMATV distribution networks there are pitfalls to avoid when planning and installing multi switch systems. In the following we will try to identify the pitfalls, so that you can easily steer around them, and get a safe and problem free installation. Page 133 of 144

134 One of the most common pitfalls is when you approach a multi switch installation the same way you would approach a normal SMATV installation. This may lead to design decisions that will prove difficult to live with in practical installations, and may even lead to designs that are impossible to implement. Examples are for instance using a star-topology where a trunktopology should be used, and using short trunk-runs and long subscriber lines, where the opposite is normally recommended (Fig. 2). Fig. 2: Star-topology versus trunk-topology Obviously, physical issues need to be taken into consideration. But sometimes, if you are not aware of the technical requirements around a multi switch, it is very easy to let building constraints, walls, small risers and other limitations on the physical side of a building totally decide how your multi switch system is designed. On the other hand, looking blindly on the theory of projecting a multi switch system you may end up in a conclusion that it is impossible to do an installation in that particular building or area. Normally, the truth lies somewhere in between, and with a good knowledge of what makes a multi switch work, and what does not, you are in a good position to make the correct decisions and, if needed, suitable compromises, that will result in working systems. All too often important decisions are already taken before an installer is given the task of doing the projecting, calculation, of the system. This is one very good reason why it is very important that multi switch knowledge is available at a very early stage. Otherwise crucial decisions may be taken early and be impossible to change later. When you have read this article, you may find yourself overwhelmed at first by the number of issues to take into account. It is indeed a bit frightening when you think of the many possibilities for introducing problems if you don t get it right. On the other hand, when you master this (and it is not as difficult as it may sound at first notice) you ll be able to serve dozens, maybe even hundreds, of happy users in a single successful installation. Page 134 of 144

135 Don t make compromises at the dish/antenna First rule of projecting says that you should never make compromises at the signal input stage. In a multi switch system this normally means the dish and the LNBs. The investment in high performance dishes and LNBs is very limited when you look at the total investment for the whole installation. Often it is necessary to run the signals that are received at the dish via the LNB, through a very long cable, until it reaches the end subscriber. As it is described later, compensating for cable losses can be very expensive, not only in terms of investment, but more importantly also in terms of degraded signal performance. For that reason, it is absolutely vital that you project your multi switch outdoor unit(s) for maximum performance and maximum signal level and quality out of the dish and LNB. Only use one dish per orbital position. Never use a multiblock / monoblock setup, as it is a physical compromise resulting in a lower signal level and a poorer C/N ratio from each position. Always use a dish size as large as possible. The signal level you gain here is basically free, compared to what you may need to amplify later. Only limit here is the maximum allowed level at the input stage of the first multi switch in a system (and the maximum input level of a set-top box). As multi switches normally have an active output stage, you must be careful not to overload this amplifier. Such problems can normally be handled by using a TAP-cascade at this position with a higher tap-loss than further down the distribution, rather than lowering the output level from the dish (using a smaller dish). The higher output level is probably needed further down the distribution network, and should not be thrown away lightly (Fig 3). LNB output (dbm) = Footprint EIRP (dbw) + 30 Path loss (db) + Antenna Gain (db) + LNB Gain (db) Assumptions: Path loss = 206 db (at 12,45 GHz) Antenna gain = 34,0, 36,5 and 40,7 db (antenna sizes 46, 60 and 100 cm) Typical footprint = 51 dbw Typical LNB Gain = 56 db Example: = -35 dbm (73,75 dbµv) Fig. 3: Link budget Always do symmetrical designs Second rule of projecting stipulates that you should always try to keep the distribution network balanced and symmetrical. In a very high building, say over 8 storeys high, this would normally mean that you should start at the top from the dishe(s), go half way down through the building, and then split upwards and downwards from there. Dependent upon the number of floors, you may even want to split out once more. (Fig. 4.) Page 135 of 144

136 Fig. 4: Split for more risers, or many floors In a multi switch installation cable costs often account for up to half of the investment, and the fact that on some of the upper floors you would have to have a trunk going up, and a trunk going down, is often disregarded already at the drawing board simply because it is a lot of cables. At first glance, it also seems an easy way to cut system implementation costs to focus on minimizing total cable length. But you have to be aware that at the high IF frequencies used for multi switch distribution ( MHz) the cable losses are substantially higher than at normal SMATV RF distribution, and it can be very expensive to compensate for this by having to include line amplifiers in the trunk (Fig. 5). Fig. 5: Typical cable loss per 100 m. cable Even if a component to component calculation proves that it is much cheaper just to include another line amplifier, you have to be aware that any active device, such as an amplifier, adds intermodulation and that it may ruin your C/N (carrier to noise) ratio, and thereby your signal, if you are not very careful. Page 136 of 144

137 Often you ll find that it is impossible to gain back what you have lost in terms of cable loss, even using very high grade amplifiers, and that a better, thicker, cable will take you far longer than any amplifier. This leads to the next rule: Always use thickest possible cable in the trunk, and thinner at subscriber As described above, as losses along the cable accumulate, at some point it will be necessary to amplify the signal to maintain the levels required for perfect reception. However, inserting amplifiers also adds to the intermodulation and has an effect on C/N. These are entities that cannot and should not be taken lightly. If you design without taking them into account, you may end up with a signal level that seems OK (from a level point of view), but produces nothing but problems, macro-blocking and drop-outs at the set-top box. As cascading amplifiers are the most common cause of intermodulation and a bad C/N ratio, the solution is to avoid having an amplifier as far as it is possible and as few cascaded amplifiers as possible. The only way to minimize a large cable loss (without introducing intermodulation and reducing C/N) is to use a better, often thicker, cable. This costs money, yes. But it will also buy you a longer cable run. Something you may not be able to buy by adding another line amplifier later. From the multi switch and to the outlet socket of the subscriber you can normally use a thinner cable. Avoid using push-on/quick-connectors in the installation. They have greater loss and generally a poor long time performance. Keep long cable runs in the trunk, not in subscriber cables This rule is an extension of the previous rule, and is especially true the longer cable runs you have. It is sometimes perceived as practical to have all the multi switches in one close physical location, with short trunk lines between them, and then having all the subscriber lines as a star-topology from there. But remember, the multi switch is often an active device, which means that there are limits to how much level you can input to it. If both satellite and terrestrial signals are to be distributed, this becomes even more critical. The problem here is that if you have very long subscriber cables, the cable loss alone may require you to have a very high signal level into the multi switch, just to compensate for the cable loss. On top of that, in the case of more than one orbital position, where you will need to use 22 khz for switching purposes, and maybe even DiSEqC control commands on top of the 22 khz in case of even more positions, you have not only the cable loss from the multi switch to the receiver to take care of, but also the loss and degradation of the 22 khz signal when travelling from the receiver back to the set-top box. Therefore the general rule of thumb is: Have your long cable runs in the trunk (using thick cable) and short cable runs from the multi switch to the subscriber outlet (if possible, using a thinner cable) Always carefully adjust the output level of lineamplifiers As already described above, if you must insert line amplifiers, and for many systems there are no way around it, then make sure you get your math right, and adjust the line amplifiers to the correct output level. NEVER just set it for maximum output level! This means that you HAVE to calculate the actual needed amplification for every stage of your system, and you HAVE to be able to measure the level at installation to be able to Page 137 of 144

138 adjust it to the correct level. In most cases, doing the adjustments by ear will absolutely not work, and will probably come back to haunt you later. When you calculate the level of line amplifiers, you must remember this: The maximum input level of an amplifier is normally given as a figure like this: 105 dbµv (IM3), and is understood to be a maximum level measured with two channels only. To get the correct level however, you must compensate for the fact, that the IF range you receive has a large number of channels (transponders). Whether you intend to use them or not doesn t matter. They are there and they will all be amplified and actually degrade the performance of your line amplifier. Or to put it another way: The more transponders you have, the lower level you can input to the amplifier, to avoid intermodulation (Fig. 6). RF: Reduction factor = 7,5 x log(number of channels -1) SAT: Reduction factor = 10 x log(number of channels -1) Example (SAT): 10 x log(30 transponders -1) = 14,6 This means that an amplifier specified as 105 dbµv (IM3), can only be sourced a maximum signal of ,6 = 90,4 dbµv without compromising intermodulation and C/N. Fig. 6: Correct maximum level versus data sheet specification. You should know that the reduction factors are imperial values. This means that they are not the result of an exact science, but approximated over time and through trial and error. This means that there is some leverage in this calculation. It is just downright impossible to say how much as many factors have an influence (transponders on/off, different number per polarity, quality of signal, signal variations, weather condition, etc.). But it does mean that you may experience situations where you can get away with higher levels than calculated or use cheaper components and cables. The real problem here is, that when one or more users get problems later you have no way of finding out why, if you didn t do your homework correctly in the first place! See the multi switch as a combiner in terms of terrestrial and satellite signals It is a general misconception that RF and IF are to be distributed equally using multi switches. Cases are known where trunk cables are drawn fully identically for both the RF signals (cable/terrestrial signals) and the IF (multi switch signals). This is very often not a good solution. In most cases, the number of channels, cable losses, C/N ratios and signal levels are completely different in RF distribution, and thus it is necessary to project and lay them out individually. The fact that most multi switches have terrestrial inputs should only be seen as a simple means of combining the two signal sources just before the subscriber cable and the subscriber outlet. Page 138 of 144

139 Many subscriber outputs do not always mean many outputs per switch It often seems practical or natural, to use multi switches with as many outputs as possible. If you have, say, 8 users on a floor, the first choice would normally be to use an 8-output multi switch on that floor. Or a 16-output unit for two floors. In many cases this is indeed OK, but there may also be good reasons why you should split the outputs out amongst more, smaller, units. For instance using 4 units with 4 outputs each. Why? Because if the size of the building forces you to run subscriber cables from one single physical position (from the 16-output multi switch) it will result in very long cables for some of the outlets, you may find this a violation of one of the previous rules. Or, in other words: If using one single unit means running excessively long subscriber cables, you should break it up into smaller units, and let the trunk take care of the distances (Fig. 7). Fig. 7: One or more floors per unit Be part of the decision-making-team from an early stage If you are an installer who will have to project, calculate and offer a multi switch installation, it is a good idea to try and educate all those individuals that come into play at a very early stage of new multi switch installations. In new buildings this normally means architects, planners, administrators and engineers. They often have little background to understand the important factors that govern a working multi switch system, and may decide things that make life miserable for you later. As, for instance, the physical position of the headend, the dishes, the cabling and the outlets. Normally no one wants to look at a dish, so it is often put far away in a remote corner of the roof of the building. But the most economical place, both in terms of real money, and also in terms of signal resources and distribution, would be in the middle of the building or complex. Not to speak of the fact that dishes must have free view towards the position of the satellites (in Europe degrees over the horizon due south). The latter is a requirement that cannot be compromised, whereas others can, to some degree. Also the cabling is not necessarily straightforward, and therefore it is important that at some places in the trunk there is enough physical space to run the necessary number of cables Page 139 of 144
