1 Extremely high sensitivity Live Video Imaging using the SamBa SE-34 A special thanks for the cooperation and support from Coreco Imaging in enabling this feature. Introduction This document provides guidance in setting up the Sensovation SamBa SE-34 for live digital and/or analog video imaging. The SE-34 is used together with the Coreco BanditII Digital framegrabber whigh has direct RGB and Composite Video Outputs. Together this is a very cost effective system which gives the following benefits: BENEFITS Ultra high sensitivity of the Charge Multiplying CCD (aka CCM, EMCCD, SPD ) Stable Live Video frame rates 30 frames/second Video recording, High Quality 10-bit Digital Video, Composite Video (analog) or both simultaneously. Bridges the gap from Analog to Digital. Live video display on RGB monitor or TV Video Monitor. The SamBa SE-34 delivers ultra-high quality images at 30 fps, 12-bit digital resolution. This digital data is sent to the BanditII framegrabber. The BanditII provides two independent display outputs. The primary display is used as the system VGA to display live video on the Windows desktop. The live display does not utilize any CPU or PCI bandwidth. The secondary display output can be configured to display live image with overlay or duplicate the contents of the primary display with zero CPU usage and PCI bus bandwidth. As shown here the secondary output is formatted as composite video for a TV monitor. SamBa SE-34 Charge Multiplied CCD BanditII Framegrabber VGA Monitor TV Monitor or Video Recorder In general the system operates as follows: The SamBa SE-34 must be programmed with the desired parameters such as exposure time, and then given the command to start acquiring. (This is done via Text commands over Ethernet or RS-232, either using Sensovation s SamBa Control demo application). The BanditII demo software BanditII Pro Demo provided by Coreco can be used to display the live image on the VGA monitor, as well as to enable the composite video output. The next step would be to integrate the control of SamBa SE-34 and BanditII into your specific application program. 3 CAUTION: STATIC SENSITIVE COMPONENTS When handling the exposed electronics of the framegrabber, static electricity can damage electronic components. Please discharge any static electrical charge by touching a grounded surface, such as the metal computer chassis, before performing any hardware installation. When in doubt, please consult a qualified computer technician. Never remove or install any hardware component with the computer power on. Installation Step 1: SamBa SE-34 Demo Software Install the SamBa Control demo software provided on CD according to instructions in the manual provided by Sensovation. After this installation, you will be able to program and control the SamBa SE-34. Image display is also possible, using Ethernet as the data link (note however that Ethernet will not be able to display at video rates). Since the SamBa Control demo does not support the BanditII at this time, the Coreco demo software must be used for setting up the BanditII as well as video display. Step 2: Coreco Sapera Library Installation (Refer to your current Coreco Documentation the following is provided for reference) The Sapera Development Library (or runtime library only when application development is not required) needs to be installed before the Bandit-II device driver. Installation requires Administrator rights for the current user of the computer. Insert the Coreco Imaging Sapera CD-ROM. If autorun is enabled on your computer the Coreco Imaging installation menu is presented. If autorun is not enabled, use Windows Explorer and browse to the root directory of the CDROM. Execute launch.exe to install the required Sapera components. The installation program will prompt you to reboot the computer. BanditII Display Configuration: Use the BanditII as the System VGA. This implies that your monitor will be connected to the primary VGA output of the BanditII. Step 3: BanditII Framegrabber Hardware Installation Install the Coreco BanditII Framegrabber according to the user manual provided by Coreco: While Windows is running, change the VGA driver to Standard VGA. Power down and open the computer chassis to allow access to the expansion slot area. Remove the existing PCI VGA board if there is one installed. Note that some computers have the VGA hardware built into the computer main board but support the installation of a PCI VGA board for upgrading the VGA system. Review your computer documentation for any required system BIOS settings that may need to be modified. 3= info@sensovation.com

4 Install the Bandit-II board into a free PCI expansion slot. The secondary VGA connector bracket requires a second slot. Connect your VGA display monitor to the VGA output connector (J4) on the Bandit-II. Connect the LVDS data cable from the SamBa SE-34 to the BanditII Digital Input connector (68 pin connector). Connect the Video coax cable from the BanditII secondary output (4-pin DIN connector on the secondary VGA bracket) to the monitor or video recorder. Close the computer chassis and turn the computer on. 5 Step 3: Coreco BanditII Device Driver Installation Install the Coreco BanditII Driver as instructed in the Coreco Manual. Display Properties Setting The screen resolution has to be (1024 by 768) or (800 by 600). Ensure that that the Analog Composite Video cable (CV) is connected to a monitor. 7 Creating a camera file A camera file for the SamBa SE-34 is required by the Coreco software for the BanditII. Sensovation has created this file using the Camera Expert software tool provided by Coreco. This camera file titled SamBaSE34.cvi along with SamBaSE34.cca can be simply saved in the directory path>\coreco\banditii\camfiles\. (The default path for the installation of the BanditII software is c:\ ). If you wish to create the camera file yourself, the following screen shots document how this can be done using the Camera Expert tool: Camera Expert Setting 7= info@sensovation.com

9 Before clicking OK, be sure that Bandit II Pro and Camera Expert programs are closed. Enabling the conversion of 10-bit Digital data to 8-bit YUV: 1. Open the.cvi file in a text editor. 2. Near the end of the file, change the value of the parameter Output Format to Save the.cvi file. 9= info@sensovation.com

10 Starting the SamBa SE-34 Image Acquisition SamBa Control demo program can be used to communicate with the SamBa SE-34, to set the exposure time, and for starting and stopping the image acquisition. Launch the SamBa Control Application. The following screen appears. Ensure that all settings for the acquisition parameters are as shown below.: Ensure that the selected area of interest is the full CCD resolution 656 x 496 by clicking on the button. Setting up Communications with the SE-34 Click on the icon for the Setup Tools. The following screen will appear. As shown Ethernet is selected as the Camera Control Port. RS-232 can also be used just as well. Refer to the SE-34 Manual for further details. Note that this program is not used for image display In the Setup, select none for the Image Data Acquisition Port. 10= info@sensovation.com

11 Click on USE to complete the setup and close this window. Note the following for the Acquisition Settings: Integration time is set very low (in this case, 20 microseconds negligible compared to the 33ms video rate), since this time is in addition to the 33ms readout time of the CCD. Therefore a video rate close to 30 fps is achieved. Preclear is not enabled. This allows the CCD to expose the next frame during the 33ms readout time of the current frame. In this way, almost 100% light collection efficiency is achieved. Other default settings are: CCD Temperature: regulated to a setpoint of 20 C Idle Time: Gain: Acquisition: 0 ms (this is the time between frames, which can be used to adjust frame rate. Note however that without the Preclear set, this time is additional exposure time). 1 (electronic amplifier gain) Continuously Start acquisition by clicking on the Start/Stop Acquisition button. When the SamBa SE-34 is acquiring, this icon will change to framegrabber.. The SamBa SE-34 will be sending frames with resolution 656x496 at 30 fps to the 11= info@sensovation.com

12 Displaying live Video Run the BanditII Pro Demo program. Bandit II Pro Settings: Select Live Video, Use Secondary,and then click on Grab in order to display the video. The live video will also be available at the Composite Video output. 12=

13 Camera-Framegrabber Cable Definition The SE-34 is connected to the BanditII digital framegrabber via the industry standard AIA/ANSI (Automated Imaging Association) LVDS parallel interface. A video cable (coax 75 ohm) is necessary, and is normally connected to J3 DIN connector. A standard S-Video plug (4-Pin DIN) will suffice to connect the Composite Video. A standard BNC to RCA adapter may be required to connect to your video monitor or video recorder. OTHER MODELS OF THE BANDITII FRAMEGRABBER In some variants of the BanditII framegrabber, the J3 connector is not installed.
