7 Chapter 1 Product Overview Agilis, a global leader in the design, development and manufacturing of quality satellite products for various applications, introduces the Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver (AFOT Series). The Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver also offers a wide range of distinctive advantages and enhanced features for satellite communication systems. The Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver comes in an indoor and an outdoor package. It is designed for voice and data applications with stringent performance specifications This user manual provides detailed information to system integrators and end users on how to set-up, operate and maintain the Fiber Optic Transceiver. 1.1 About The Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver The Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver (AFOT Series) is a high performance and reliable indoor and outdoor subsystem which performs the function of converting L-Band input into Fiber Optic signal, converting digital signal into Fiber Optic signal on both transmit and receive. The fiber optic link is able to support the distance of 5km from the control room to the hub with very low insertion loss. The robust design of the AFOT Series Transceiver allows for easy installation and configuration. AFOT TRANSMIT AND RECEIVE IN ONE UNIT/ HOUSING The complete Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver (AFOT) Fiber Optic Transceiver system is composed of two similar AFOT Series units. It consists of the complete Up and Down links with Unit A and Unit B. Each AFOT consists of a transmitter and a receiver. The L-band RF input signal fed into the transmitter board of Unit A. The transmitter board converts it to fiber optic signal. This signal is transmitted through fiber optic cable; the cable can be as long as 5km. The fiber optic signal is received by the receiver board of Unit B. This receiver board converts the fiber optic signal to L-band RF signal and sends it out through the RF Out port. In each unit, there is a digital transceiver board, which can convert the digital signal fed from Ethernet to fiber optic signal, and transmit or receive it through fiber optic cable. AFOT WITH DISEQC CONSOLE The AFOT system that includes DiSEqC console is composed of two AFOT units: one transmitter unit and one receiver unit. The L-band RF input signal fed into the transmitter board of Unit A. The transmitter board converts it to fiber optic signal. This signal is transmitted through fiber optic cable; the cable can be as long as 5km. The fiber optic signal is IM Rev.B 1

8 Chapter 1 Product Overview received by the receiver board of Unit B. This receiver board converts the fiber optic signal to L-band RF signal and sends it out through the RF Out port. The following images show the internal component diagram for the AFOT series. 9 Chapter 1 Product Overview 1.2 Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver Functions The Fiber Optic Transceiver may comprise any of the following components: TX Board RX Board The TX board converts the L-band signal to fiber optic signal (1310nm). The fiber optic signal is more than 0dBm. This signal is fed to 1310/1550 WDM coupler. The RX board takes in the fiber optic signal (1310nm) from the other WDM coupler and converts it to L-band signal Digital Transceiver Board /1550 WDM coupler This transceiver board consists of two sections: the transmitter section can convert the digital signal to 1550nm fiber optic signal. This signal is more than -10dBm. And the receiver section can convert the 1550nm fiber optic signal to digital signal. This board supports data-rate of 155Mbps and transmission distance 80km. The 1550nm fiber optic signal from transmitter section is fed to the WDM coupler with the other 1310nm fiber optic signal from the TX board. And the receiver section takes in the 1550nm fiber optic signal from the WDM coupler with the other 1310nm fiber optic signal from the RX board. There are two WDM couplers. One is for transmitter side; the other is for receiver side. The coupler in transmitter side is coupling the 1310nm optic signal from TX board and 1550nm fiber optic signal from transceiver board, and sends out through FC/APC connector. This coupler has 30dB isolation between 1310nm and 1550nm signals. The coupler in receiver side split the input signal of 1310nm and 1550nm to RX board and transceiver board Power Supply DiSEqC The power supply board includes AC/DC converter, DC/DC converter, and provides voltage of 5V. The Digital Satellite Equipment Control (DiSEqC) is available in the AFOT04N52 product model (Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver with DiSEqC console). The DiSEqC Console port supports RJ45 connection that directly communicates with an indoor terminal such as a PC. The DiSEqC protocol in the AFOT specifically controls the Voltage Level and 22kHz Tone parameters. By using the M&C interface, the user can monitor and control these parameters. IM Rev. B 3

10 Chapter 1 Product Overview Monitor and Control The M&C module is the central processing hub of the AFOT. It is developed on an embedded microcontroller to perform the required monitoring and control functions. The unit can be connected to a remote PC via serial communication using RS485 or through Ethernet (SNMP and Web). Using the M&C module, you can: Control the AFOT network and operation configurations Configure the Voltage level (13VDC or 18VDC) Enable/Disable Tone (22 khz) Check LNB alarm status Configure the LNB current limit Monitor the device status (LNB current level, Voltage level, Tone, DC operation, and REF operation) Detect the AFOT network parameters using the Agilis Device Discovery Tool IM Rev.B 4

Tx LED When the TX board send fiber optic signal out, the Tx LED will be on (green). Rx LED When the RX board receive fiber optic signal, the Rx LED will be on (green). Note: In an AFOT-Transmit unit, the Rx LED never turns on and is always off. Note: In an AFOT-Receive unit, the Tx LED turns On (Green) whenever transmit process is ongoing and the Rx LED turns On (Green) during receive operations. The same principle occurs with an AFOT unit that has both transmit and receive functions. IM Rev.B 6

When pin 1 of DB9 connector drop to below 1V, there will be an alarm. ETHERNET RJ45 Connector Ethernet 10/100BST signal is fed into this connector. This port can both transmit and receive Ethernet signals. DiSEqC Console RJ45 Connector Connects to the M&C interface to control the Voltage Level and Tone parameters. IM Rev. B 7

15 Chapter 1 Product Overview Outdoor AFOT Front View All port connectors on the rear panels of the Outdoor Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver are sealed to prevent air and moisture from entering the unit and causing damage to the internal components. Voltage of Pin A will be higher than +2.5V in No Alarm condition. Pin B is the ground pin, voltage will be 0V. ETHERNET RJ45 Ethernet 10/100BST signal is fed into this connector. This port can both transmit and receive Ethernet signals. POWER LED When there is AC power supply, the Power LED will be on. RX LED When the RX board receive fiber optic signal, the Rx LED will be on. TX LED When the TX board send fiber optic signal out, the Tx LED will be on. IM Rev. B 9

OPTIC HMA Connector This connector includes both the input and output of fiber optic signal. The signal can be transmitted through this port to a long distance. 19 Chapter 1 Product Overview 1.5 System Components This section explains the various system components, aside from the Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver unit, that is required to setup the entire system Transient Protection Box for the Outdoor AFOT Transient protection prevents spikes in electrical discharges that may cause damage to the Agilis equipment or other connected components. Figure 1.11 Transient Protection Box For the TPB to work effectively, please keep clean outgoing lines away from the incoming or earth leads. Note: Ground the TPB by connecting the M6 Earth Stud to a grounding rod. Note that this is vital to the proper operation of the TPB. IM Rev. B 13

21 Chapter 2 System Configuration The Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver can be deployed in indoor and outdoor systems. This chapter explains the cable connections needed to deploy the various AFOT product models. 2.1 AFOT with DiSEqC The AFOT Transmit and AFOT Receive (with DiSEqC) units can be configured in indoor environment. The cable connections required for this setup is defined in the following cabling diagram. 23 Chapter 2 Installation 2.2 AFOT Transmit and Receive The AFOT01F50 includes both transmit and receive functions in one unit and is configured in either outdoor environment. The indoor version is AFOT01F50-RM. The cable connections required for this setup is defined in the following cabling diagram. 25 Chapter 3 Installation This chapter explains a step-by-step process to safely mount and install your Agilis product. WARNING: Always handle the Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver with care. Dropping or knocking it may cause damage to the unit. Agilis warranty does not extend to defects due to excessive shock or vibration. 3.1 Unpacking the Box Before unpacking the box, check if it had been damaged or opened. If the shipment may have been tempered with, open the box in front of a representative from the shipping company. Upon opening the box, carefully remove the items in the package and check them against the packing list. If any of the items are damaged or missing, please contact Agilis or your local Agilis representative before proceeding. We recommend that you keep the original packing materials until you have completed the checks and confirmed that the unit is in working order. If you need to repack the product for shipping, please use the original shipping container and packing materials whenever possible. 26 Chapter 2 Installation 3.2 Pre-Installation Preparations The Indoor Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver is designed to be mounted in a standard 19 rack or a standard slide rail. Please ensure that there is sufficient space between the IDU and other equipment on the rack so that airflow to the fans is not obstructed. We highly recommend having the following tools on hand before starting the installation: 1 set of socket wrench 1 Phillips head screwdriver 1 cutter 1 bag of cable ties (Long and medium) 1 multimeter Power Supply The AFOT requires a 230V AC power source on site. When selecting the AC power source to connect your unit to, please be aware of the following voltage tolerance limitations. You are recommended to use an Automatic Voltage Regulator if your power source falls outside of these limitations. 27 Chapter 2 Installation 3.3 Installing the Indoor Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver The physical installation of this system includes mounting the AFOT in a standard 19 rack and making the necessary cable connection between all equipment in the system. The installation procedures are given in the steps indicated below: Note: Gains Testing can be performed prior to deploying the units on different site. Refer to Section Gains Testing for the gains testing procedure. Step 1 Mounting the Indoor Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver (AFOT) To mount on a standard 19 rack, position the AFOT horizontally on the rack, taking care to leave ample space for unrestricted airflow throughout the unit. Please refer to the section appropriate for your AFOT system. INDOOR AFOT WITH DISEQC CONSOLE The Indoor AFOT with the DiSEqC console provides the transmit functions while the receive functions are provided by a separate Indoor AFOT. Both AFOT units are connected to each other using fiber optic cable. On the Downlink side, connect the RF cable from an IDU (modem) to the TRANSMITTER RF IN port of Unit B (at site B) and connect the RF cable from the IDU (modem) to the RECEIVER RF OUT port of Unit A (at site A). On the Downlink side, connect the TRANSMITTER OPTIC port of Unit B (at site B) to the RECEIVER OPTIC port of Unit A (at site A) using a single mode fiber optic cable (5km max distance). 5. Connect the AFOTs to a 230V AC power supply using the AC power cables (P/N: G). Step 3 Grounding the installation This process provides a conductive path for static electrical charges to be discharged safely from the equipment to the ground. Step 4 Switch on the units Turn on the AC power source. The Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver (AFOT) should power on and the Power LED indicator should be lighted. The table below provides how to check your unit if the Power LED does not turn On (green). 31 Chapter 4 Setup and Management 4.1 Monitor & Control Agilis devices can be monitored and controlled remotely via the following methods: HTTP/ Web interface Agilis Device Discovery Tool Single Network Management Protocol (SNMP) This chapter looks at how you can set up and manage your Agilis Optic Fiber Transceiver (AFOT). Before using the HTTP/ Web interface, it is required to know the network configuration of the Agilis device such as the Device IP, Subnet Mask, and among others. To know these information, you need the Agilis Device Discovery Tool. The Agilis Device Discovery Tool enables the user to know and detect the network configurations in the Fiber Optic Transceiver such as IP Address, Device Type, MAC address, Subnet Mask, Gateway. This software is useful if the network configuration parameters are unknown to the user. MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Windows XP/ Windows 7 operating system.net Framework 2.0 At least 50MB hard disk free space An M&C Ethernet interface INSTALLING THE AGILIS DEVICE DISCOVERY TOOL The Agilis Discovery Tool must be installed into a PC terminal. To install the Agilis Device Discovery Tool, perform these steps: Step 1 If an installation CD was included in your package, please insert the CD into your PC s disc drive. DISCOVER AGILIS DEVICES USING THE AGILIS DISCOVERY TOOL To discover the network parameters of the Agilis device, perform these steps: 1. From the display table of the Agilis Discovery Tool user interface, click the row that corresponds to the AFOT device. 2. Type the new values on the corresponding text field of the parameter you want to edit. In this example, the IP address is changed from into Click the [Set] button. To monitor and control the AFOT using the WEB interface via an Ethernet connection, connect your PC LAN port to the AFOT RJ45 port using a standard RJ45 cable. Step 1 Setup a static IP address for your LAN connection. 1. Navigate to your LAN connection properties. If you are using Windows 7, this is located in the Network and Sharing Center window. If you are using any other Windows system, please navigate to the Network Connections window. Both windows can be accessed via your PC s Control Panel. 2. Click the network connection corresponding to the Ethernet port that the AFOT is connected to and open the Properties window. 3. Scroll to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option and click the [Properties] button. This will open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties dialog window. IM Rev. B 30

Here, select Use the following IP address and configure as follows: IP Address: xx Subnet mask: xxx.x Caution: Use the network parameters that are retrieved using the Agilis Device Discovery Tool. This ensures that the appropriate Device IP and Subnet Mask are used to connect the PC to the Agilis device. Figure 4.9 Configuring static IP 5. Click [OK] and exit the both properties windows. Step 2 Activate your web browser. The AFOT s HTTP module is designed to work in any standard web browser such as the Microsoft Internet Explorer. Note: The following steps use the Internet Explorer as an example. If you are using any other web browser, please adjust the menu selections accordingly. IM Rev. B 31

38 Chapter 3 Maintenance & Troubleshooting Step 3 Disable proxy server on the web browser. 1. Select Tools > Internet Options from your menu bar. 2. Click the Connections tab. Figure 4.11 AFOT s web configuration interface The Welcome page displays basic information about the AFOT that are categorized in three panels: DEVICE INFORMATION The Device Information panel displays the AFOT s part number, serial number, and firmware version are defined. INTERFACE INFORMATION This panel lists details about the interface communication between the PC and the AFOT such as Device IP, DHCP, Device ID, Device Gateway, and Device Subnet Mask. DEVICE STATUS This panel describes the current status of the AFOT components such as LNB current, Voltage Level, Tone, DC Operation, and REF operation. This screen automatically refreshes every 500ms to provide an updated summary of the AFOT s status. You can also click Refresh Status at the bottom of the screen to manually refresh the page. IM Rev. Figure 4.12 AFOT Device Alarm screen The Device Alarm screen displays the alarm status of the LNB. Each alarm can display one of four colour states. Green: Indicates that there is no alarm for the corresponding status. Red: Indicates a major alarm. Corrective action should be taken immediately. Amber: Indicates a minor alarm. Correction action should be taken if necessary. Grey: Indicates that this status is not applicable for the AFOT being monitored. Click Device Configuration and the login window will appear. Enter the login name and password and click [OK] to enter the configuration screen. The factory default login name and password is admin and admin respectively. Note: Both the Device Configuration and SNMP Configuration screens can only be accessed after logging in. Access to both screens is maintained after logging in until the browser is closed. 42 Chapter 3 Maintenance & Troubleshooting NETWORK CONFIGURATION The Network Configuration panel allows you to configure the AFOT network connection by modifying various parameters such as Device ID, DHCP, Device IP (Static), Device Subnet Mask, and Device Gateway. OPERATION The Device Operation panel allows you to configure the AFOT operating parameters such as the Voltage Level (13VDC or 18 VDC), 22 khz Tone, and the LNB Current Limit. The table below provides the available options for the AFOT operations: Parameter Available Options Description Voltage Tone LNB Current Limit (ma) 0V 13V 18V Enable Disable Up to 200mA DC Output for LNB via the RF_IN port 22KHz output tone for LNB via RF_IN port Major Alarm occurs when LNB current is more than ±25% off the threshold EXAMPLE: MODIFY THE LNB CURRENT LIMIT The Device Configuration screen provides options that can be chosen from their dropdown menu, textboxes, or checkbox. The following procedure is an example on how to edit the LNB Current Limit parameter using the textbox. To change the LNB Current Limit value, perform these steps: 1. 45 Chapter 3 Maintenance & Troubleshooting 4.3 Monitor & Control via SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) provides a framework for the definition of management information and the exchange of that information. A SNMP manager is a software module that manages part or all of the system configurations while an agent is a software module in the unit that is being managed. Transfer of information can be initiated by both the manager (via polling) and the agent (via SNMP Trap). By default, the manager initiates requests and receives responses via port 161. The agent sends SNMP Trap messages via port 162. A database describing the unit s application parameters is stored in the SNMP agent. This SNMP Management Information Base (MIB) database is used to interpret the signals requested and received between the manager and agent. The database includes both a standard set of values common to hardware nodes on a network and a private set of values that is unique to the specific unit. Object Identifiers (OID) are a series of numbers that uniquely identify variable to an SNMP agent. OIDs are arranged in a hierarchical tree structure. The figure below shows the categorization of AFOT parameters that are used in defining the MIBs for SNMP enabled Agilis products. Note: This figure shows the full set of categories and does not apply to all Agilis products. The set of parameters that are available in each Agilis product will differ. Connect your PC LAN port to the AFOT RJ45 port using a standard Ethernet cable. Step 1 Activate your SNMP manager. Agilis products will work with most standard SNMP managers available in the market. Note: For the purpose of this manual, all screenshots in this section are made using the SNMP Manager from ireasoning. You can download or purchase any standard third party SNMP Manager software and install it into your PC. Step 2 In the SNMP manager, enter the AFOT s access IP address. The following show the default configuration: Agent IP: Subnet Mask: SNMP Manager: Step 3 Insert the CD included in your package into your PC s disc drive and load the MIB definition file ( AGILIS-PROD-XXX-MIB.mib ) into your SNMP manager. 48 Chapter 3 Maintenance & Troubleshooting Each item in the tree is called a node. A parent or root node can be expanded into branches. You can view each branch by clicking the +/- icons in the tree. Each branch eventually terminates at leaf nodes. To search for a specific node within a branch, right-click on the parent node of that branch and select Search and type the name of the node to search for. You can expand or collapse the entire tree or branch by right-clicking on the parent node and selecting the Expand subtree or Collapse subtree option. UNDERSTANDING SNMP OPERATIONS The full set of SNMP commands that can be initiated from the SNMP manager is explained in the table below. To execute a command on any node in the tree, simply select the node and right-click. From the menu that appears, select the command to execute. Note that not all commands are available for every object in the tree. 53 Chapter 5 Maintenance This chapter details various system maintenance operations to help ensure that your system works under optimal conditions. WARNING: Disconnect all power sources before performing any system maintenance and repair. 5.1 Preventive Maintenance This section explains the various maintenance checks that should be routinely carried out to ensure that the system is working correctly and in optimal condition. Ideally, you should perform a complete maintenance on the system at least twice a year and record all updates and changes made to each IDU SETUP RECORD. Notify all users that may be affected of a system down time of roughly two hours prior to maintenance. WARNING: Disconnect and re-connect cables during maintenance properly to avoid causing any damage to the cables that may result in intermittent problems in the future Gains Testing The gains testing procedure in this section can also be performed prior to installing the entire system. This will ensure that the units are working properly prior to system deployment. Refer to Appendix B Unit Specifications to verify if the AFOT is operating within the specified limits. Step 1 Connect the system as shown on the Connecting the Indoor Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver (AFOT). Step 2 Check that the transmit and receive configurations on both the modem and the Agilis Fiber Optic Transceiver complies with the SETUP RECORD.
