This chapter also introduces what the Q-Lab software is and what it does as well as the practical application of the Q-Lab software. 8 Conventions Used in This Manual This manual has several standard conventions for presenting information. Connections, menus, menu options, and user entered text and commands appear in bold. Section names, web and addresses appear in italics. Note: A note is information that will be of assistance to you related to the current step or procedure. CAUTION: A caution alerts you to any condition that could cause a mechanical failure or potential loss of data. WARNING: A warning alerts you to any condition that could cause personal injury. 8

9 2. Introduction & Installation 2 Overview The Q-Lab software is used to establish network communication between a PC or Laptop computer and the 8821Q-R Spectrum Analyzer and manage all data, tests, and test results. Features The Q-Lab software can be used to perform the following tasks: Communicate with and remotely control the 8821Q-R Create, edit, upload, and download Channel Test Plans Create, download and review bitmap images of screen captures Transfer and save test results Update the firmware of the 8821Q-R Spectrum Analyzer System Requirements Once you have made sure that your system meets the following minimum requirements, you re ready to install the Q-Lab software. Pentium-II or upward compatible CPU 64 MB RAM 10 MB free disk space for installation Greater than 300 MB free disk space for saving kinescope video files. If the Operating System of the PC or Laptop Computer is reserving space for other programs that are running, your minimum free space limit may be even higher for saving kinescope video files. Windows 2000, XP Professional, Windows 2003, or Vista Color monitor running at 256 colors or higher, 800 x 600 minimum screen resolution Windows-compatible mouse & keyboard Note: Be sure to check the USB Flash Drive for release notes that may affect the installation and configuration process! 9

10 Installation Instructions To install the Q-Lab software, perform the following steps: 1. Depending on the operating system you are installing the Q-Lab software on, you may need to log on as the local administrator. Note: Check with your network or systems administrator if you re not sure about your current login account permissions. 2. Insert the 8821Q-R USB Flash Drive into an available USB port on your PC or Laptop Computer. 3. Copy the folders and their contents to a new folder on your Desktop. 4. Open the new folder, select the Q-Lab Software folder, and then double-click the Q-Lab X.X.X.msi file. (Where X.X.X is the version number of the software.) 5. The Welcome to the Q-Lab Setup Wizard Window will appear, select the Next> Button to proceed to the next step of the installation wizard. Note: To cancel the installation of the Q-Lab software at any time during the installation, select the Cancel Button. 10

11 6. The Select Installation Folder Window will appear, select the Browse Button to choose the destination folder to install the Q-Lab software to. Select the Next> Button to start the software installation. 7. The Confirm Installation Window will appear. To proceed with the software installation, select the Next Button. To change any installation settings before installing the Q-Lab software, select the Back Button to go back to the previous setup screen. 11

12 8. The Installing Q-Lab Window will appear momentarily to indicate the status of the software installation. 9. The Installation Complete Window will appear. Select the Close Button to exit. The Q-Lab software is now installed. Note: Once you have installed the Q-Lab software, it is recommended that you make a copy of the files and folders and store them in a backup location. 12

13 3. Connecting to the 8821Q-R 3 Overview Perform the steps outlined in each of the following sections to; Run the Q-Lab Software for the first time. Connect to the 8821Q-R through a LAN connection. Setup your default file locations. Network Connection Setup The Q-Lab software allows you to connect to an 8821Q-R to retrieve files as well as remotely control the 8821Q-R. Before you can connect to an 8821Q-R, you must perform the steps outlined within the following sections. Requirements The following requirements must be met to obtain a successful LAN connection; 1. You must first connect the PC or Laptop Computer to the 8821Q-R using either of the following methods; Using an RJ-45 Network cross-over cable (included with 8821Q-R) for direct connection to the PC or Laptop Computer. Using an RJ-45 Network cable (included with 8821Q-R) for connection through a router or network switch. 2. Your PC or Laptop Computer must be on the same network and subnet as the 8821Q-R. Keep this in mind when setting the IP Address of the 8821Q-R in Step 3. Otherwise, you may have to change the network settings on your PC or Laptop, thus limiting your network or Internet connectivity. 3. Your 8821Q-R must have an IP Address assigned to it using the information shown in Section I: The Basics, Chapter 4: System Configuration, Communications Settings of the 8821Q-R Operation Manual. 13

14 Starting the Q-Lab Software Double-click the Q-Lab the Q-Lab Software; Icon on your Desktop or perform the following steps to start 1. Select the Start Button and hover over the All Programs Menu Item. 2. Select the Q-Lab Folder. 3. Select the Q-Lab Icon to start the software. Selecting Your Network The first time Q-Lab is run, the Select NetWork Window will appear. Perform the following steps to select your network; 1. Highlight the IP address of the network in which your PC or Laptop Computer is connected to. 2. Select the OK Button. Note: To change your network at any time; from the Instrument Connect Window, you may select the LAN button. Note: If you are having problems connecting to an 8821Q-R and have recently switched from using an RJ-45 Network cross-over cable with a fixed IP address to using an RJ-45 Network cable with an IP Address automatically assigned through a network router or switch; you may need to change your network. 14

15 Manually Connecting to an 8821Q-R Once you have selected your network (during initial setup) or whenever you select the Connect Instrument Button, the Connect Instrument Window will appear. To manually enter the IP Address of the 8821Q-R, perform the following steps; 1. If you know the IP Address of the 8821Q-R that you wish to connect to, enter the value in the Network Address field. 2. Once you have entered your device s IP Address, select the OK Button to connect to your 8821Q-R. Note: If you DO NOT know the IP Address of the 8821Q-R, skip to the next section for instructions on how to search for any devices that are connected to your network. Note: If the IP Address shown above the OK Button is not the same as the IP Address currently assigned to your PC or Laptop Computer, you will need to set the current network by selecting the Lan Button. 15

16 Searching for an 8821Q-R on Your Network If you do not have access to or for some other reason you cannot manually enter the IP Address of the 8821Q-R, perform the following steps to search for any 8821Q-R on your network. 1. From the Connect Instrument Window, select the Search Button. 2. The Search Instrument Window will appear. The network information will appear in the first three octets of the Start IP and Stop IP fields with the last octets begin the lowest and highest addresses on the network. To start the device search, select the Start Button. Note: For the Q-Lab Software to find your 8821Q-R, the device must be turned on and connected to the network before selecting the OK Button. 16

17 3. If there is an 8821Q-R connected to the same network as the PC or Laptop Computer, the device will be shown as in the graphic to the right. 4. To connect to the 8821Q-R, right-click on the IP Address of the 8821Q-R and select Connect Instrument from the right-click menu. 5. You will now return to the Connect Instrument Window, the IP Address of the selected 8821Q-R will appear. 6. Select the OK Button to connect to your 8821Q-R 17

18 Q-Lab Software Option Settings Before using the Q-Lab software for the first time you must select how to display the sound frequency within a channel test plan and set the default file locations for the following types of files; Screen Shots, Kinescope Videos, DTV Statistics, and Limit Setting. Select Tools, Option from the Command Menu or press the Options Button to change the Q-Lab software options settings. The Instrument Option Window will open as shown below. Channel Test Plan Options The Show sound by absolute value check box is used to select how the sound frequency is displayed within the channel test plan as follows: When the check box IS selected the channel test plan will display the absolute value of the sound carrier frequency. When the check box IS NOT selected the channel test plan will display the relative value of the sound frequency to the carrier frequency. Choosing File Location To change the default file location for saved files; Select the button to the right of each field. The Browse for Folder Window will open, navigate to the following directory; C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\my Documents\Q-Lab\BMP. This directory location is used as a suggestion only, the operation of the Q-Lab software is not affected by the location for saving files. Select the OK Button. 18

19 8821Q-R Network Device Management If you need to add, delete, or make changes to the Names or IP Address of any 8821Q-R, perform the following steps; 1. From the Connect Instrument or Connect Manager Window, select the Lan Manager Button. 2. The Lan Manager Window will appear. 3. From within this window you can perform the following actions; Add New Devices - Select the Add Button to add a new device to the list shown within the Lan Manager Window and then use your keyboard to enter a new Device Name and IP Address. Delete Existing Devices - Highlight the device you wish to delete and select the Remove Button. Modifying Devices - Double-click the Device Name or the IP Address of the device that you wish to modify and use your keyboard to enter a new Device Name and/or IP Address. 19

20 4. Guided Tour 4 Overview Once you have installed the Q-Lab software, you re ready to learn your way around. The following image is a typical example of the Q-Lab work environment Command Menu - This area contains the commands to minimize, maximize and exit the program as well as access several other software features as shown in the Command Menu section of this chapter. 2. Toolbar - This area is used to access each software feature as shown in the Toolbar section of this chapter. 3. Connect Manager Window - This window is used to manage LAN connections to the 8821Q-R. For more information about this window, see Chapter 3: Connecting to the 8821Q-R, Network Connection Setup. 20

21 4. Peak Marker Window - This window is used to enable, disable, and set the type of peak marker. For more information about this window, see Chapter 5: Remote Control Mode Basics, Marker Settings, Peak Marker Control. 5. Measurement Limits - This window is used to set measurement limits. This window is only available when you are in Spectrum Analyzer Mode. For more information about this window, see Chapter 7: Spectrum Analyzer Remote Control Mode, Measurement Limit Settings. 6. Marker Table Window - This window is used to view and export the current marker table. This window is only available when you are in Spectrum Analyzer Mode. For more information about this Window, see Chapter 5: Remote Control Mode Basics, Marker Settings, Marker Table. 7. Live Display Window - This window is used to monitor the live display of the 8821Q-R in which you are connected. You are also able to choose whether you want to view the Spectrum Analyzer Mode, CATV Measurement Mode, or DTV Measurement Mode. For more information about this Window, see Chapter 7: Spectrum Analyzer Remote Control Mode, Chapter 8: CATV Analyzer Remote Control Mode, or Chapter 9: DTV Analyzer Remote Control Mode. 8. Remote Control Window - This window is used to control the 8821Q-R measurement parameters for all measurement modes. This window is only functional when connected to a device and you are viewing the live display of the 8821Q-R. For more information about this Window, see Chapter 7: Spectrum Analyzer Remote Control Mode, Chapter 8: CATV Analyzer Remote Control Mode, or Chapter 9: DTV Analyzer Remote Control Mode. 21

22 Command Menu The Command Menu has five basic main menus, as described in the following table. Menu File View Tools Record Viewer Help Commands Setup Print Settings, Preview Print Jobs, Print Jobs, and Exit the Q-Lab software program. Show or hide the Toolbar, Status Bar, Connect Manager Window, Peak Marker WIndow, and Remote Control Window. Access the Connect Instrument, Channel Test Plan Editor, Show Picture, FCC Report, Firmware Update, and Options features. Open and view saved screen shots, kinescope videos, and DTV statistics files. View the current software version of the Q-Lab software. File Menu When you select File from the Command Menu, you will be able to choose from the following settings. Command Print Print Preview Print Setting Exit Description Print Channel Test Plans and FCC Reports. For more information about printing, see Chapter 6: File Management Basics, Printing Channel Test Plans & Test Reports. Preview Channel Test Plans and FCC Reports before printing. For more information about printing, see Chapter 6: File Management Basics, Printing Channel Test Plans & Test Reports. Change default printer and printer settings. For more information about printing, see Chapter 6: File Management Basics, Printing Channel Test Plans & Test Reports. Exit the Q-Lab software program. 22

23 View Menu When you select View from the Command Menu, you will be able to choose from the following settings. Command Toolbar Status Bar Lan Watch Marker Control Description Select this option to view the Toolbar. For more information, see the Toolbar section of this chapter Select this option to view the Status Bar. Select this option to view the Connect Manager Window. For more information about this window, see Chapter 3: Connecting to the 8821Q-R, Network Connection Setup. Select this option to view the Peak Marker Window. For more information about this window, see Chapter 5: Remote Control Mode Basics, Marker Settings, Peak Marker Control. Select this option to view the Remote Control Window. For more information about this Window, see Chapter 5: Remote Control Mode Basics. 23

24 Tools Menu When you select Tools from the Command Menu, you will be able to choose from the following settings. Command Connect Instrument Channel Test Plan Editor Show Picture FCC Report Update Instrument Option Description Select this option to open the Connect Instrument Window to change the connection settings that the Q-Lab software uses to connect to the 8821Q-R Spectrum Analyzer. For more information about this window, see Chapter 3: Connecting to the 8821Q-R, Network Connection Setup. Select this option to open the Channel Editor Window to create, edit, upload, and download television channel plans. For more information about this window, see Chapter 6: File Management Basics, Managing Channel Test Plans. Select this option to open the Show BMP Window to upload and browse BMP screen captures made using the 8821Q-R Spectrum Analyzer. For more information about this window, see Chapter 6: File Management Basics, Managing Bitmap Images. Select this option to open the FCC Report Viewer Window to upload and browse test reports made using the 8821Q-R Spectrum Analyzer. For more information about this window, see Chapter 6: File Management Basics, Managing Test Reports. This option is not available through Q-Lab at this time. See Section I: The Basics, Chapter 6: Software & Firmware Updates in the 8821Q-R Spectrum Analyzer Operation Manual. Select this option to open the Instrument Option Window to change the way that the Q-Lab software displays the sound signal of channels in the channel test plans. 25 Record Viewer Menu When you select Record Viewer from the Command Menu, you will be able to choose from the following settings. Command Open Saved Wave Open Saved Kinescope Open Saved DTV Stat Open Saved Old DTV Stat Description Select this option to open the Wave File Window to view saved wave files. For more information, see Chapter 5: Remote Control Mode Basics, Live Display Spectrum Snapshots, Opening a Live Display Snapshot. Select this option to open the Kinescope File Window to view saved kinescope video files. For more information, see Chapter 5: Remote Control Mode Basics, Live Display Spectrum Recording, Opening a Live Display Spectrum Recording. Select this option to open the Stat File Window to view saved DTV statistic files. For more information, see Chapter 9: DTV Analyzer Remote Control Mode, Selecting DTV Measurement Modes, Statistic Graph. Select this option to open the Statistic Window to view saved DTV statistic files. This option is only compatable with early pre-release "BETA" versions of the 8821Q-R. For more information, see Chapter 9: DTV Analyzer Remote Control Mode, Selecting DTV Measurement Modes, Statistic Graph. Help Menu When you select Help from the Command Menu, you will be able to choose from the following settings. 26 Toolbar Icons The Q-Lab software toolbar provides a way to access a number of commands and features as shown in the following table; Icon Description Connect Instrument - Use this button to open the Connect Instrument Window to change the connection settings that the Q-Lab Software uses to connect to the 8821Q-R Spectrum Analyzer. For more information about this button, see Chapter 3: Connecting to the 8821Q-R, Network Connection Setup. Channel Test Plan Edit - Use this button to open the Channel Editor Window to create, edit, upload, and download television channel test plans. For more information about this button, see Chapter 6: File Management Basics, Managing Channel Test Plans. Show Picture - Use this button to open the Show BMP Window to upload and browse BMP screen captures made using the 8821Q-R Spectrum Analyzer. For more information about this button, see Chapter 6: File Management Basics, Managing Bitmap Images. Test Report - Use this button to open the FCC Report Viewer Window to upload and browse test reports made using the 8821Q-R Spectrum Analyzer. For more information about this button, see Chapter 6: File Management Basics, Managing Test Reports. NOT USED Print - Use this button to print a Channel Test Plan or Test Report. This button is only available when a Channel Test Plan or Test Report is open. For more information about this button, see Chapter 6: File Management Basics, Printing Channel Test Plans & Test Reports. 26

27 Icon Description BMP Snapshot - Use this button to take a BMP Snapshot of the current spectrum analyzer display. This button is only available when the 8821Q-R is being remote controlled by the Q-Lab Software. For more information about this button, see Chapter 6: File Management Basics, Managing BMP Images, Taking a BMP Snapshot in Q-Lab. Connect Manager - Use this button to open and close the Connect Manager Window. Peak Marker - Use this button to open and close the Peak Marker Window. Remote Control - Use this button to open and close the Remote Control Window. Limit Settings - Use this button to open and close the Limit Settings Window. This button is only available when the 8821Q-R is being remote controlled by the Q-Lab Software. For more information about this button, see Chapter 7: Spectrum Analyzer Remote Control Mode, Measurement Limit Settings. Options - Use this button to open the Instrument Option Window to change the way that the Q-Lab Software options. For more information about this button, see Chapter 3: Connecting to the 8821Q-R, Q-Lab Software Option Settings. Help - Use this button to view the current software version of Q-Lab. 27

28 5. Remote Control Mode Basics 5 Overview The Q-Lab Software allows you remotely control the 8821Q-R through a LAN Connection. Using the Q-Lab Software allows perform all of the same measurements that you would normally do from the front panel of the 8821Q-R. Note: Before attempting remotely control the 8821Q-R, you must first successfully complete the steps that are outlined within Chapter 3: Connecting to the 8821Q-R, Network Connection Setup. Opening a Remote Connection To connect to the remotely control the 8821Q-R using Q-Lab, perform the following steps; 1. From within the Connection Manager Window, highlight the IP address of the 8821Q-R that you are connected to. 2. Double-Click the IP Address of the 8821Q-R. 3. The Live Display Window will appear. By default, the Live Display Window will start in the Spectrum Analyzer Mode. 4. To change measurement modes, select the CATV, DTV, or Spectrum Radio Button in the lower right corner of the Live Display Window. Note: For more detailed information about the controls shown within the Live Display Window, see the specific measurement mode chapters that appear later in this Operation Manual. 28

29 Live Display Spectrum Snapshots The Q-Lab Software allows you to take a snapshot of the Live Display Window. The Live Display Spectrum Snapshot also saves the accompanying measurement data and allows you to set markers within the saved snapshot. This allows the user to view a saved measurement at any time in the future without losing the ability to analyze specific data points within the waveform. Note: These settings apply to the Spectrum Analyzer and CATV Measurement Modes only. Taking a Live Display Spectrum Snapshot To take a Live Display Spectrum Snapshot, perform the following steps; 1. From within the Live Display Window, select the Snapshot Button. 2. The Save As Window will appear. 3. Enter the path and file name of the snapshot and select the Save Button. 29

30 Opening a Live Display Spectrum Snapshot To open a Live Display Spectrum Snapshot that has been saved using Q-Lab, perform the following steps; 1. Select Record Viewer from the Command Menu. 2. Select Open Saved Wave from the dropdown list. 3. The Wave File Window appears. 4. Select the Wave File Button. 5. The Open Window will appear. 6. Enter the path and file name of the snapshot and select the Open Button. 7. The Live Display Spectrum Snapshot will appear in the Wave File Window. 8. Once you have opened a Live Display Spectrum Snapshot, you can toggle between the Live Display Spectrum Snapshots that are saved in the same directory by using the or Button. 9. 31 Live Display Spectrum Recording The Q-Lab Software allows you to record the Live Display Window over time. The Live Spectrum Recording also saves the accompanying measurement data and allows you to set markers within the saved spectrum recording. This allows the user to view a saved measurement at any time in the future without losing the ability to analyze specific data points within the waveform. Note: These settings apply to the Spectrum Analyzer and CATV Measurement Modes only. Recording a Live Display Spectrum To record a Live Display Spectrum, perform the following steps; 1. From within the Live Display Window, select the Record Button. 2. Once you are ready to stop recording the Live Display Spectrum, select the Stop Button. 3. The Save As Window will appear. 4. Enter the path and file name of the spectrum recording and select the Save Button. 31

Select Open Saved Kinescope from the drop-down list. 3. The Kinescope File Window appears. 4. Select the Open KC Button. 5. The Open Window will appear. 6. Enter the path and file name of the spectrum recording and select the Open Button. 7. The Live Display Spectrum Recording will appear in the Kinescope File Window. 32

33 Spectrum Recording Playback Controls Once you have opened a Live Display Spectrum Recording, you can perform one of the following actions; You can Play, Pause, and Stop the video file. You can pause and step through the recording frame-by-frame using the or Button. You can adjust the playback speed by selecting the appropriate value from the drop-down list in the lower right corner of the Kinescope File Window. You can add MAX Hold trace by selecting the check box in the lower right corner of the Kinescope File Window. The wave shown on the screen will display the largest signal value after a comparison with the live trace. You can add MIN Hold trace by selecting the check box in the lower right corner of the Kinescope File Window. The wave shown on the screen will display the smallest signal value after a comparison with the live trace. Once you have opened a Live Display Spectrum Recording, you can add markers and use the marker table. For more information about using markers, see the Marker Settings section of this chapter. 33

34 Marker Settings The Q-Lab Software allows you to set up to eight (8) markers at any location within the Spectrum Analyzer Display. The amplitude and frequency of the corresponding marker is displayed in the lower right corner of the Live Display Window as shown in the following image. Note: These settings apply to the Spectrum Analyzer and CATV Measurement Modes only. Adding & Moving Markers To add and move a marker, perform the following steps; 1. Highlight the marker number that you would like to add. 2. Double-click the marker number. 3. A marker with that number will appear. 4. To move the marker, click and hold your mouse button on the marker in the display and move your mouse either left or right. 5. Once you have placed the marker in the area of interest, release the mouse button. 34

35 Peak Marker Control To enable the peak marker function, perform the following steps; Note: These settings apply to the Spectrum Analyzer and CATV Measurement Modes only. 1. Select the Peak Marker Button from the Toolbar. 2. The Peak Marker Window will appear. 3. Select from one of the following options when setting the peak marker. N Peak Button - Searches for the peak value that is lower than the one that is marked. L Peak Button - Searches for the next peak value on the left side of the current marker. R Peak Button - Searches for the next peak value on the right side of the current marker. Peak Tab Button - Searches for 8 peaks and sorts them by amplitude (highest to lowest). Close All Button - Closes all peak makers. 4. The amplitude value and frequency of the selected peak marker is shown in the lower right corner of the Display Window. 35

36 Marker Table To open the Marker Table Window, perform the following steps; Note: These settings apply to the Spectrum Analyzer Measurement Mode only. 1. Select the Peak Marker Button to the right of the Marker Measurement Area. 2. The Marker Table Window will appear. 3. Select the Export to Excel Button to open the Save As Window and simply enter the path and file name of the peak marker file and select the Save Button. Note: Selecting the Max or Min Check-boxes will enable a maximum or minimum measurement at each marker and the corresponding values will be shown in the Marker Table Window. 36

37 Delta Marker To perform the delta marker function from the Marker Table Window, perform the following steps; 1. Add at least two markers by using the steps outlined in Adding & Moving Markers. 2. Once the markers have been displayed in the Marker Table Window, click and hold the Normal Value of the desired marker. 3. Drag the Normal Value of the desired marker to the Marker 1 or Marker 2 field of the Delta Marker Table. 4. When done making changes, select the OK Button to save the changes. To discard any changes or exit without saving, select the Cancel Button. 44

If you wish to change the limits, perform the following actions; Highlight the limit that you wish to change Use your keyboard to enter the new value. 4. To change the Amplitude Units of the Test Report Limits, select the down arrow next to the dropdown box and highlight the new units. 5. Select the OK Button to save the Test Report Limits. 6. The Save Window will appear. 7. Select the Yes button to save the changes and use the new Test Report Limits or select the No button to return to the Report Limit Set Window without changing the Test Report Limits. 55

56 Printing Channel Test Plans & Test Reports The print feature is used to print Channel Test Plans and Test Reports. To perform the following functions, a Channel Test Plan or Test Report must be opened. Print Setup To setup the default printer and printer preferences select File, Print Settings from the Command Menu. Note: The printer settings will vary depending on which system that the Q-Lab software is installed on. Check with your network or system administrator if you are not sure about your current printer settings. Choose from the following options to setup your printer; Select the down arrow next to the Name: field to select the active printer. Select the Properties button to setup the properties of the printer. Select the down arrow next to the Size: field to select the paper size. Select the down arrow next to the Source: field to select the paper source. Select the Portrait or Landscape radio button to select the orientation of the page. Select the OK button to save your print settings. Select the Cancel button to exit without saving your print settings. 56

57 Print Preview To preview a print job before sending to the printer, select File, Print Preview from the Command Menu. The Print Setup Window appears. Before printing, choose from the following options to preview your print job; Select the Next Page or Prev Page button to scroll through the pages of the document. Select the Zoom In or Zoom Out button to view the whole page or details on the page. Select the Print button to print the document. Select the Close button to close the window without printing. 57

58 Printing To send a print job to the printer, either select the Print Command Menu. The Print Window appears. Button or File, Print from the Before printing, choose from the following options to customize your print job; Select the down arrow next to the Name: field to select the active printer. Select the Properties button to setup the properties of the printer. Select the All radio button to print all pages or select the Pages radio button and enter the range or pages to print. Enter the number of copies to print in the Number of copies field. Select the OK button to send the document to the printer. Select the Cancel button to cancel the print job. 58

Enable and disable the limit and/or set the frequency units by selecting an option from a dropdown list. 4. When you have finished making changes, select the Apply Button. Wave Limit To edit your wave limit settings, perform the following steps. 1. Select the Max and/or Min Check-boxes. 2. Use your keyboard to enter numeric values in the corresponding field. 3. When you have finished making changes, select the Apply Button. 4. The Limit Waves will appear in the Live Display Window in orange for Max and pink for Min. 5. 71 Channel Measurements If you wish to perform any of the following measurements for the selected channel use the instructions provided below for each type of test; FM Deviation - Use your keyboard to enter the Cycles and select the Set Button. Hum - Select the Hum Button. Depth of Modulation - Select the DepthMod Button. Leakage - Select the Leakage Button. Cross Modulation - Select the CrossMod Button. Carrier Level & Frequency - Select the Carrier Button. Carrier-to-Composite Noise - To perform a test with automatic noise bandwidth, select the Auto Radio Button and then select the CCN Button. To perform a test with a manual noise bandwidth, select the Manual Radio Button, use you keyboard to enter the value between 1 MHz and 4.5 MHz, select the Set Button, and then select the CCN Button. CSO/CTB - Select the CSO/CTB Button. To measure an adjacent channel select the Next Peak, Next Ch, or Last Ch Button. CLDI - Select either FCC or NTC7 test standard from the drop-down list and then select the CLDI Button. Differential Gain / Differential Phase - Select either FCC or NTC7 test standard from the drop-down list and then select the DG/DP Button. In-Channel Response - Select the resolution bandwidth and test signal type from the drop-down lists and then select the Response Button. 71

72 Test Report Measurements If you wish to perform a test report measurements use the instructions provided below; Start & Stop Measurements - Select the Start or Stop Button. Scheduling Measurements - Select the By Time Button to schedule your test at a specific date and time. The System Meas Time Window will appear. Select the date from the drop-down list and then enter the time by highlighting the hours, minutes, or seconds and enter the time using your keyboard or up/down arrows. Select Number of Cycles - Select the Cycle Button and the Cycle Set Window will appear. Use your keyboard to enter the number of cycles and then select the OK Button. Send Test Set Information - Select the Send Set Button and the Note Window will appear. Use your keyboard to enter the Operator, Location, Test Name, and Note to the connected 8821Q-R and then select the OK Button. 72

73 Channel Scan Measurements If you wish to perform a channel scan measurement use the instructions provided below; Standard / Digital / Analog Channel Scan - Select the corresponding button to start the desired test. Channel Scan Limit - Select the Limit Button and the Channel Scan Limit Window will appear. Use your keyboard to enter the limit and then select the OK Button. Favorite Channel Scan - Select the Favorite Set Button and the Fav Channel Set Window will appear. Select the Load Button to load the selected Channel Test Plan. Select the check box next to each channel you wish to add as a favorite and then select the OK Button. To perform a favorite channel scan measurement, select the Favorite Button. 73

74 9. DTV Analyzer Remote Control Mode 9 Overview The DTV Analyzer Measurement Mode is accessed by selecting the DTV Radio Button from within the Live Display Window. When in this mode, the DTV Tab within the Remote Control Window will be enabled for control as shown in the following image. Note: Before accessing the DTV Analyzer Measurement Mode, you must first create a network connection with the 8821Q-R and have the Live Display Window open. 76 Constellation Settings I & Q Grid - Select the Grid Checkbox to display the I & Q Grid. Measurement Template - Select the Template Checkbox to display the measurement template. Constellation Display Mode - Select the Continues, Cyclic, or Time Filter Button to select the constellation display mode. Displayed Symbols - When in Cyclic or Time Filter Display Mode, use your keyboard to enter the number of display points and then select the Set Button. DTV Measurement Settings Channel / Frequency Selection - To tune by channel or frequency, select the corresponding radio button, use you keyboard to enter the channel number or frequency, select the frequency units (frequency tuning only), and then select the Set Button. Symbol Rate - Use your keyboard to enter the symbol rate and then select the M Button or select the A Button for automatic symbol rate selection. Attenuation - Use your keyboard to enter the attenuation and then select the M Button or select the A Button for automatic attenuation selection. Amplifier - Select the On, Off, or Auto Radio Button to set the state of he internal amplifier. Standard - Select the desired decoding standard from the drop-down list. Modulation Mode - Select the desired modulation mode from the drop-down list. Polarity - Select the desired signal polarity from the drop-down list. 76

77 Threshold Levels MER Th - Use your keyboard to enter the MER Th and then select the M Button or select the A Button for automatic threshold selection. BER-PRE Th - Use your keyboard to enter the BER-PRE Th, select the exponential measurement units from the drop-down list, and then select the M Button or select the A Button for automatic threshold selection. BER-POST Th - Use your keyboard to enter the BER-POST Th, select the exponential measurement units from the drop-down list, and then select the M Button or select the A Button for automatic threshold selection. 77

78 Selecting DTV Measurement Modes The DTV Analyzer includes three different measurement modes; Constellation Diagram, Statistic Graph, and Equalizer Display. These measurement modes can be accessed by selecting the Constell, Statistic, or Equal Button from within the Live Display Window as shown in the figure below. Within each of the viewing modes you can access the features that are shown in the following sections. Statistics Graph Equalizer Display Constellation Diagram 78

79 Constellation Diagram The Constellation Diagram is the default DTV Measurement Mode. The DTV Measurement Results will be displayed in the area to the right of the Constellation Diagram. From within the Live Display Window, you can perform the following actions; Use the Zoom In Button to zoom in on the selected grid area. Use the Zoom Out Button to zoom out from the selected grid area. Use the Left Button to move the zoom selection box to the left. Use the Right Button to move the zoom selection box to the right. 79

80 Statistics Graph The Statistics Graph records the history of Errored Seconds (ES), Severely Errored Seconds (SES), BER (Pre-FEC), and BER (Post-FEC) over a specified period of time. The Statistics Graph displays the average values below the graph as shown in the following diagram; From within the Statistic Window, you can perform the following actions; Set Time - Use your keyboard to enter the amount of time in which the statistics measurement will last and then select the Set Button. Starting & Stopping Measurements - Select the Start or Stop Stat Button. Opening a Statistic Graph - Select Record Viewer from the Command Menu and then select Open Saved DTV Stat from the drop-down list and the Stat File Window will appear. Select the Stat File Button, the Open Window will appear. Select the name of a statistics file that has been saved using Q-Lab and then select the Open Button. 80

81 Equalizer Display The default Equalizer Display includes three different measurement modes; Equalizer Coefficient Display, Frequency Response Display and Group Delay Display. These measurement modes can be accessed individually by selecting the EQU, Resp, Group, or Show All Button from within the Live Display Window as shown in the figures below. Show All Measurements Equalizer Coefficient Display Frequency Response Display Group Delay Display From within the Live Display Window, you can view the measurement data as well as turn off, freeze, unfreeze, or cycle the equalizer measurement mode by selecting the corresponding selection from the drop-down list in the lower left corner. 81
