DANE COUNTY TIMEBANK 2014 ANNUAL REPORT

DIRECTOR'S LETTER Hi! 2014 was another exciting year for the TimeBank. We continued our pilot project with Dane County Department of Human Services, focusing on integrating individuals with disabilities into the TimeBank in Sun Prairie. The TimeBank's Wellness Project continues to grow, and we have been working hard to help coordinate the Allied Community Cooperative, which gained official Coop status in Our Inclusion Project continues to be successful, and our Rural Dialysis Transportation project has seen tremendous growth this year, expanding to cover other much needed medical rides for members. Our Youth Court program continues to shine and the TimeBank continues to be a leader in applying youth and community led restorative justice. We continued our work to connect the Dane County TimeBank with functions of other alternative currency, in a deliberate step toward creating an integrated complementary economy. The new framework for this integrated system is called Mutual Aid Networks, where timebanking will be connected in an ecosystem with other cooperative economyand community-building tools such as cooperative saving/investment pools, price-based mutual credit, shared resources and cooperative ownership. The aim is to create opportunities for people to redesign our work lives to be more well-rounded, enriching, and satisfying by using a variety of means of compensation and community support. We held our first Sharefest event at Tenney Park. Lots of members came out to learn new skills and connect with each other. Our birthday party rocked at the Eastside Club, and we all had a great time dancing to VO5. We enjoyed numerous plant exchanges and other fun events. Our number of exchanges continue to grow each year, as does our number of organizational members.there was a whopping 15,545 hours in 2014, with everything from staffing a food pantry to giving an art lesson to teaching someone Spanish. As always, we couldn't do it without you. Thank you for all of your participation and continued support. We're all stronger because of it. Warmly, Lorrie Hurckes and Stephanie Rearick, Co-Directors

2014 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Members of the Dane County TimeBank Board bring a rich mixture of skills, resources, perspectives, and backgrounds to their tasks as directors. They represent our business, education, criminal justice, local government, and social service communities as well as everyday citizens and residents. The Board directs the activities of the Dane County TimeBank, overseeing operations and monitoring management of its programs. 4 NEIGHBOR TO NEIGHBOR TimeBank members are a caring and interconnected community of people who help each other by sharing our abilities, talents, and experiences. By both giving and receiving, we learn to appreciate the value of each and every member. We come to believe in the value of our own contributions. Instead of separating our community into those who need and those who provide, we recognize that we all have needs and gifts to share. When members provide a service for other members, one TimeBank Hour is earned for each hour spent providing the service. Members can then exchange each TimeBank Hour earned for an hour of service from someone else. With a focus on equality and community building, the TimeBank strives to encourage all members' strengths and involvement. TimeBank Member Coordinators take great care in matching individuals for the success and benefit of all involved in each exchange. We believe through these exchanges members build positive relationships and we broaden support networks within the community. Things that may not be accessible due to financial situations, insurance, qualifying factors, etc. become accessible to everyone through Timebanking. TimeBank members have access to many different services and resources such as: Help at home, Transportation, Companionship, Community activities, Wellness, Recreation, Education, Arts, crafts and music, Home repair, Business services, and more. Through the activity of TimeBank members, the TimeBank grows and provides an increasingly broad range of talents and skills to ensure we all have the help we need in many areas of our lives. I don't know how I could have possibly managed these past few months without the TimeBank and the wonderful people who are members. They have been invaluable, kind and diligent and are now good friends. To be honest, they are more like family. - Gail Scherer I have really enjoyed getting to know Hailey through the TimeBank. I have been able to go to the Madison museums with her, for coffee and she helped me with an art show. It really helped me to have new experiences. - Cindy Wegner

SPECIAL PROJECTS The TimeBank aims to address issues surrounding access to economic resources, juvenile and community justice, social and human services, transportation, and wellness, through special projects run by TimeBank staff and TimeBank members. Individual members and member organizations who offer services in these interest areas are organized and trained to participate in the following TimeBank projects. By coordinating these projects, the TimeBank is helping to: bring people together to work on social issues promote system change make a wider range of resources available value the work of all community members increase support networks engage disengaged youth make goods and services accessible practice restorative justice prevent young people from entering the juvenile justice system encourage leadership skills in teens promote positive, productive relationships provide goods in exchange for TimeBank Hours provide job skill development facilitate empowerment practice inclusion

SPECIAL PROJECTS TimeBank Youth Court The mission of the TimeBank Youth Court is to provide a positive alternative to the juvenile justice system so youth can willingly take responsibility for their actions, make amends and build healthy and productive relationships. Working with law enforcement, schools, and neighborhood groups; youth in the program can contribute to a safer, more caring community Inclusive Community The Dane County TimeBank is a place for all people to contribute time and talents and connect to the community - age, ability, ethnicity, and other experience enhance the rich fabric of our network. Instead of separating our community into those who need and those who provide, we recognize that we all have needs and that everyone has something to contribute. Every human being matters. Maxine's TimeBank Store Maxine's TimeBank Store is a place to exchange TimeBank Hours for new and gently-used clothing, toys, books, dishes, jewelry, home decor, equipment, supplies, and more. All are welcome to shop! Donations also welcome - please drop off your gently-used items to exchange for TimeBank credit. Allied Community Coop The Allied Community Coop is a project of Allied Wellness Center, Madison Apprenticeship Program, Allied-Dunns Marsh Neighborhood Association, Dunns Marsh Neighborhood Association, the Dane County TimeBank, Nehemiah Corporation, and residents of Madison's Allied Drive neighborhood. The coop is bringing together neighbors and organizations who work in the neighborhood to work together as partners in identifying and creating resources and activities that people want for their community. Medical Transportation Drivers for medical transportation help those people in need of rides for health related appointments access safe, affordable rides. Drivers receive TimeBank hours for their time driving and a modest stipend for gas. Currently, we are collaborating with WI Dialysis, St. Healthy Community Economy Since 2011, the Dane County TimeBank joining forces with Madison Hours has been evaluating how we can better apply cooperative economic tools to strengthen our local communities. We are currently working on ways to connect timebanking and mutual credit with other types of cooperative resource management to increase the effectiveness and sustainability of these systems, while building economic and social benefits for the community. Neighborhood Care Teams Neighborhood Care Teams gather the available resources in an area to help people meet their basic needs - such as assistance around the house, access to healthy food, help with transportation, companionship, and other basic services. We are increasing our capacity to connect neighbors with neighbors in a network of mutual support. In 2013, an initiative was begun in Sun Prairie and the surrounding area to build a model for Neighborhood Care Teams that can be used in other communities Wellness Project The Wellness Project is a collaborative effort of the Dane County TimeBank and community partners dedicated to providing opportunities to improve the health of our community through quality meals, companionship, information to enable healthy living, and access to essential services.

INCLUSION AND CAPACITY BUILDING NEIGHBORHOOD CARE TEAM PROJECTS The TimeBank continues to see tremendous growth in the scope of its work within the developmental disability community. The year began with 130 individuals in the county's developmental disability system as members of the TimeBank, and we saw that number grow to 142 people by the end of the year. In addition, there were 5 very active organizational members whose work is focused on helping people with developmental disabilities. These organizations exchanged hours of service. These 142 individuals engaged in hundreds of exchanges totaling over 1990 hours of service. Of these exchanges, 1125 (56.5%) were hours earned by providing service to others and 866 hours were exchanged (43.5% of total hours exchanged) by receiving help from other TimeBank members. The 5 organizations exchanged an additional 855 hours in their efforts to access resources for people they provide support to as well as to create opportunities for them to contribute to others in their community. The exchanges included a wide range of activities such as playing music, fitness partner, pantry help, cooking, dog walking, TimeBank board members, phone companion, creating art, family visits, thrift store help, knitting, book club, help at community and senior centers, bike repair, martial arts, and so much more. One of the organizations has even been paying TimeBank Hours to a church for someone who they support to be able to have space to create his artwork 10 hours a week. Most importantly however are the opportunities provided for individuals to be active and valued members of our community, and the opportunities created to develop relationships with other members of the community. We're looking forward to building upon this success to create more opportunities for everyone in our community to contribute as equal partners, and to be valued for who they are and what they have to contribute to the betterment of our entire community.

INCLUSION & CAPACITY BUILDING In 2008 the TimeBank received funding from Dane County Human Services to provide support for individuals with developmental disabilities in the community. In 2013 the TimeBank began a Capacity Building project in Sun Prairie, focusing on neighborhood care teams and support around families. There were 142 self identified participants in There were TimeBank Hours exchanged in Of these exchanges, (56.5%) hours were earned by providing service to other members and hours were exchanged through receiving services themselves (43.5% of total hours exchanged). In 2014, TimeBank 5 organizations exchanged hours supporting the inclusion project and its participants. TOTAL NUMBER OF HOURS EXCHANGED SELF-IDENTIFIED MEMBER PARTICIPANTS

RURAL DIALYSIS DRIVING / MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION 2014 The TimeBank receives funding through Dane County Department of Human Services to provide dialysis rides to individuals in rural communities. TimeBank members earn hours by driving people to and from their dialysis appointments. Some highlights for 2013 include: 19,000 miles driven for rural dialysis and medical transportation Average miles per ride = participating drivers 20 participating riders 600 rides provides Averaging 50 rides per month Lynn* is one of many people in our community with a family member receiving weekly dialysis treatments - a life-saving procedure that requires visiting the clinic three times a week - for some folks driving minutes to reach a treatment center in Dane County. When Lynn s mother began receiving treatment, family members pooled their time to provide rides for appointments scheduled Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday starting late morning and ending mid-afternoon, which required a lot of flexibility for family members (and sometimes their employers.) To help ease some of the stress, Lynn was referred by the social work staff at Wisconsin Dialysis to the Medical Transportation Program run through the Dane County TimeBank. We were able to find three drivers to help with those days and times most difficult for her family, and Lynn reports that having access to this resource is a huge relief and it makes the other days easier to handle for everybody. Lynn also mentioned the extra benefit for her mother, who lives in an assisted living facility, of having new people to talk to on the 20 minute trip to the dialysis treatment or back home. Described as an excellent conversationalist - Lynn s mother has found common interests with those who help get her to her appointments, making the time driving pleasant for everyone. Two of her drivers live in her community, and Lynn s mother is also able to see them at weekly church service, which she enjoys immensely. For Lynn s family, it is a great relief to have help with transportation, and all the extra benefits that come from being connected with caring members of her community.

YOUTH COURT MISSION: The Dane County TimeBank Youth Court involves community members of all ages in the process of applying restorative justice, addressing wrongs to the community, and helping young people succeed. ABOUT THE YOUTH COURT: Dane County teens who have been charged with ordinance violations such as habitual truancy, some drug possession, petty theft, vandalism, disorderly conduct, trespassing or fighting are offered the option of accepting the ticket or charge or attending Youth Court. The arresting police officer offers this option based on the type of offense. Teenagers come to Youth Court for sentencing only having already admitted guilt. When a youth is referred to the Youth Court, he or she appears before a jury of peers. The jurors, under adult supervision and earning TimeBank Hours for their service, determine and deliver a sentence to the youth. A sentence can involve: attending life skills classes on anger management, healthy relationships, employment skills and money management, alcohol and drug use awareness, and others; community service; writing an apology letter; serving on the jury and other strength based strategies decided by the jury. The youth has 60 days to complete the sentence. After the 60 days is up and the sentence is completed, the ticket or charge is destroyed and the violation does not appear on the respondent's record. If the respondent fails to complete the sentence in 60 days, the ticket or charge is issued. Upon completion of the sentence we encourage the respondent to continue to use the system of support the TimeBank can provide. Earning and receiving TimeBank Hours is a great way to keep adolescents involved in a strong social network building trust, skills, and work experience. In addition to the obvious benefit to referred youth who are given opportunities for productive community involvement, we work extensively with our jurors to develop leadership capabilities.
