A electrical istallatio is a fixed wirig system made up of equipmet, such as a cosumer uit (fuse box), lightig ad power circuits, ad switches ad sockets. Faulty ad old wirig is oe of the mai causes of electrical fires i the home. You ca reduce the risk a fire by havig the coditio of your cables, switches, sockets ad other accessories checked regularly. How old is my electrical istallatio? If ot, your home (or the home that you are plaig to buy) is probably wired with cables isulated i pvc (used i istallatios sice the 1960s), so it is ulikely that it will eed completely rewirig. However old your electrical istallatio is, it may get damaged ad will suffer from wear ad tear. So you should get a electricia to check its coditio at least every 10 years or whe you move ito a ew property. Defiitios Cables Wires that carry electricity. Or, you may eed a report to fid out the coditio of a istallatio after a flood or fire, or at the ed of the period recommeded i a previous electrical certificate or report. The five mai aims of a coditio report are to: 1 record the results of the ispectio ad testig to make sure the electrical istallatio is safe to be used util the ext ispectio (followig ay work eeded to make it safe); 2 fid ay damage ad wear ad tear that might affect safety, ad report it; 3 fid ay parts of the electrical istallatio that do ot meet the IET Wirig Regulatios; 4 help fid aythig that may cause electric shocks ad high temperatures, which ca lead to deaths, burs, fires ad other ijuries; ad 5 provide a importat record of the istallatio at the time of the ispectio, ad for ispectio ad testig i the future. Types of coditio report I geeral, there are two types of report applicable to a domestic istallatio. Visual coditio report Electrical istallatio coditio report Ispectio ad testig of electrical appliaces, ofte called portable appliace testig (PAT), is ot icluded i either of these reports. A visual coditio report does ot iclude testig, so the ispectio is ot likely to fid hidde damage to equipmet (for example, damage to cables ad joits). Usually, a visual ispectio report is oly suitable if the istallatio has bee tested i the last couple of years, ad the results were reported (o a electrical istallatio certificate or a electrical istallatio coditio report) as beig satisfactory (good eough). This safety report is a importat ad valuable documet which should be retaied for future referece. There are o govermet-approved schemes i the UK that register electricias to carry out periodic ispectio ad testig of existig electrical istallatios. However, the followig orgaisatios do register electricias that may be able to carry out this work, although their schemes may ot cover the whole of the UK. Before hirig a electricia to carry out ay work, check with the orgaisatio who has registered them, to make sure they are approved to carry out this type of work. By usig a electricia registered with oe of these orgaisatios to carry out the periodic ispectio ad testig of the electrical istallatio, you should receive a detailed coditio report of the electrical istallatio. If you decide to use a electricia who is ot registered with oe of the schemes metioed above, it is your resposibility to make sure that the electricia has the ecessary skills ad experiece to carry out the work.
