Pousette and the Pirates...Project Description Double Image Theater Lab, yearns to explore the world of the past and the present through object and light manipulation, music, dance and poetry. In this project, Pousette and the Pirates is a story passed down from Margot s Grandfather. Pousette is a little girl who gets kidnapped by pirates, cooks them pancakes that have too much yeast and after eating them the pirates float away. A simple story with great imagination, brought to life with poetic language that is supported by moving images and music. The audience travels on a sea voyage with Pousette, using her imagination to overcome great obstacles. The two major elements that are used in this piece are shadow and paper. We will build the stage and puppets in front of the audience to transform time and space starting with one piece of paper. Through manipulation, a piece of 2D paper will come to life and transform into a 3D character in the form of object puppetry, hand puppet and Bunraku style puppet. The paper is used as a vehicle to communicate the scenery, props and sound effects. Shadows are porjected on the performer s body, different objects and surfaces. We annimate the shadow by moving the projected surfaces in order to create depth. Shadows will be seen all around the audience. The quality of transparent, transluscent and opaque shadows are used to create a collage of mysterious and transformative images. This project has been workshoped in Virginia at the Charter House School 2015 and in Hawaii at the University of Hawaii at Manoa 2016 and the Variety School 2016. With the support of the Jim Henson Foundation Family Grant we will be able to continue to develop the project into a full legnth show and perform with live music by Daniel Townson, a musician from Brooklyn who specializes in acoustic guitar. We will present a new section of our work in progress from Pousette and the Pirates in 2017 at The Mandell School in Manhattan and then present the full length show in the 2017 New York International Fringe Festival.
