ÈÏ apple INSTRUCTIONS The following section contains two types of questions: Reading Comprehension and Sentence Completion. Each question is followed by four possible responses. Choose the response which best answers the question and mark its number in the appropriate place on the answer sheet. 26

READING COMPREHENSION This part consists of a passage followed by several related questions. For each question, choose the most appropriate answer based on the text. Text I (Questions 1-4) (1) Most mammals live on land. But some like whales and dolphins live in the sea. These mammals once lived on land, but millions of years ago they made the sea their home. Over time, their legs disappeared and they began to look like giant fish. (5) Some people think that whales and dolphins are fish because they look so much like fish. But because whales and dolphins are mammals, they are different from fish in many important ways. Unlike fish, whales and dolphins are warm-blooded. In addition, they do not stay underwater all the time, as fish do. In fact, whales and dolphins must come up to the surface of the water (10) every few minutes to breathe air. Whales and dolphins are also thought to be much more intelligent than fish. These mammals can "speak" to each other underwater. Scientists do not understand their languages, but they know that whales send each other messages and that dolphins "talk" to other dolphins. Questions 27 1. READING COMPREHENSION This part consists of a passage followed by several related questions. For each question, choose the most appropriate answer based on the text. Text II (Questions 14-17) (1) The word "jazz" has only four letters, but there are many different types of jazz music. During the more than one hundred years of its history, jazz has been played in many different styles, such as ragtime, blues, dixieland, swing, and bebop. Even though there are so many jazz styles, all jazz musicians use (5) certain techniques. They all make sudden, surprising changes in rhythm and they all improvise, or invent, music while they are playing it. Jazz was first played in New Orleans in the late 19th century. It developed from the music of the different cultures there American, French, African, and Native American. At the time, music was important in people's daily (10) lives. It was played at work, at religious festivals like Mardi Gras, and at funerals. People liked jazz because it expressed many human emotions, from happiness and love to sadness and anger. The more emotion musicians put into their music, the more popular it became. In the 1920s, jazz spread from New Orleans to Memphis and then to (15) Chicago. At the time, many people loved jazz but they did not think it was serious music. By the 1940s and 1950s, jazz was considered an important art form. Today, jazz is still taken seriously and it is still popular. It can be heard everywhere on television programs, in Broadway shows, and even at the Metropolitan Opera. 29 Questions 14. A good title for this text would be- (1) New Orleans Jazz (2) A Short History of Jazz (3) Emotions and Music (4) Popular Styles of Music
