Mke Music Winter 2018 Pilgrimge Pilgrimge is contempltive nd beutiful procession, inviting hedlmpcld singers to wlk while singing medievl melodies once sung on the pilgrimge route to Sntigo de Compostel. Typiclly, Pilgrimge concludes t locl cthedrl or church, where the group continues singing, this time ccompnied by church orgn. This event my be joined by singers of ll skill levels, from bsolute beginners to erly music specilists. It my be promoted s kind of Christms croling, but with hunting nd rrelyherd music. Although medievl pilgrims wlked for weeks to rech Sntigo, typicl Mke Music Winter pilgrimge will lst bout n hour. I fittingly ended my dy of peregrintions with Pilgrimge. Strting from Symphony Spce on the Upper West Side, the conductor Mlcolm J. Merriwether tught smll, hrdy troupe severl medievl songs tht religious pilgrims used to sing on the route to Sntigo de Compostel in Spin. We were given sheet music, nd for few numbers I ws ble to brush off my three yers of middle nd high school Ltin. (Hi, Mrs. Ellis!) Music is the most uplifting thing there cn be, My Klein, who plys ukulele in her spre time, told me s we wlked long Riverside Prk up to the Cthedrl Church of St. John the Divine, hedlmps illuminting the ncient words in our hnds. It s kind of mgic. Susn Oym, who hs now gone to three Mke Music events over the yers, dded, It s like somebody s drem of community. Solstice Serendes in New York City for Mke Music Winter, by Teddy Wyne, New York Times, December 23, 2016 Mke Music Winter is presented by the Mke Music Allince nd the NAMM Foundtion
2 WHAT YOU LL NEED 1. A good conductor with locl following. It s esy to ttrct singers to join the event, despite the unusul concept nd repertoire, if it is led by conductor they know nd trust. The conductor does not need to be n erly music expert, just someone with chorl experience. 2. Hedlmps for ech prticipnt, for reding the music while wlking in the drk, nd generlly looking cool. 3. A pitchpipe for the conductor to use en route. 4. Printed copies of medievl pilgrimge songs. It s good ide to mke the music vilble online in dvnce for people to downlod, but bring printed copies for those who show up emptyhnded. 5. Assistnt conductors to keep things together, if you re expecting lrge group where not everyone cn see or her the conductor t the front. 6. A plce (indoors or out) where prticipnts cn gther t the strt for bout 30 minutes nd run through the music, wlking route, nd church destintion t the end. The contempltive experience is heightened by selecting route tht goes through nturl spces like open fields or prks on the wy to the church. HOW TO ORGANIZE Permits Ech city hs its own regultions, but chnces re you will not need ny permits for this event. As long s you re not blocking trffic, nd you keep moving, very few permitting requirements will come into ply. Repertoire New York s nnul Mke Music Winter Pilgrimge fetures six songs tht re ttched t the end of this hndbook: Snt Mri, strel do di nd Quen omgen d Virgen from the Cntigs de Snt Mri of Alfonso X El Sbio (1221 1284), Stell Splendens, Ludemus Virginem, nd Splendens Ceptiger from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrt (14th century), nd the Coventry Crol (16th century). Simple rounds, like those from the Llibre Vermell, work especilly well. Feel free to dd your own repertoire. Mke Music Winter
3 Mrketing nd Recruiting Singers The key to successful Pilgrimge is to hve good conductor with locl following. If he or she cn spred the word to singers in their choirs, nd to collegues with choirs of their own, it will be esy to find interested singers. Idelly you should im to hve 30 to 50 singers, which gives the event full sound without being unmngeble. In ddition to your locl mrketing, plese send your event detils to ron@mkemusicdy.org s soon s possible for inclusion on the ntionl Mke Music Winter website nd in press outrech. WHAT TO DO ON DECEMBER 21 1. Arrive t the strting loction, nd pss out the sheet music nd hedlmps. The conductor should spend 30 minutes running through the music, so tht everyone hs chnce to become fmilir with the tunes while they re sttionery. (Don t get too hung up correcting everyone s pronuncition of medievl Portuguese.) 2. If you hve lrge group, identify the ssistnt conductors. When the group sets off, they should wlk slightly off to the side to mintin their own view of the min conductor, nd sing strongly themselves. 3. For the first song, strt singing while stnding in plce, then begin wlking fter the first verse. This will help keep everyone together on the right pitch nd tempo. You my choose to do the sme for ech song, depending on how wellcoordinted the group is. 4. Feel free to tke breks where you wlk without singing, to cross street for instnce, but mke the breks short wit too long nd people will strt chtting with ech other, lose focus, nd brek the contempltive mood. 5. Once you rech the church, it s most drmtic for singers to keep singing s they wlk up the church steps nd enter the snctury. The conductor then sits down t the orgn, nd t n pproprite moment, enters to ccompny the group for finl verse. Hopefully the singers will be on pitch, if not they cn mke quick recovery nd mtch the orgn. 6. Collect the hedlmps t the end, so you cn use them gin next yer, nd thnk everyone for coming!
