Making Meaning Interdisciplinary Humanities at UCG

Humanities, a vast field

Humanities at UCG A UCG Humanities major prepares for a master s in: Philosophy Religious Studies The Arts (Letteren)

Humanities at UCG Making Meaning: An Interdisciplinary Humanities Program Four perspectives: Investigating & Reporting Imagining & Creating Values & Decision-making Analysis

1. Investigating & Reporting We do not naïvely encounter the world that we inhabit. Instead, the world requires interpretation How do we make sense of, and subsequently describe, culture with the tools and objects at our disposal (signs, artefacts, language, media)? The Investigating and Reporting track leads to a master s program in the domains of History, Journalism, Media Studies, and Cultural Criticism

2. Imagining & Creating Meaning is never given or fixed; it is and must be continuously (re)created How do we imagine possible futures, other minds, or alternative ways of living? How do we reflect upon our lives through imagination? The Imagining and Creating track leads to a master s program in the domains of the Arts History, Arts and Culture, and Media Studies

3. Values & Decision-making We are concerned with questions of how we can and should act, whether individually or as part of a group Why should we be good? How should we be good? What are the extent of our obligations to others? How do we assess possible courses of action? The Values and Decision-making track leads to a master s program in the domains of International Relations and Organizations, Religious Studies, or Political Philosophy.

4. Analysis Undergirding these analyses is the structure of meaning itself: how images, concepts and thoughts come into being and are arranged What does it mean to mean something? How do we analyse the relationships between signs, concepts, thoughts? The Analysis track leads to a master s program in the domains of Philosophy (Logic), Culture and Cognition, Semiotics, or Linguistics.
