Benjamin Franklin Lesson Ideas http://teachbesideme.com Not for commercial use. Benjamin Franklin was a man of many talents. He was an author, inventor, scientist, politician, helped organize the mail service, fire department, and public library system, printed a newspaper, and founded a school. There are so many things we can learn from him! This lesson has many fun way to learn about Benjamin Franklin with young learners.

Quotes from Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin wrote the Poor Richard s Almanack under the name of Richard Saunders. The almanack contained weather, calendar, sayings, poems, astronomical and astrological information. One thing that is well-known from the almanac is that it has a lot of quotes and sayings with morals- also called proverbs. Check out the quotes below and see if you can figure out the meaning of it. Write the meaning in the second column. Quote They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. A little neglect may breed great mischief...for want of a nail the shoe was lost; for want of a shoe the horse was lost; and for want of a horse the rider was lost. Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead. Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise. He that lieth down with Dogs, shall rise up with Fleas. God helps them that help themselves. The worst wheel of a cart makes the most noise. After crosses and losses, men grow humbler and wiser. A good example is the best sermon. Meaning

When the well's dry, we know the worth of water. Little strokes, fell great oaks. Who is rich? He that rejoices in his Portion. People who are wrapped up in themselves make small packages. We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately. The sleeping Fox catches no poultry. Up! up! Who has deceived thee so oft as thy self? Does thou love life? Then do not squander time; for that's the stuff life is made of. There was never a good war or a bad peace. A penny saved is a penny earned. Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor liberty to purchase power.

Magic Squares Benjamin Franklin loved solving magic square math problems. Magic squares are problems that all equal the same number in all directions. Franklin actually was the first to create and solve an 8x8 magic square grid. See if you can solve the one below using the numbers 0-15. You can use each number only once and each row should add up to 30 (forward, backward and diagonal).

Franklin s Inventions Benjamin Franklin was a famous inventor. He invented many wonderful things that we continue to use today. Following are some of the things that he created. Learn about each of them and write what you have learned. What need did they fulfill at the time? Three-Wheel Clock: Bifocals:

Odometer: Lightning Rod:

Library Chair: Swim fins:

Long Arm: Franklin Stove:

Create Your Own Invention! Think of something in your life that you can make better. Invent something that you think can fit that need. Draw a picture of it and tell about it below.

Political Cartoons Benjamin Franklin created the first political cartoon and it is still a famous image today. The cartoon called Join or Die was published in the newspaper during his day. It was a message to the country during the French & Indian War that the states needed to unite together to be stronger. It was used again during the Revolutionary War. Look through newspapers to learn more about political cartoons. Find some and see if you can understand their meanings. Create your own political cartoon. Think of something in the news currently, or an issue in your own family. Create a cartoon depicting that topic.
