Summer Reading Entering 9 th Grade August 2018 Please read the books listed below in preparation for 9 th grade. 1. Devotional Literature: The Last Sin Eater by Francine Rivers 2. Greek Mythology Literature: Tales of the Greek Heroes by Roger Lancelyn Green OR Heroes, Gods, and Monsters of the Greek Myths by Bernard Evslin 3. Novel of your choice Write a book analysis with personal response for The Last Sin Eater. Create a Power Point or Prezi for Greek choice. Write three diary entries for a character in your choice novel. You should read the books, type your book analysis, create your presentation, and bring them to class on the first day of school, August 2018. (Please email Power Point or Prezi to Mrs. Andujar by the first day of school.) You will submit the analysis essay to Turn It In during the first week of school. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Mrs. Andujar candujar@christchapel.org Plagiarism warning: These reports should be your work and your thoughts. If you read anything about your books and/or use any ideas for your reports from an outside source (like a website), you MUST cite your source. Even if you do not quote word for word, if you get ideas from a source, you MUST cite it. Therefore, my recommendation is that you read the books ONLY and write without consulting anything other than the books and your Pocket Style Manual.

Entering 9 th Grade Book 1: Devotional Literature The Last Sin Eater by Francine Rivers For The Last Sin Eater, you will be writing a book response. This is a type of book report in which you analyze the book and also connect with it personally. It is NOT simply summarizing. Each set of questions on the back has two parts: analysis and personal response. A sample outline is provided for you below. Choose 2 sets. Write one paragraph for each part: one paragraph for analysis and one paragraph for response. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence. For your analysis paragraph, quote the book at least 2 times. Put the page number for your quote in parentheses after the quote. Write an introduction and a conclusion to your essay. Your report will have 6 paragraphs. MLA Works Cited page (correct format) (Try your best. We will learn more in 9 th grade.) General Guidelines: Typed; 12 font; Times New Roman or Arial font; black ink; MLA format Formal language; no contractions; no you/your 3rd person for analysis paragraphs; 1st person for response paragraphs Proofread Sample outline: I. Introduction a. Title and author of the book b. Summary of the book (7-10 sentences) c. Thesis statement (sentence that states what your whole essay is going to be about) II. III. Body Paragraphs -- You will have 4 body paragraphs. Choose 2 sets from A-F. Write a topic sentence for each paragraph. Each analysis paragraph should have at least two quotes from the book (page numbers in parentheses after the quote) Conclusion a. Final thoughts about the characters b. What you think the theme or message is of the book. What did the author want the audience to learn? OR What insight into life did the author hope the audience would understand?

The Last Sin Eater, Francine Rivers Sets of Analysis and Response Questions -- Choose 2 Set A Analysis write 1 paragraph: In your opinion, who or what caused the families in the valley to believe in a sin eater? Why do you think these people went along with such an idea? What consequences occurred because of their fear? How did they respond when confronted with the truth? Personal Response write 1 paragraph: What traditions or patterns in your life might be holding you captive? What are some ways fear might prevent you from experiencing truth? Set B Analysis write 1 paragraph: What things were revealed about Brogan? How were they revealed? What excuses did he offer for his actions? How did he respond to truth? Personal Response write 1 paragraph: What kinds of excuses do you use to cover up your secrets? Set C Analysis write 1 paragraph: What revelations were made concerning Sim? Who revealed them and why? How did Sim respond to the truth? What actions did he take? Personal Response write 1 paragraph: How do you respond when confronted with the truth? Are you a reactor, an action taker, or do you just ignore it? Explain. Set D Analysis write 1 paragraph: Contrast Iona and Bletsung. What was revealed about each woman? What motivated each one? Upon hearing the truth, what course of action did each woman take? What lifestyle did each choose thereafter? Personal Response write 1 paragraph: When facing difficult choices, what motivates you to either at or do nothing? Be specific. Set E Analysis write 1 paragraph: What was revealed about Cadi? About her mother, Fia? How did their guilty feelings keep them apart? What role did Lilybet play? Compare Cadi s and Fia s actions and resolve regarding truth. Personal Response write 1 paragraph: How has tragedy impaired your relationships? What have you done to promote healing in others? Who comforted or counseled you? Set F Analysis write 1 paragraph: Discuss Fagan s relationship with the stranger. What was missing in his relationship with his father? What was revealed to Fagan about his family? How did Elda encourage him? Personal Response write 1 paragraph: How do you deal with rejection? To whom do you turn for encouragement?
