The Home for Humor & Laughter Professionals September 2017 Save The Date! This complimentary Humor Connection newsletter is one of the many ways that AATH fulfills our mission to study, practice and promote healthy humor. You can join our efforts by joining AATH at www.aath.org From the AATH President Nila Nielsen, CHP September Thinking of our Members AATH Annual Humor Conference & Humor Academy April 12 15, 2018 San Diego, California Presented by: I'd like to welcome our new members! We're so glad you found AATH and look forward to meeting each of you personally. While the joy of adding new faces make me smile, I do have to reflect on the past few weeks, as they have been full of concern for many of our AATH members. We worried about our members located near the Gulf who braced for Hurricane Harvey, and also for those who feared the uncertainty of the everchanging path of Irma. We crossed our fingers for our members who lived near raging fires, hoping they could avoid the devastation of their homes. We were saddened to hear of members dealing with illness as they fought for recovery. We heard from our international members who also expressed varying issues of concern. Indeed, it's been quite a month! We continue to send our heartfelt wishes that all are well and bouncing back. CTCA is the home of integrative and compassionate cancer care. They never stop searching for and providing powerful and innovative therapies to heal the whole person, improve quality of life and restore hope. 1 877 219 7471 Visit CTCA One can truly appreciate that resilience can be difficult when life is disrupted. Luckily, our members have a support system. When life throws curve balls, they know that having a 'reserve of humor' in place will help them re group, renew, and re think life's priorities. Many of our members refer to AATH as their 'humor family' as do I. Our members know that humor helps to lighten the load. I am so proud of each of our members for their on going support of each other during this and every month. When the theme of 'Resilience Harnessing the Power of Humor' was chosen for our upcoming AATH Conference, I had no idea that it would be such a timely choice. Do plan to attend! Register here. Cheryl Fell, AATH's very own 'Nurse FUNshine,' has communicated a dream of hers to the AATH leadership team. As a nurse, Cheryl knows that funding to attend the conference and then the additional cost to receive needed Continuing Education units (CE) can be cost prohibitive. Letters to Dr. Wiggy by Dr. Ellen Krumholz Mandel (Reviewed by Florence Ditlow, RN) Cheryl Fell, Nurse FUNshine Her dream is now our dream! We are grateful to Cheryl for taking action. She has contributed a substantial gift to initiate the goal of providing these Continuing Education Credits at no additional cost to health care, educators, social workers, etc. However, this goal will take additional funding to reimburse the cost for the credentialing verification process. Let's get this done! Please go to the AATH website Click on the DONATE button then fill in the bottom box with the words: CE Fund Thank you for making this dream come true! Surf's Up San Diego: 2018 Conference Update September With the recent storms, it warmed our hearts to see the outpouring of love and healthy humor among our members on social media. Serious Dr.Wiggy is alive and well, saying she's living proof humor heals the soul. Dr.Wiggy is a friend of author Ellen Krumholtz Mandel, the nickname arising after hair loss due to cancer treatment. Ellen was more than distraught over her friend's health challenge; she sent gifts and expressed concern but wanted to make an uplifting difference. She proceeded to send regular email letters reminiscences to Dr.Wiggy and here Ellen shows the value of humor as a distraction from discomfort. We learn from her get well letters that the author is a storehouse of childhood related memory, from penny candy, sneakers for six bucks or the family "circus car." She later describes her daughter's ill fated piano recital, punctuated by her daughter laughing at other kid's mistakes. Ellen's mishaps while driving! Traffic stop while eating brownies, diet through littering and application of mascara as lipstickany of these would qualify as "I Love Lucy" segments. Ellen reveals how she inadvertently primed her tears for a funeral by joining unsuspecting strangers from a group of nearby mourners. All the while tolerating a lifetime of uncontrollable hair? That complaining from the author is a coping device used to hurdle her frustrations. She objects to medical pros that overbook and overcharge, carps at athletic women who don't

stress is no joking matter, but at AATH we know the value of timely, appropriate humor among trusted friends and colleagues to help us cope with whatever life brings our way. We also lift each other up during the difficulties of grief and loss, with love across the miles for our AATH family. To all of you who are in the midst of your own storms right now, we send you our love and best wishes! In San Diego, we are busy preparing the very best conference experience possible for our AATH family and friends next April 12 15, and the FOMO this year will be off the charts so please don't miss it. We are using a new mobile and web app that we hope will give you even more opportunities to engage in the experience leading up to and throughout the event. You can see the agenda, speaker bios, sponsors and more here. Once you register for the conference you will be able to create an attendee profile and start to customize your experience. I want to strongly encourage you to preregister this year for several reasons: 1) free t shirt, 2) free copy of the bestselling book from our keynoter Dr. Srini Pillay, Tinker, Doodle, Dabble, Try: Unleash the Power of the Unfocused Mind, and 3) we will sell out and space is limited this year. So, if you think you're going to attend please register and book your spot at the site hotel at the very reduced AATH rate (thanks again to Ed Dunkelblau) right away! Speaking of Srini, I had a great chat with him about his presentation and wanted to share it with you here. In case you missed it, you can also see my 15 minute interview with Yakov Smirnoff. (Click his picture below.) Next month, Yakov will be featured on our AATH Podcast LaughBox with Chip Lutz, so stay tuned for more info! sweat and whines her way through the rigors of vacation. I noted most of her praise shone on her grandchildren, especially when they show compassion for the curse of frizzy hair. In closing her book, the author is embarking on her own medical challenge. Ellen's diagnosis of leukemia was met with resilience in 2014; she likens the selection of her oncologist to shopping for a formal dress. We trust that she relied on humor along with a diet and lifestyle shift, though Ellen kept the focus of her book on Dr. Wiggy. The thing humor does is often quiet, as a partner to determination, humor goes unsung...although years bear out the role humor plays in the transformation of diseases such as cancer. I believe Ellen proves email to be valuable in her intent for keeping loved ones connected. Recommended for oncology support groups. I'm Florence Ditlow RN, your book reviewer. I'm a long time AATH member, a midwife of humor in hospitals, author of two books and student of two dogs who are revealing to me that the secret of nonverbal humor is inner joy. Members who would like their book to be considered for an upcoming Humor Connection book review, should contact info@aath.org. Please use Book Review Submission in the subject line. Member News Send us YOUR news for our next issue by using this online form: Member News Form On August 24th, Brenda Elsagher, CHP was the keynote speaker at an event held by the United Ostomy Association of America in Irvine, California. Patrick Harris was a volunteer with the Red Cross for the Houston, Texas hurricane victims.

Finally, we are looking for sponsors who want to be part of our special Comedy for Caregivers Event Friday night, April 13th. This program will be included in your conference registration, and we are inviting 250 special guests from the community to join us as our treat. We're looking for companies and organizations who are interested in table sponsorships to help cover our costs. If you know anyone who might be willing to help us out, please email Kathy@aath.org for a copy of the Comedy for Caregivers promo flier and sponsor commitment form. With love and laughter, Heidi Hanna, PhD, CHP Conference Chair, Monkey Mind Karyn Buxman, RN, CSP, CPAE, CHP Conference Co Co On September 12th, Viva Editions published Allen Klein's latest book titled "Secrets Kids Know...That Adults Oughta Learn: Enrich Your Life by Seeing It Through the Eyes of a Child." The book is available in paperback, e book or Audio CD at Amazon Barnes & Noble, IndieBound, itunes, GooglePlay, Kobo and Allen's website. Allen Klein and Steve Sultanoff, CHP were both quoted prominently in an article on "5 Tips to Reduce Stress Using Humor." You can read the article at the Medical Daily website. Frank Chindamo recently conducted a couple of studies on stress reduction for healthcare providers. In one study, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals watched a one hour live stand up comedy show. In the other, therapists watched a short video on the LaughMD app. In both studies, stress levels were shown to reduce significantly! For more information, check out the press release from Chapman University. Karyn Buxman and Heidi Hanna AATH Humor Academy CHP (Certified Humor Professional) Feature You May Pick Your Nose Monnie Kinlaw, CHP Traveling with AATH AATH Members Don and Mary Kay Morrison are traveling around northern Europe and meeting up with other AATH members where they can. So far, they have met Jessica Bytautas in Finland (pictured here with Don) and Harald Ellingsen in Norway. You just never know where they will show up!

Your mother never gave you permission to pick your nose. But I have! AATH members know the power of the Red Nose. We use them frequently either by wearing or giving them away. We see the smiles, giggles and laughter they produce. My project utilized the power of the Red Nose in the workplace with a well adult working population. I set out a large bowl of Red Noses at a large professional conference registration desk with the caption "You May Pick Your Nose." I recorded reactions, comments, interviewed participants and made observations throughout the threeday conference on those who chose to "pick their nose." I then provided the same bowl at the claims office of a major hotel chain using the same procedure. The purpose of the project was to determine if the use of a Red Nose could impact positive emotion and improve customer service in a well adult workforce. ~ Monnie Kinlaw, CHP, is a Registered Nurse with a long career that includes occupational and agricultural health, case management and utilization review. Her work is for a major hotel chain in Occupational Health/Claims. Twenty years ago, she developed a company, KK Educational Services and recently co founded another, Entertainment CE. Both companies provide professional educational opportunities emphasizing fun and entertainment. She became involved in AATH and the Humor Academy in 2014 to infuse the use of humor in her educational experiences. Given the unique exposure opportunities that were provided, she states that she has grown both professionally and personally. Checking off a top item on her Bucket List, a speaking engagement at a large national conference was due to her HA experience.
