MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER READING 2017-2018 WHY DO WE HAVE SUMMER READING? Summer is a time for rest and relaxation and enjoying the outdoors, but time must also be spent to make sure you are more successful as a student next year. Participating in a summer reading program has been shown to do just that. We hope that you take this summer s opportunity to broaden your horizons through reading and enjoy a new book. Summer Reading has been shown to improve reading ability, writing ability, vocabulary, grammar, test scores, and an enjoyment of reading. BOOK CHOICES This year, there are two possible books. All students must read at least one book. Good Enough by Paula Yoo ISBN-13: 978-0060790851 Publisher: HarperTeen; a First Edition First Printing edition (February 5, 2008) Overview from Amazon.com: How to make your Korean parents happy: 1. Get a perfect score on the SATs. 2. Get into HarvardYalePrinceton. 3. Don't talk to boys.* Patti's parents expect nothing less than the best from their Korean-American daughter. Everything she does affects her chances of getting into an Ivy League school. So winning assistant concertmaster in her All-State violin competition and earning less than 2300 on her SATs is simply not good enough. But Patti's discovering that there's more to life than the Ivy League. To start with, there's Cute Trumpet Guy. He's funny, he's talented, and he looks exactly like the lead singer of Patti's favorite band. Then, of course, there's her love of the violin. Not to mention cool rock concerts. And anyway, what if Patti doesn't want to go to HarvardYalePrinceton after all? Paula Yoo scores big in her hilarious debut novel about an overachiever who longs to fit in and strives to stand out. The pressure is on! *Boys will distract you from your studies.

Rising Above: How 11 Athletes Overcame Challenges in Their Youth to Become Stars by Gregory Zuckerman, Elijah Zuckerman, and Gabriel Zuckerman ISBN-13: 978-0147515681 Publisher: Puffin Books; Reprint edition (May 2, 2017) Overview from Amazon.com Team USA goalkeeper Tim Howard was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome in 6th grade. He went on to become a national treasure after single-handedly keeping America competitive in the 2014 World Cup. Stephen Curry was told he was too small, too weak, and too slow to even receive a scholarship to play college basketball. He outworked everyone and went on to become MVP of the National Basketball Association. Jim Abbott was born without his right hand, yet he refused to be defined by what he lacked. He went on to pitch a no-hitter in the Major Leagues. Athlete after athlete in this book found discipline, hope, and inspiration on the playing field, rising above their circumstances. Filled with first-hand accounts from stars who exemplify the idea of enduring at all costs, Rising Above will serve as a must-read source of inspiration for kids and sports fans of all ages. WHERE DO I GET THE BOOK? Borrow from one of the local libraries. The MHS library will have a limited number to borrow. Borrow a book from someone who has already finished reading the book.
