Summer is a time for rest and relaxation and enjoying the outdoors, but time must also be spent to make sure you are more successful as a student next year. Participating in a summer reading program has been shown to do just that. We hope that you take this summer s opportunity to broaden your horizons through reading and enjoy a new book. Summer Reading has been shown to improve reading ability, writing ability, vocabulary, grammar, test scores, and an enjoyment of reading. BOOK CHOICES This year, there are two possible books. All students must read at least one book. Book Trailer: Make a movie trailer for one of the two book choices. The trailer should be at least two minutes long and include the following: Text, music, and images or video. Hook or Attention Grabber Main characters, Setting Important Events (Don t give away the ending!) It should be clear, loud enough to hear, and easy to understand. The trailer must be accessible on the school computers, preferably Windows Media Player. Any trailer that does not play will not receive credit. Complete the pre-writing organizer and write at least 250 words (typed) about your experience creating the book trailer. Explain the connections between the book and the trailer. Soundtrack: Pick ten songs that would be used in the movie version of one of the two books. Create an album cover that would be used for the soundtrack. The album cover must use color and represent the characters and main events of the book. On the back of the album cover, list the ten songs included in the soundtrack. Be sure to include the title of the song, artist/composer, and its copyright. Complete the pre-writing organizer and write a typed list of the songs with a 2-3 sentence explanation per song explaining why each song was selected. Each explanation should include a specific reference to the book and when it might be played during the movie. Self-Reflection: Complete the pre-writing organizer and write a reflection about an experience you have had that is similar to that of Patti in Good Enough or the stories in Rising Above. For example, write about a time when you had to overcome seemingly overwhelming obstacles. Explain what helped you to overcome them. Or, you may write about similarities you see between Patti and yourself. The reflection must include at least 5 explicit connections to the book. The selfreflection must always reference the book.
