Act I: an afternoon in December Act II: later that evening Act III: Scene 1: later that night Scene 2: early the next morning Arsenic and Old Lace from the director: I chose this play for its ubiquity, rather than its topicality. But the first thing I discovered in my research was that its first Broadway run coincided with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. No good play ever exists in a socio-political vacuum. We cannot ignore the period that created the piece. Nor can we ignore that we are Canadians performing a most American play. It s easy to forget Canada had been at war since 1939. How Uncle Sam managed to keep his fingers in his ears for three years is a question better saved for psychologists. At the heart of this hysterically funny play is a family deeply afflicted by mental illness. There is a goodly amount of gallows humour. Each Brewster clearly displays contemporary-classifiable mental illnesses. We ve tried our best to be true and sympathetic to those illnesses, just as the playwright was. You may also notice that we ve attempted to recreate the speech patterns of the period. Reliable sources indicate the surname Roosevelt would ve been closer to Ruse-uh-velt, rather than Rowz-ah-velt. Finally (and most importantly) thank you so much for coming! Merry Christmas! Directed by Esther Parry Through the joy and heartache of a long marriage, Ethel and Norman have loved each other and shared a love for their summer home on Golden Pond, the natural Eden in which all the play s conflicts begin and end. Still as touching and funny as it was in its 1979 opening on Broadway, this play makes the sunset of a love more beautiful than you can imagine. arsenic & old Lace by Joseph Kesselring ARSENIC & OLD LACE DEC. 1-17, 2016 by Joseph Kesselring. Directed by Tim Fransky We present one of the great, madcap comedies of all time. Mortimer decides he will never marry until he falls for the girl-next-door and they wed on Halloween. When the couple return home, he finds a corpse hidden in a window seat, his aunts behaving very strangely, and the rest of his family bordering on insanity. The bodies pile up and the plot thickens, as they say! P R E S E N T S NORM FOSTER S THE THE MELVILLE BOYS FEB. 2-18, 2017 by Norm Foster. Directed by Phil Bowerman Owen and Lee, though brothers, are polar opposites in character and circumstances. When they decide to go away together and do a little fishing, the waters get rougher by the hour as two women enter their getaway and really rock the boat. This is truly Foster at his finest and the comedy is smart, unpretentious, and sometimes sweetly sad. PRIDE & PREJUDICE Mar. 30 - Apr. 15, 2017 from the novel by Jane Austen, adapted for the stage by Jon Jory. Directed by Lise Lindenberg Imagine this. It is 1813; you have five daughters who will not inherit any of your estate and so must marry well. Your daughter Elizabeth witty and independent encounters the eligible but proud Mr. Darcy and domestic life is turned upside down in this charming and humorous drama of friendship, rivalry, mistaken beliefs and love. LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS June 1-17, 2017 by Alan Menken & Howard Ashman. Directed by Meaghan Lattanzio From the depths of the inner-city darkness of Skid Row comes the wild ride that is Little Shop of Horrors. A dark, but hilarious musical tribute to the doo wop music and B-rated horror movies of the 1950s; it features a score that will have you tapping your toes and rethinking the extremes you would go to for love, fame and fortune. by Alan Menken & Howard Ashman EXCELLENT COMMUNITY THEATRE 2016-2017 SEASON 65 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNITY THEATRE PINNACLE PLAYHOUSE... the play's the thing...
