Only suitably qualified persns shuld undertake any electrical wiring. Installatin tips & safety advice This guide ffers a step-by-step guide fr the installatin f a Slatube 160DS and 290DS. In general, a Slatube 160DS can prvide enugh daylight t illuminate a dark area f up t 10 sqm. A Slatube 290DS can prvide enugh daylight t illuminate a dark area f up t 18 sq m. Bth examples are based n a 2.44 m ceiling height with a 1.83 m tube length. Fr larger areas, yu may need t install mre than ne Slatube. This infrmatin is fr guidance purpses nly. Allw at least 4 hurs fr the installatin, particularly if this is yur first installatin. During the day, turn ff all the lights in the rm t see hw much natural light cmes in thrugh the windws (if any). Yu shuld then be able t determine the best psitin fr the Slatube diffuser. Avid rf dme lcatins shaded by trees, ridges and chimneys, r near water channels r valleys. Avid attic areas with bstructins such as gas, water r drain pipes, air ducts, flues r furnaces, fixed strage tanks. Measure the distance between the rf and the ceiling t ensure yu have rdered sufficient reflective tubing t cver the distance. All reflective extensin tube jints shuld verlap a minimum f 50mm and be fixed tgether using the aluminium tape (and self-tapping screws if required). All adhesives, seals and tapes shuld be applied t a dry and dust-free surface. The ideal wrking temperature is apprximately 22 C. Ensure all jints (including seams) are taped sufficiently and all edges well rubbed in (tip: use the tape backing paper) t prevent the adhesive drying ut. Ensure yur rf is in an apprpriate cnditin t supprt the wrk necessary fr a Slatube installatin withut damaging its waterprfing prperties. Slatube will generally perfrm best if the rf dme is lcated n the suth, east r west elevatin. If the rf dme is t be psitined n a nrth facing elevatin, psitining the rf dme as high as pssible n the rf will enhance perfrmance. Yu may chse t supprt any extensin tubes with a wire r similar retainer fixed t the rafters if the extensin tubes are at a significant angle away frm the vertical. When the Slatube is initially installed, it is nt uncmmn fr it t cndensate lightly n the inside f the dme fr the first few weeks until humid air inside the tube dissipates; the dme is designed t cllect any internal cndensatin and direct it t the utside f the flashing. The flashing insulatr prvided is essential t reduce the pssibility f cndensatin, but in particularly cld climates, it is als advisable t tape a jacket f insulating material (ptinal extra) arund the utside f the extensin tubes and up int the vid between the tp tube assembly and rf flashing; this is t prevent the pssibility f cndensatin build-up n the exterir f the cmpnents within the rf vid. Lcate this pint in the rf vid it may help if yu measure the distance frm yur lft hatch t the desired lcatin first r use ther clues such as spt lights, light fittings r flues t cnfirm the lcatin. Find a clear space between jists as clse t the desired lcatin as pssible and unbstructed by pipes, cables r ther bstacles. Draw a 275mm circle fr the 160DS r a 375mm circle fr the 290DS n the upper side f the plasterbard ceiling. D nt cut the ceiling hle until yu are sure that the rf flashing will als fit in the desired lcatin and that the tp and bttm tube assemblies will align. 275mm Ø hle fr 160DS 375mm Ø hle fr 290DS and the rf flashing The rf flashing can be psitined either vertically abve the diffuser lcatin r up t an angle f 30 frm vertical in any directin frm the diffuser psitin by rtating the tw angle adaptrs supplied (diagram A). The diagram shws tw pssible psitins fr the rf flashing relative t the psitin f the tp and bttm tube assemblies. Nte: 0-90 angle adaptrs are available if a greater degree f variatin is required. Ensure that the rute between the rf flashing and the ceiling diffuser is clear and unbstructed. r Step 2 Mark the rf flashing and diffuser psitin Cut a small hle in the rf felt and identify the rf psitin (tile) frm inside using a lng nail r wire prbe s yu can lcate it again later frm the rf side Once yu are sure that the circle yu drew earlier n the upper side f the plasterbard ceiling is in the crrect lcatin, screw a marker screw thrugh the ceiling frm abve, leaving apprximately an inch shwing in the rf vid yu can use this later as a handle when cutting the hle (diagram B). Rf Ceiling Step 3 Cnfirm and cut the diffuser lcatin Check the marker screw frm the rm belw t cnfirm the centre f the diffuser lcatin is crrect. In the rf vid, cut arund the marked circle, taking care t hld nt the screw handle t prevent the cut-ut falling (diagram C). Tip: T cntain dust and debris when cutting the ceiling hle, ne persn culd hld an empty bx under the ceiling while the ther cuts the hle frm abve. Alternatively, lay a dust sheet belw. Step 4 Installing the bttm tube assembly Insert the bttm tube assembly up int the ceiling and, if the installatin is nt vertical, rtate the angle adaptr t pint twards the rf flashing lcatin. Using a crsshead screwdriver, rtate and tighten tw f the twist-lck fastening clamps t temprarily attach the bttm tube assembly t the ceiling (diagram D). D nt remve the prtective liner frm the inside f the bttm tube at this pint. Tip: Affix a plastic bag ver the end f the bttm tube assembly t capture any dust and debris that may be created when carrying ut the rf wrks. Page 3

T cmplete this step, please refer t the separate rf flashing installatin guide supplied with the flashing Step 6 Aligning the tp tube assembly Insert the tp tube assembly int the rf flashing frm the utside. If necessary, rtate the angle adaptr s that the tp tube assembly pints twards the bttm tube assembly in the ceiling. The lengths L1 and L2 (diagram E) shuld be equal t ensure alignment. Nte: Fr flat rf/vaulted ceiling applicatins where n extensin tubes are required, the bttm tube assembly will be fitted up inside the tp tube assembly. L1 L2 r L1 L2 Step 7 Installing the tp tube assembly Remve the tp tube assembly frm the rf flashing. Tape the angle adaptr jint and tube seams f the tp tube assembly with the fil tape prvided (diagram F), smthing the tape with tape backing material t ensure the tape is well adhered. Remve the prtective lining film frm the inside f the tube and insert the tp tube assembly int the rf flashing, aligning it again in the directin f the bttm tube assembly. Securely fasten the dme ring f the tp tube assembly t the flashing using the dme screws prvided. Step 8 LightTracker reflectr (if used) The LightTracker reflectr shuld be used nly fr steep, nrth-facing rfs r wall munted applicatins; it is nt required fr flat rfs r suth, east r west rf aspects. Fr steep, nrth-facing rfs, psitin the LightTracker dme reflectr in the nrth side f the dme, with the reflective side facing due suth. Fr wall-munted applicatins the LightTracker shuld be placed at the bttm f the dme facing skywards. T fix the LightTracker in place, align the hles in the reflectr with the tabs inside the dme and snap int place. Peel the prtective film frm the reflectr (diagram G). Step 9 Installing the rf dme Align the fur tabs n the dme base with the click lcks n the dme ring and press dwn firmly t click int place. Check t make sure that all fur lcks are fully engaged (diagram H). Step 10 Cnnecting the tp & bttm tube assemblies Fr shrt installatins with n extensin tubes prceed t Step 12. Extensin tubes have deep and shallw ntches at each end s that they may be frmed int slightly tapered tubes. Weave ne end f the tube thrugh a deep ntch, the ther end thrugh a shallw ntch, ensuring the tube is als held in the centre ntch (diagram I). Tape the tube seam with a shrt piece f fil tape at either end t hld the jints temprarily in psitin. The smaller diameter tube end (deep ntch) shuld always pint twards the bttm tube assembly. Assemble all the required extensin tubes, telescping them tgether t prvide the ttal length f tube required. Nte the jint verlap indicatin lines (50mm verlap). At this stage, use small pieces f fil tape t hld the tubes tgether. Check that the assembled tube length is crrect by hlding the extensin tube(s) alngside the tp and bttm tube assemblies. Adjust the tube length as necessary. Fr very lng r angled tube lengths, self-tapping screws are prvided t fasten the extensin tubes tgether. Tape all tube jints and seams securely, smthing the tape t create a gd, firm seal. shallw ntch deep ntch Step 12 Applying the expansin jint seal Fr shrt installatins with n extensin tubes the expansin jint seal is applied 25mm frm the tp edge f the bttm tube assembly. Fr installatins using extensin tubes, the expansin jint seal is applied 25mm frm the tp edge f the uppermst extensin tube. The expansin jint seal shuld be applied t the utside diameter f the tube: remve the backing strip frm the expansin jint seal and adhere it 25mm frm the tp edge f the tube. The seal shuld wrap twice arund the tube, nt verlapping but butting up clsely (diagram J). expansin jint seal Step 13 Installing the bttm tube assembly If any angle adjustment is required t the bttm tube assembly t align it with the tp tube assembly this shuld be dne nw; use a crsshead screwdriver t lsen the twist-lck fastening clamps. Remve the assembly frm the ceiling, and rtate the angle adaptr if necessary t ensure alignment with the tp tube assembly and repsitin it back int the ceiling. If extensin tubes are being used please g t Step 14. If n extensin tubes are being used, tape the seams and re-insert the bttm tube assembly, sliding it up int the tp tube assembly and then lck all fur twist-lck fastening clamps int the ceiling (diagram K). Nte: If the ceiling clamps cannt be engaged wing t the thickness f the ceiling r because f prximity t jists, the bttm tube assembly can be secured with the screws prvided int the ceiling/jists thrugh screw psitin indicatrs in the ceiling flange. D nt ver tighten the bttm tube assembly t the ceiling as this may prevent fitting f the diffuser. Remve the prtective film frm the inside f the bttm tube assembly. Step 14 Installing extensin tubes Fr installatins with extensin tubes, remve the prtective film frm the inside f the bttm tube assembly and all ther tubing if nt already dne s. Tape the seams and re-insert the bttm tube assembly and then lck all twist-lck fastening clamps int the ceiling. Insert the extensin tube with the expansin jint seal (a) up int the tp tube assembly. Then insert the ther end (b) int the bttm tube assembly (diagram L). Ensure there is a minimum 50mm verlap at either end. Diagram M Step 15 Installing the Natural Effects Lens and diffuser Insert the Natural Effects Lens straight up int the bttm tube assembly until it sits int the recess at the base f the bttm tube assembly, with the clear plastic tab pinting dwnwards. Then place the ceiling diffuser/fitting up int the lwer edge f the bttm tube assembly, aligning the male and female lugs, and twist clckwise t secure in place (diagram M). In rder t clean the diffuser r t replace the lamp in the ptinal Slatube integral electric light kit, yu may remve the diffuser by twisting the diffuser anti-clckwise t release it and then remve the lens by pulling gently dwn n the clear plastic lens tab.
