STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE FOR PARTICIPATION IN SCHOOL SPONSORED CO- CURRICULAR AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES IN THE PERFORMING ARTS Winter Park High Schl is prud f its c-curricular and extra-curricular activities and the many cntributins ur students have made t build a strng sense f cmmunity. We expect that all students will embrace the schl s traditin f excellence in academics, sprtsmanship, citizenship and fair play. Students participating in c-curricular and extra-curricular activities represent Winter Park High Schl in the cmmunity, district, state and even the natin. We believe the pprtunity t participate in these activities is a privilege, nt a right. We expect all students t maintain Winter Park s traditin f excellence in behavir as well as academic excellence in and ut f the classrm. In rder t remain qualified fr nn-classrm based activities, a student must meet the requirements and fulfill the respnsibilities utlined in the Perfrming Arts C-Curricular and Extra-Curricular Activities Agreement. Failure t adhere t the terms and cnditins f this agreement culd result in the lss f a student s extra-curricular participatin at Winter Park High Schl. 3

Parents, we need yur supprt in ur cntinued pursuit f excellence and ensuring that Winter Park students develp a sense f respnsibility reflected by gd citizenship in all aspects f their lives. Expectatins fr Participating in C-Curricular and Extra-Curricular Activities Address Accuracy: If at any time, a student has a change f address, the parent r student must infrm bth the directr and schl registrar. This includes mving frm ne parent r relative t anther. Failure t d s can cmprmise the ensemble s ability t participate in district-spnsred events. In such cases, the principal, directr, and district crdinatr will review the case and determine the actins t be taken. Attendance: Students must attend at least fur (4) perids f schl n the day(s) f an extra-curricular activity in rder t participate. If a student is nt in attendance fr fur (4) perids, a waiver must be requested by the student r parent frm the Standard f Excellence in the Perfrming Arts Review Cmmittee. The wavier must be granted by the cmmittee fr a student t participate in an extra-curricular activity the same day. If it is discvered that a student participated in an extra-curricular activity and did nt attend schl fr at least fur (4) perids, the case will g befre the Standard f Excellence in the Perfrming Arts Review Cmmittee. Standards f Behavir: All Winter Park High Schl students are expected t display exemplary citizenship and behavir when participating in schl spnsred extra-curricular activities. These standards apply 24 hurs a day fr the duratin f an academic year, beginning with auditins. All schl rules as utlined in the Orange Cunty Cde f Student Cnduct and in this frm are t be fllwed. A student invlved in an extra-curricular activity will be ineligible fr rehearsal r perfrmance n any day if any f the fllwing cnditins exist: 1. A student is suspended frm schl by a schl administratr. 2. A student is remved frm an extra-curricular activity by the directr(s) f the activity (e.g. band, chrus, drama, rchestra, guitar). 3. A student is sanctined by law enfrcement utside f schl. (e.g. warrant, citatin, arrest). 4. A student exhibits behavir nt befitting the public face f the schl. Prcessing Reprts f Vilatins Reprts f alleged vilatins f the Standards f Excellence fr Participatin shall be made t any member f the Standard f Excellence in the Perfrming Arts Review Cmmittee. The cmmittee shall cnduct an investigatin t determine the validity f any allegatins. If it is determined that it is reasnable t believe a vilatin has ccurred, the student and his/her parents shall be ntified f the alleged vilatin, f the pssibility f extra-curricular sanctins, and f a right t a meeting with the Standard f Excellence in the Perfrming Arts Review Cmmittee. Here evidence may be presented; hwever, these meetings are nt frmal legal prceedings and are nt required t be cnducted in accrdance with the rules f prcedure nrmally assciated with frmal meetings r curt prceedings. The decisin f the Standard f Excellence in the Perfrming Arts Review Cmmittee is final and is nt subject t appeal. If it is determined that a student did cmmit a vilatin f the Standards f Excellence fr Participatin the sanctins shall be impsed immediately. FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS Band Fair Share ($300) The Band Fair Share pays fr virtually everything we d. Sme f ur largest expenses are staff, clinicians, instruments, and transprtatin f ur equipment t perfrmance sites. Other expenses include marching band drill writing, music purchases, shw and sund equipment, cmpetitin and Music Perfrmance Assessment (MPA) registratins, student awards, pst-cncert refreshments, and miscellaneus band supplies. The Band Fair Share is representative f the entire year as whle, nt just specific parts f the schl year. The payments are spread acrss much f the year t help alleviate the financial burden. Jazz Fair Share ($25/semester) The Jazz Fair Share is nly fr thse students wh are a part f ur Jazz Prgram. This fair share helps t ffset expenses fr new music, unifrms, transprtatin, and clinicians. It is brken up int tw payments ne fr each semester. Schl Instrument Maintenance ($60/semester) Each student wh uses a schl-wned instrument fr a will pay $60 per semester fr the maintenance f that instrument. Instruments used nly ccasinally at the discretin f the band directrs d nt incur a maintenance charge. N student will pay mre than $120 per schl year fr instrument maintenance. Unusual r extreme damage resulting in repairs r replacement will be the respnsibility f the student/parent. Marching Band Shes The purchase f marching band shes is nly needed fr new students, r when a student utgrws their shes. 4

Cncert Unifrm Beginning in the 2014-2015 schl year, the cncert tuxeds and dresses were nw prvided by the Band Prgram t all students. Students will still be respnsible fr the purchase f a tuxed shirt, black bw tie, and cummerbund (men), pearls (wmen), and black clsed te dress shes (men and wmen). The bw tie, cummerbund, and pearls are all purchased thrugh www.mybandstuff.cm. Guard Fair Share ($800) The Guard Fair Share pays fr virtually everything we d. Sme f ur largest expenses are staff and transprtatin f ur equipment t perfrmance sites. Other expenses include shw writing, music purchases, shw and sund equipment, cmpetitin registratins, equipment purchases, student awards, flags, rifles, and miscellaneus equipment. Fllwing the cmpletin f the marching band seasn in Nvember, the members f the Guard perfrm as the Winter Guard. Guard Unifrm Accessries Packages ($60/semester) This includes all f the unifrm accessry items fr use with the Clr Guard & Winter Guard glves, shes, etc. This is a $120 fee spread ver tw seasns ($60 fr fall/$60 fr winter). There is als the ptin f purchasing a Guard warm-up fr $60. Fundraising Credit / Band Accunts Fundraising credit is used like a cupn tward future Winter Park Band expenses. It is the respnsibility f the student and parent t mnitr their Charms accunt and be aware f fundraising credit available t them. Unused fundraising credit rlls ver t the next schl year. All mnies raised thrugh fundraising belng t the Winter Park Band Prgram and cannt be refunded fr any reasn. T assist with the financial requirements f being in the Winter Park Band Prgram, Band Credit accunts have been established fr each student. This credit is cnsidered part f the Band fund fr use by the students fllwing these cnditins: All credit raised thrugh Band fundraising belngs t the Winter Park Band Prgram and cannt be refunded fr any reasn. Band fundraising credit cannt be used t pay a financial bligatin t ther Winter Park (r OCPS) rganizatins (i.e. rchestra r ROTC). Any Band credit that remains in a graduating senir s accunt will be absrbed int the general fund upn cmmencement. Students wh leave the Band Prgram frfeit their accrued fundraising credit, even if they return in a future year. It is the respnsibility f the student and parent t mnitr their Charms accunt and be aware f utstanding balances. Past due Band Fees will result in the student being place n the schl s Obligatins List, which ptentially prevents them frm perfrming, btaining parking passes, prm tickets, and graduatin ceremny tickets. Excessive past due Band Fees may als prevent a student frm perfrming. If students r parents have any questins regarding their financial statement, please e-mail ur Band Treasurer, Mary Beth Jhnstn, at mbkjhnstn@gmail.cm. Feel free t cpy the Band directrs as well. ATTENDANCE Band members are required t attend all rehearsals and perfrmances. As a c-curricular curse, rehearsals and perfrmances utside f class time are part f the educatinal prcess, and are a graded cmpnent. An absence necessitates repeating educatinal instructin when the student returns, as well as eliminating the pprtunity t develp blend, balance, and precisin with the ther students in the ensemble. Equally as imprtant, students must be n time fr all Band functins. Learning t be early nw will establish a life skill that is critical t success beynd high schl. A cmplete Band calendar can be fund at www.winterparkhsband.cm. It is the respnsibility f bth the students and parents t be aware f Band events. EXCUSED ABSENCE FROM REHEARSAL Band members will nt be excused frm rehearsals except in cases f extreme emergency r illness. In these cases, a parent/guardian is required t submit an Absence Request Frm fund n the Band s website under Quick Links, r under Resurces > Frms. This Absence Request Frm is nly t be used fr REHEARSALS utside f the schl day (see belw regarding PERFORMANCES), and must be submitted within 1 week f an unanticipated absence. T be cnsidered fr an excused absence due t illness, there shuld als be dcumentatin frm a physician. If the student has an excused absence fr the schl day, an Absence Request Frm is nt necessary. 5

T be cnsidered fr an anticipated absence frm rehearsal, this frm must be submitted at least 1 week prir t that anticipated absence. Fr cnsideratin f an excused tardy, please check tardy, as ppsed t absence. Fr any absence r tardy, attach any additinal dcumentatin that wuld help clarify yur absence r tardiness (i.e. a nte frm anther teacher). Appintments, meetings, wrk, hmewrk, and vacatins, etc., will generally nt be valid excuses fr missing a rehearsal. Because f the missed material, excessive absences (excused r unexcused) may result in a student being placed n alternate status. UNEXCUSED ABSENCE FROM REHEARSAL Any student receiving an unexcused absence fr a rehearsal will receive a zer. Likewise, being tardy t a rehearsal will als result in a lwering f the verall grade based n the severity f the tardiness. An unexcused absence may result in the student being placed n alternate status. It is imprtant that an excused schl-day absence (i.e. illness) shuld be cmmunicated t the high schl Attendance Office as quickly as pssible. Unexcused schl-day absences result in a zer fr that day s rehearsal grade. It is the Attendance Office s plicy that parents submit a written ntice t excuse any absence. TARDY TO REHEARSAL/PERFORMANCE Attendance will always be taken prmptly at the beginning f a rehearsal r perfrmance. A student arriving late will lse pints twards their grade. If a student is habitually late fr rehearsals, they may be placed n alternate status and the apprpriate schl discipline plicies will be enfrced. Any student arriving late fr a ftball game perfrmance will lse their third-quarter break (Marching Band) and may frfeit the pprtunity t perfrm. ABSENCE FROM PERFORMANCE Perfrmances are a central fcus f the Band Prgram, and every student is bligated t attend every perfrmance. Severe persnal illness, death in the immediate family, and discretin f the directrs r building principal will be accepted as legitimate excuses if the directrs are ntified in advance by the parents/guardians. Please review the Band Calendar nline at www.winterparkhsband.cm and crdinate with yur family calendar. In the event that a student needs t miss a perfrmance fr any ther nn-emergency reasn, the parents/guardians must ntify bth directrs at least 60 days prir. BAND AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES With regard t extra-curricular activities (athletics, clubs, etc.): mst cnflicts between extra-curricular activities and Band can be avided, r alleviated, when pre-planning is dne, and advance ntice is given. It is critical fr students and parents t crdinate their extra-curricular activity s schedule with the Band calendar well in advance. When a cnflict is unavidable, the tw events will be weighted fr imprtance. Fr example, a Band perfrmance wuld utweigh an extra-curricular practice/rehearsal. A game wuld utweigh a Band rehearsal, etc. Again, cmmunicatin is critical t aviding cnflicts! ALTERNATE STATUS (MARCHING BAND) It is imperative that all members f the Sund f the Wildcats be present at all rehearsals and perfrmances. We understand that students get sick and that unfreseen emergencies may cme up, hwever, ur success as an rganizatin is dependent n attendance. Even ne persn missing frm a rehearsal r perfrmance affects all members. Each member is relied upn heavily t maintain their respnsibilities in the drill. We cannt imprve the shw r make changes when we have hles in ur drill at rehearsal. Hles at perfrmances drastically affect the cnfidence f the perfrming members arund that missing persn, which in turn affects the cnfidence f the entire ensemble. Everyne is imprtant! It is necessary t use alternates as part f the Sund f the Wildcats. Alternates are students that are members f the Sund f the Wildcats and the Winter Park Band Prgram, but d nt have a designated psitin in the shw fr ne r mre musical selectins. Students are placed n alternate status fr a number f reasns that may include: absence frm part r all f summer Band Camps, unexcused absence frm ne r mre rehearsals, frequent tardiness t rehearsals r perfrmance, r in turning in Band paperwrk and fees. Additinally, students wh are significantly behind n Fair Share payments may be placed n alternate status. Alternates are required t be at rehearsals and perfrmances, as mst f these students will perfrm at sme pint. Alternates are members f the Sund f the Wildcats and are therefre respnsible fr learned material. IB AND AP TESTING During the end-f-year IB and AP testing schedule, Band students are asked t be in rehearsal whenever the testing schedule allws. Due t a shrtened spring and an earlier end-f-schl release date, it is necessary fr sme perfrmances t fall within this time perid. 6

BAND ROOM AND REHEARSAL EXPECTATIONS There is t be n FOOD r DRINK in the Band Rm at any time. This includes backpacks and Band lckers. Water is always acceptable. Due t the many thusands f dllars f instruments and equipment in the Band Rm, nly current Band students are invited t be in the Band Rm at any time f day. Respect the prperty f thers. If it is nt yurs, d nt tuch it withut permissin f the wner! Instrument Lckers OCPS des nt have insurance t cver lst r stlen persnal prperty. Students are respnsible fr the cleanliness and safety f all items in their lckers. All students will receive a lcker with cmbinatin lck at the beginning f the schl year. These lcks belng t the schl, and lst lcks are $10.00 t replace. Keep yur lcker lcked at all times including during rehearsal and perfrmances. Fd r drink are nt permitted in the lckers r lcker rm at any time. Items that can be yur lcker include: instruments, music, mutes, marching clthes (during the fall), flip flders, and pencils. Failure t keep yur lcker clean may result in a lss f privileges namely, the privilege f having a lcker t use. The directrs reserve the right t enter any lcker as needed. Percussin equipment is t be used nly by percussinists, and all percussin equipment is t be cvered and rganized at the end f every rehearsal. Unless yu have specific permissin frm ne f the Band Directrs, nly percussinists are t be in the Percussin Strage Rm at any time. Cncert Rehearsals All cncert band and jazz band daily rehearsals begin 2 minutes after the tardy bell. Use f the restrm is t be dne prir t the tardy bell. With the new bell schedule, this gives yu 8 minutes t be ready and prepared fr class. If there is an emergency need fr the restrm during rehearsal, please ask a directr befre leaving. Every student must have their music, instrument, pencil, and all necessary equipment (i.e. reeds and mutes) at every rehearsal. This is part f yur daily rehearsal grade. A prfessinal rehearsal envirnment will be expected at all times. Please stay fcused n the task at hand! N gum chewing during any rehearsal (r in the Band Rm in general). A rehearsal utline will generally be psted n the Smart Bard at the beginning f the rehearsal. Please read it and be prepared befre the start f rehearsal! Percussin shuld check the bard as yu cme int the Band Rm s that the sectin may be prperly prepared. The nly materials allwed in the rehearsal area are yur instrument, music, pencil, and necessary equipment. Please leave cases, bks and/r backpacks arund the perimeter f the Band Rm. Marching Rehearsals Tuesdays: 2:45 PM 5:00 PM Wednesdays: 1:45 PM 5:00 PM All students are expected t keep up with any missed wrk and/r instructin. This includes learning (n yur wn time) any drill r music missed due t an absence. Because Mndays and Thursdays are free f rganized Marching Band rehearsals, it is highly recmmended that students use that time after schl t hld ccasinal sectinals, and fr individuals wh may have missed a marching band rehearsal t catch-up and review the wrk that was missed. Every student must have their music, instrument, pencil, dt card, and all necessary equipment (i.e. reeds) at every rehearsal, even if the student has everything memrized. This is part f yur daily rehearsal grade. A prfessinal rehearsal envirnment will be expected at all times. Please stay fcused n the task at hand! N gum chewing during any rehearsal. Rehearsal dress fr the Band shuld be apprpriate, cmfrtable clthing. Cmfrtable athletic shes and scks are a must fr every marching rehearsal. Students are required t have a cntainer f water (minimum f ½ galln) at all rehearsals. 7

PERFORMANCES The cmplete Band calendar fr the schl year can be fund at www.winterparkhsband.cm. In additin, infrmatin regarding these events will be included in the newsletters, psted n the bulletin bard utside f the Band Rm, and discussed during rehearsals. It is the student s respnsibility t stay infrmed and up-t-date n this infrmatin. The Band calendar des allw fr dwnlading int a mbile calendar (i.e. Ggle Calendar r ical), and it is recmmended that everyne d this (bth students and parents). Alng thse lines, students will be directed t sync the Band calendar t their schl-wned laptp devices during the first week f schl. Cncerts Unless stated therwise, the call-time fr any cncert will be 30 minutes prir t the cncert start-time. At that time, students shuld be fully dressed and ready t perfrm. Marching Band call-times will vary depending n the week s schedule. All Band students are required t attend all Band cncerts, even if they are nt perfrming (i.e. an injury preventing them frm perfrming). Ftball Games The Sund f the Wildcats perfrms at all varsity ftball games. The reprt time fr game days will vary depending n the schedule, and if it is away r hme. These reprt times will be annunced during rehearsal, psted in the newsletter updates, and listed n the Band bulletin bard. Students shuld usually plan n being available frm 5:00 PM nward fr games. The Band is generally the last grup n campus fllwing a ftball game, and the gates and building alarms cannt be secured until everyne has cleared the grunds. Please plan rides and pick-up times accrdingly. Students are asked t cntact their ride hme at the cnclusin f the game, and parents are asked t be punctual in picking up their child. All-State Band The All-State Bands are ensembles drawn frm the finest musicians in the state f Flrida. They perfrm at the Flrida Music Educatrs Assciatin (FMEA) cnventin in Tampa. Participatin in the All-State Band is a great hnr! In the past, Winter Park has prvided many f the All-State instrumentalists. All students are encuraged t auditin, and it is an expectatin fr all Wind Symphny members. Auditins are held in September each year. Auditin infrmatin is generally published in the early summer s that students may use the summer mnths t prepare. All-Cunty Band The OCPS All-Cunty Band takes place in late January, and is hsted here at Winter Park. Auditins are held in Nvember, and the auditin materials are taken frm the All-State technical etudes and scales. All Winter Park Band students are strngly encuraged t auditin fr All-Cunty, and it is an expectatin fr all Wind Symphny and Jazz Ensemble I members. Sl & Ensemble MPA The Sl & Ensemble MPA f the Flrida Bandmasters Assciatin is held in the early spring each year. The educatinal experience f preparing a sl r a chamber ensemble is invaluable, and it is the mst imprtant event f the schl year. In additin, the pprtunity t perfrm fr an audience and receive cnstructive cmments frm a qualified adjudicatr is a terrific learning experience. All Winter Park Band students are required t participate in the fficial district FBA Sl & Ensemble event, r, as an ptin, they may prepare a sl r ensemble t perfrm during the recitals in February. GRADING Grading is based n general rehearsal preparedness, perfrmances, and playing evaluatins, and the student s grade will be determined by a cmbinatin f pints that they have earned during the nine-week grading perid. Band students receive a grade fr each rehearsal and perfrmance, and they receive additinal grades based n daily participatin and playing evaluatins. Grading falls int three categries Rehearsal Preparedness; Playing Assessments; and Perfrmances. Playing Assessments and Perfrmances will be graded using an 11 0 pint system: 11 = A / 10 = A- / 9 = B+ / 8 = B / 7 = B- / 6 = C+ / 5 = C / 4 = C- / 3 = D+ / 2 = D / 1 = D- / 0 = F. Playing assessments can generally be re-taken fr a higher grade if dne prir t when that music is being perfrmed, r befre the end f the marking perid whichever cmes first. Students need t initiate a request t re-take an assessment with the Band Directrs. Students will receive 5 pints fr each rehearsal tward their Rehearsal Preparedness grade. Missed Perfrmance Make-Up Assignment If a student has an excused absence frm a perfrmance (i.e. wedding r family reunin), that perfrmance must still be made-up at the discretin f the directrs. As a cncert perfrmance represents weeks f hard wrk and preparatin, the make-up assignment shuld reflect the same effrt and attentin t detail. Make-Up Assignment Research ne f the pieces perfrmed (r a cmpser) within the past 2 years. Things t include: 1. Infrmatin abut the cmpser. 2. Elements f musical style, frm, meldy, rhythm r technique. 3. Histry f the piece. Did anther schl cmmissin it? Where was the first perfrmance? Was it influenced by anther piece f music, r anther style f music? Separate cver page with name, date, and missed perfrmance date. 10-page minimum (nt including cver page). Duble-spaced and 12-pint Times New Rman fnt. Students shuld be sure that all text is in their wn wrds and is edited fr sentence structure, punctuatin, etc. N graphics and/r pictures within the bdy f the paper. Be sure t present a clearly defined and well-researched tpic. All make-up assignments are due within ne week and ne schl day f the student s return t schl. Assignment may be submitted as a hardcpy, r e-mailed t Mr. Blackmer (Christpher.Blackmer@cps.net) AND Mr. Clemente (Michael.Clemente@cps.net) befre midnight n the due date. As a rule, extra-credit is nt ffered; hwever, students wh attend a musical perfrmance, and bring in a signed prgram, will receive extra pints added t their grade. Perfrmances culd include middle schl/high schl cncerts, prfessinal rchestras, etc. The signed prgram shuld be submitted n the next schl day after the perfrmance. The Cmmn Final Exam (CFE) fr Band is taken tward the end f the schl year. The test given is determined based n ensemble and the number f years in Band. It shuld be taken seriusly, as it represents 20% f the ttal final grade! 9
