Course Description: This is a basic course designed to enhance enjoyment and understanding of music for non-majors. No musical background is required. Musical elements will be introduced, as well as a survey of musical styles and masterpieces of Western music from the Middle Ages through to the present, with an emphasis on perceptive listening. Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Define and describe the basic elements of music, including rhythm, melody, harmony, form, timbre, texture, and expressive elements. 2. Identify compositional styles of major composers in Western music from the Middle Ages through the present. 3. Find a concert ensemble such as the San Fernando Valley Symphony at Pierce College, the New West Symphony or a musical at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Disney Hall or the Los Angeles Opera at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
