General Information The Pour-Thru Cell Kit is an optional accessory for the DR 5000 Spectrophotometer. The Pour-Thru cell improves measurement accuracy, as zeroing, measurements and measurement comparisons are carried out under the same optical conditions. As the samples all flow through the same cell, errors attributable to the different optical characteristics of individual cells are excluded. The Pour-Thru is designed to allow the samples to be introduced into the cell without having to handle the cell in any way. There are three types of Pour-Thru cells; a 1-inch cell, 1-cm cell and a 5-cm cell. Only the quartz cells (1 cm and 5 cm) can be used over the entire wavelength range. The 1-inch Pour-Thru cell can be used in the visible spectrum (340 to 900 nm). Specifications Specifications are subject to change without notice. Available path lengths Wavelength range Rinsing volume 1-inch or 1-cm or 5-cm 190 to 1100 nm 1-inch cell can only be used in the visible spectrum (340 to 900 nm) At least 20 ml for the 1-inch path length At least 10 ml for the 1-cm path length At least 20 ml for the 5-cm path length 1

Pour-Thru cell kit components Refer to Figure 1 and Figure 2 for a complete description of components supplied with the Pour-Thru cell kit. If any of these items are missing or damaged, refer to the manufacturer or a sales representative immediately. Note: Retain the original packaging materials. Returned instruments should be shipped in the original packaging material to protect against damage during transportation. Assembly Figure 2 Pour-Thru cell kit components 1 Stand assembly 3 Glass funnel 5 Pour-Thru cell 1-inch or 1-cm 2 Overflow tube assembly 4 Tubing (5 cm sold separately). The 1-inch cell is shown. The 1-inch Pour-Thru cell requires the use of a Pour-Thru cell adapter (Figure 1, item 3). The 1-cm and 5-cm cells use the multi-cell holder supplied with the DR 5000. Prepare the tubing and Pour-Thru housing 1. Cut the 182 cm (6 ft) length of clear tubing into two equal lengths of tubing, approximately 91 cm (3 ft) in length. 2. Feed both ends of the clear tubing through the two holes on the side of the housing, leaving approximately 20 cm (8 inch) inside the housing (Figure 3). 3. Resting the housing on its left side, remove the rubber fitting if installed. Route the external tubing through the channels molded into the exterior right side of the housing. Replace the rubber fitting (Figure 3). Important Note: Do not kink or bend the tubing sharply. 3

1-inch cell assembly Figure 3 Tubing installed in housing and channels with rubber fitting 1 Tubing (8 inside housing) 2 Rubber fitting 3 Tubing channels 1. Remove the multi-cell holder from the DR 5000 and replace it with the Pour-Thru cell adapter (Figure 1, Item 3). Do not screw down the Pour-Thru cell adapter. 2. Place the Pour-Thru module on top of the Pour-Thru cell adapter in the DR 5000. Make sure the locking screw holes are aligned. Secure the assembly with the two locking screws. 3. Clean the Pour-Thru cell with a lint-free cloth. Insert the Pour-thru cell with the barb fittings pointing left. 4. Route the tubing as shown in Figure 4 on page 5, trimming tube length as needed to achieve smooth curves with no kinks or sharp bends. 5. Assemble the stand and connect the tubing, noting flow direction arrows molded into the housing where the tubes emerge. The inflow tube is connected to the glass funnel; the outflow tube is connected to the overflow tube assembly (Figure 5 on page 5). 6. Connect the drain tube (black rubber tube) to the bottom fitting of the overflow tube assembly. Connect the other end of the drain tube to an appropriate waste vessel. The tubes can be shortened if necessary. 4

1-cm and 5-cm cell assembly 1. Arrange the multi-cell adapter so the appropriate cell holder for the Pour-Thru cell points towards the front of the instrument. Make sure the imprint of the cell type is visible. Do not screw down the multi-cell holder. 2. Place the Pour-Thru cell housing on top of the multi-cell holder in the DR 5000. Make sure the locking screw holes are aligned. Secure the assembly with the two locking screws. 3. Clean the Pour-Thru cell with a lint-free cloth. Insert the Pour-Thru cell in the cell holder so that the cell windows coincide with those of the cell holder. 4. Route the tubing as shown in Figure 6. Trim the tube length as needed to achieve smooth curves with no kinks or sharp bends. 5. Assemble the stand and connect the tubing, noting flow direction arrows molded into the housing where the tubes emerge. The inflow tube is connected to the glass funnel; the outflow tube is connected to the overflow tube assembly. 6. Connect the drain tube (black rubber tube) to the bottom fitting of the overflow tube assembly. Connect the other end of the drain tube to an appropriate waste vessel. The tubes can be shortened if necessary. 6

Cleaning the Pour-Thru cells Important Note: Do not use solvents (e.g. acetone) to clean the Pour-Thru cell. A dilute acid solution can be used for cleaning. Rinse thoroughly with deionized water. If windows are cloudy or soiled or bubbles form, add 50 ml of a detergent solution to the cell and wait for a few minutes to allow it to take effect. Then purge the cell thoroughly with distilled water. If necessary, the 1-inch Pour-Thru cell can be taken apart to be cleaned. Wipe the windows of the cell with a soft cloth only paper towels and other paper products may scratch the glass. Troubleshooting Carefully inspect clear tubing for kinks or sharp bends which may restrict the flow of liquid through the Pour-Thru cell. Use of the Pour-Thru cell Since there is a difference in the light path between the 1-inch square cells and the 1-inch Pour-Thru cell it is necessary to adjust the calibration slightly when using the 1-inch Pour-Thru cell. This is done by applying a dilution factor of 1.1 or performing a standard adjustment. The appropriately revised method can be stored as a user program. If the use of a Pour-Thru cell is prescribed in a Hach method, no adjustment is needed. Be sure to use the Pour-Thru cell that corresponds with the cell path length called for in the method. The 1-cm and 5-cm Pour-Thru cells should only be used with Hach methods that call for those specific cells or with user programs. Be sure to use the appropriate sample volume and reagents required for each particular cell. A 1-inch Pour-Thru cell can be used with a Hach method if the prescribed sample volume is 25 ml. If the prescribed sample volume is different than 25 ml, adjust the amount of sample and reagents as necessary to achieve the stated minimum rinsing volume (refer to Specifications on page 1). Although the Pour-Thru cell can be used for the Hach methods listed in Table 1, the cell must be thoroughly purged with distilled water between individual samples. Table 1 Pour-Thru cell methods that require purging Aluminum, Aluminon Chloride Dioxide, LR Cobalt, PAN Copper, Porphyrin Hardness, Calmagite Manganese, LR, PAN Nickel, PAN Nitrate, MR Nitrate, HR The Pour-Thru cell can also be used to run Nitrogen, Ammonia, Nessler Method and TKN chemistries. Clean the cell by pouring a few sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate crystals into the cell. Rinse out the crystals with deionized water. Important Note: The Pour-Thru cell cannot be used for the Hach methods listed in Table 2. Table 2 Hach methods that cannot be used with the Pour-Thru cell Aluminum ECR Arsenic Barium Boron, Carmine Cyanuric Acid Flouride Formaldehyde Lead, LeadTrak Mercury Nickel, Heptoxime Nitrite, HR PCB Phenols Potassium Selenium Silver Suspended Solids Sulfate TPH Volatile Acids Zinc Surfactants, Anionic (Detergents) 8
