What is foreshadowing? Defining and identifying foreshadowing using excerpts from The Ransom of Red Chief and The Monkey s Paw

What is foreshadowing? Foreshadowing is the use of clues by the author to prepare readers and build suspense by providing hints of what is to come.

What is the function of foreshadowing? Generally, the function of foreshadowing is to build anticipation in the minds of readers about what might happen next and thus adding dramatic tension to a story. It is deliberately employed to create suspense in mystery novels, usually by giving false clues or red herrings to distract readers.

How do authors do it? Foreshadowing can come in the form of descriptive detail, such as storm clouds on the horizon, (setting) bits of dialogue even in the names an author gives characters or titles/headings

Identify the sentence that foreshadows the character of Red Chief. One evening after sundown, we drove in a buggy past old Dorset s house. The kid was in the street, throwing rocks at a kitten on the opposite fence. Hey, little boy! says Bill, would you like to have a bag of candy and a nice ride? The boy catches Bill in the eye with a piece of brick. That will cost the old man an extra five hundred dollars, says Bill, climbing over the wheel.

Identify the sentence that foreshadows the kidnappers will agree to pay the ransom. What you getting up so soon for Sam? Bill asked. Me? says I. Oh, I got a kind of pain in my shoulder. I thought sitting up would rest it. You re a liar! says Bill. You re afraid. You was to be burned at sunrise, and you was afraid he d do it. And he would too, if he could find a match. Ain t it awful Sam? Do you think anybody will pay out money to get a little imp like that back home

Identify the sentence that foreshadows the type of events to come. If you don t want it, Morris, said the other, give it to me. I won t, said his friend doggedly. I threw it in the fire. If you keep it, don t blame me for what happens. Pitch it on the fire again like a sensible man. The other shook his head and examined his new possession closely. How do you do it? he inquired. Hold it up in your right hand and wish aloud, said the sergeant-major, but I warn you of the consequences.

Identify the sentence that foreshadows Herbert s fate. It moved, he cried, with a glance of disgust at the object as it lay on the floor. As I wished, it twisted in my hand like a snake. Well, I don t see the money, said his son as he picked it up and placed it on the table, and I bet I never shall. It must have been your fancy, father, said his wife, regarding him anxiously. He shook his head. Never mind, though; there s no harm done, but it gave me a shock all the same.

Identify the sentence with foreshadowing They sat down by the fire again. Outside, the wind was higher than ever, and the old man started nervously at the sound of a door banging upstairs. A silence, unusual and depressing settled upon all three, which lasted until the old couple rose to retire for the night. I expect you ll find the cash tied up in a big bad in the middle of your bed, said Herbert as he bade them goodnight, and something horrible squatting up on top of the wardrobe watching you as you pocket your ill gotten gains. He sat alone in the darkness, gazing at the dying fire, and seeing faces in it. The last face was so horrible and so simian that he gazed at it in amazement.
