THE FORMATION OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL PROFESSION THE ROLE OF INSTITUTIONS, 1780-1860 by Joseph F. Kett Mr. Kett examines medical licensing, education, organization, and sectarianism in five geographically representative states, evaluating their effectiveness in the context of a burgeoning democratic society. He finds that while medical institutions failed to serve their intended purpose, they ultimately provided a method for designating the orthodox practitioner and led to a change in popular attitudes and a demand for trained medical advisers. $6.50 BEYOND THE THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITY SOCIAL LEARNING AND SOCIAL PSYCHIATRY by Maxwell Jones Based in part on his experience as superintendent of a 400-bed psychiatric hospital, Dr. Jones gives the most detailed account available of the problems encountered in setting up a therapeutic community. His study shows how the social structure of a hospital intimately affects the caliber and success of treatment, $5.75 MEDICAL PRACTICE IN MODERN ENGLAND THE IMPACT OF SPECIALIZATION AND STATE MEDICINE by Rosemary Stevens "In this excellent book, Rosemary Stevens has by elaborate research provided... a dear and gracefully written account of the progressive ecology of medicine in Great Britain.... the very complete picture presented up to 1965 brings practical and philosophical questions to the forefront which are pertinent and critical to contemporary developments in medical service and education in other countries." Bulletin of the History of Medicine. $10.00 THE SHARING OF POWER IN A PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL by Robert Rubenstein and Harold D. Lasswell This study of the Yale Psychiatric Institute's effort to invite patients to participate with staff members in the decision-making process examines the impact of the innovation on all aspects of hospital life. "To those who work in therapeutic communities... this is a valuable book, probably one of the most valuable yet to have been written." British Hospital Journal and Social Science Review. $10.00 Yale University Press New Haven and London
