CDMMEA ALL-DISTRICT CONCERT & JAZZ BAND AUDITIONS FALL 2010 Directors, Here we go again... Most of us got together at the meeting in Linn back in August, and once again we owe thanks to Tom Higgins for the terrific annual feast. About the auditions: Remember that the auditions will take place at Camdenton High School on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. Your registration information MUST BE IN by Friday, October 8. We have intentionally made the deadline as close to the date as possible to facilitate greater accuracy. If you turn your entries in on time, you will receive not only a confirmation form on Monday, October 11, but also a printer-friendly invoice that will allow you to pay your tab (by cash or by purchase order) when you get here on the 12th. If you are late with your entries, we will still be able to squeeze your kids in, but you should be aware that I am a big fan of Cheeze-Its, Reese s Peanut Butter Cups, and Diet Coke - you know, if you want to grease the wheels, so to speak... Most of the information in here is either very similar or exactly the same as it has been for the past couple of years. Please, however, read over all this stuff to make sure you know what s going on. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions on any of this, or if you think I left something out. We ll see you on the 13th. Mike Fenn, Central District MMEA Instrumental Vice-President AUDITION MATERIALS CONCERT AUDITIONS ALL-STATE AUDITION MUSIC SET III All directors should have the cuts to this year s audition material. If you do not, please contact me at mfenn@camdentonschools.org. Also,.pdf files of the cuts should be available at cdmmeaband.wordpress. com. For the concert band, students will be required to play sections of three of the etudes, two major scales, and the chromatic scale. All major scales through four sharps and four flats should be prepared (and remember scales will be asked as starting pitch, NOT concert pitch). MINOR SCALES ARE NOT REQUIRED at District Auditions. JAZZ AUDITIONS Please refer to the Jazz Band audition packet provided by Jazz Vice-President Derek Limback.

CONCERT BAND AUDITION PROCESS Remember that all etude auditions are blind, but scale rooms are not. Judges may indicate instructions (starting and stopping points) to the student, either directly or through a room monitor. Auditioning students should not communicate with the judges. Music will be supplied in each room, but students are allowed and encouraged to bring their own music to the room for their audition. We are going to begin the evening with each student receiving a scheduled audition time. We understand that there are many events that may keep a student from keeping that audition time, but it should give us a good indication of when to expect rooms to close. Each audition will be allowed four (4) minutes. Percussion and jazz auditions will be allowed six (6) minutes to accommodate changes in setup. As of now, we plan on beginning all etude and jazz auditions between 4:00 and 4:30pm and ending by 6:30pm. If possible, we would like to try starting at least some of the scale rooms by 4:00. We then want to post results by 7:00 or 7:30pm. Each pre-registered student will be assigned an audition time and a random audition number. You will receive this information when you check-in. PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR STUDENTS TO VISIT THE SCALE ROOMS FIRST. Immediately after they perform their scales, have them report to their etude room. Students that are auditioning on more than one instrument should strive to complete all their auditions as early as possible. Please remind wind players that they MUST visit the scale room for EACH instrument on which they audition. Percussionists auditioning on more than one option however, need only perform the Multiple Percussion audition ONCE. Jazz Band and Concert Band auditions occur simultaneously. Please inform your students that we would like to be done with Jazz auditions by 6:30pm. Tell them to plan accordingly. We will once again be using computers to tabulate results. Also included is a copy of the audition adjudication form. Finally, please review the list of judging assignments included with this packet. If you are willing to judge, but did not sign up, please let me know and I will put you to work. PLEASE PLAN ON JUDGING SOMETHING... It is our plan, as of right now, to provide all folders and music to each band member before you leave at the end of the evening. If you need to leave before all results are finalized, the folders will be sent to you. FEES AND REGISTRATION The audition fee for both the Concert and the Jazz bands is $9.00 per audition. This means that if a student is auditioning on more than one instrument, percussion option, or for both the concert and jazz band, there is an audition fee assessed for EACH one. Pre-registration information for all auditions will be due on Friday, October 8. We have made the deadline later in the hopes of insuring greater accuracy in the initial registration process. IMPORTANT! Please strive to be as accurate as possible in your pre-registration. The information will be collected and put into our database on Sunday, October 10. From this information, we will be drawing up a confirmation letter for each school. Those confirmations will be emailed on the morning of October 11. If possible, please use the excel file I have sent you to complete your entries and invoice.

District Vice-Presidents will be in charge of collecting money and getting it to the Secretary/Treasurer. The following information will be on the invoice, but in case you need it in advance, please send all payments to: CDMMEA c/o Mike Fenn Assistant Director of Bands Camdenton R-3 School District PO Box 1409 Camdenton, MO MSHSAA EVENTS Please remember that this is a MSHSAA sponsored event. Note MSHSAA By-Law 103: No individual student, team, or activities group shall be permitted to participate in interscholastic events without being accompanied and supervised by a representative of the school faculty or administrative staff. A member of your school s faculty or administration must be present in order for your students to participate. No students will be allowed to check-in or audition until you or your designate has arrived. Also, the Missouri Music Educators Association eligibility statement for the All-State Band reads as follows: To be eligible to audition for and participate in an all-district/all-state group, a student must be a member of a corresponding high school performing group, if one exists. In other words, to audition for the All-District Band (and hopefully the All-State Band), the student MUST be a member of your school s band. If your student plans to audition for the All-State Orchestra, then he or she must be a member of your orchestra program, if you have one. Absence of a program at a school does not exclude a student from auditioning for a particular group. A representative from your school must be present to check-in your students and to receive your random audition assignments. This signature at check-in will be your affirmation that all your students are eligible under MSHSAA guidelines. CONCESSIONS The Camdenton Band Boosters will be running a modest concession stand at the auditions. At this time, we plan on selling sodas, candy and Papa John s Pizza.
