Q6 Does any of the above (from the entire survey) change if the student is planning to major in music in college? Answ ered: 96 Skipped: 8 6 4 2 Yes No Yes No 56.25% 54 43.75% 42 Total 96 # If Yes, please explain Date I think potential music students who have the opportunity to take music theory and/or music history courses absolutely should take those in high school. I also believe more in depth study of drum set and four-mallets should be expected (more than I checked in the survey). Lastly, as many performance opportunities as possible should be encouraged for potential music majors. 2 Everything picked should stay the same, but more emphasis would be placed on the topics specifically for the music-pursuing students. 3 Those who are NOT planning to major in music do NOT need to become complete scholars of the instrument in order to reap the benefits of performing. Music is too intensive to study it at the music major level AND study instensively their own career interests. 4 More solo opportunities, advanced repertoire and teaching topics, etc. should be explored for college-bound music major 5 Students planning to major in music should naturally strive to distinguish themselves from the rest of the class. These students are the ones who want to push themselves to be the very best that they can be. 6 Encourage student to continue improving on all aspects, especially continue growing in other fields of percussion. Focus on technique and sight reading improvement with daily practice. Acquire a daily practice routine outside of the classroom setting. 2/9/23 5:58 PM 2/7/23 3:9 PM 2/2/23 :5 AM 2/8/23 5:3 PM /25/23 2:2 PM /23/23 3:9 PM 7 If the student wants to major in music they should set higher goals and standards. /23/23 2:38 PM 8 I so, they should take the time to become more familiar with more orchestral excerpts as well as solos in snare, marimba, and timpani 9 I would think it would change, but solely on the student. I believe with this foundation, a future music major would explore more on his own without me requiring it. /22/23 9:42 PM /22/23 7:3 PM 7 / 24

My answers are to one who plans to major. Some things are left out that may be major specific but I believe this covers a broad overview of all percussion majors w/emphasis If a student is NOT going to major in music, perhaps he or she does not need to meet these standards quite at this level. But to be competitive in high school (make All-State, regional youth orchestras, etc.) these are the expected skills. /2/23 6:45 PM /2/23 6:4 PM 2 More scales and more difficult music/solos etc /2/23 2:2 PM 3 I answered based on a student expecting to major. Students not planning to major could potentially specialize in an area of interest and not have as broad of a base. 4 As far as solo performing goes, it is a good experience, but it should not be a requirement. Some students play because they enjoy their playing instruments, but the idea of playing soloistically might scare them away from music entirely. All these questions are valid, but often if high school band directors are not percussionist, I doubt they can even successfully play what I believe should be standard teaching practice - that being said, most of these goals would have to be accomplished via private instruction. 5 Should build piano skills privately and should work on music theory possibly in on line course. Most high school students do not have the space in scheduling to add these type courses above graduation requirements 6 Depending on the focus of the major - if the focus is Jazz Studies, obviously the student should have improv knowledge and know how to read chord symbols and read drum charts. 7 They should understand and be able to perform all of the classic percussion instruments on a beginning/intermediate level. /7/23 :4 AM /6/23 5:48 PM /5/23 8:5 PM /5/23 5:37 PM /4/23 7:2 PM 8 basic drum set skill. Better understanding of theory. all major/minor scales. 6/7/23 :56 AM 9 A music major should do their best to prepare as much as possible. The more prepared student can make better informed choices about music as a career. 6/8/23 5:59 AM 2 Having more of the academics down. 6/4/23 5:33 PM 2 Knowledge of these items would benefit a future music major, but would really have much less impact on someone who only participated through high school: music theory aural skills music history orchestral excerpts all of the scales (as opposed to half) all of the rudiments (as opposed to half or a few) world drumming jazz advanced literature 22 If the student wants to major in music at a collegiate level, more emphasis should be placed on learning scales and being able to sight read. Students should know all 4 rudiments. Also, the student should be expected to play more advanced literature across the board, especially on keyboards. The student should have at least a passing familiarity with reading jazz chords, and have basic drum set abilities as well. Jazz experience would be encouraged. 23 Depending on what they want to study in college, they should do some independent study on subjects that they cannot take in high school. 24 They should know or be able to perform more advanced literature, and should know more fundamentals such as scales and rudiments. 25 If the student is planning on majoring in music, all expectations should be shifted up at least one level. As much exposure and preparation as possible is necessary! 26 If a student is planning on majoring in music in college, then perhaps an added focus on orchestral excerpts would be good, particularly if they want to be a performance major. 27 With the music major plan, the student should pursue piano studies and extra experiences in musical performance (chamber music, world music) and aural skills. Further (intermediate/advanced) studies in 4-mallet keyboard would be beneficial. 28 More literature studied on timpani and four-mallets. Higher expectation level for concert snare drum. 29 Students majoring in music should be expected to have an advanced understanding of all the instruments/genres you mention above. In addition, future music majors should be exposed to more advanced repertoire and techniques, including 4-mallet playing. 5/3/23 :47 PM 5/29/23 5:59 PM 5/29/23 3:6 PM 5/29/23 2: PM 5/29/23 :5 AM 5/26/23 8:29 AM 5/6/23 3:2 PM 4/28/23 9:24 PM 4/9/23 7:52 AM 3 Not all are availble in our curriculum. We encourage on line augmentation. 4/8/23 8:27 PM 8 / 24

3 Generally speaking, all questions would be answered up to the next level of expectations. 4/7/23 2:46 PM 32 add the other to his studies 4/7/23 :8 PM 33 The expectation of a student who is going to audition as a music major should be higher. I think all perc students should be able to demonstrate, at least minimally, all of the check marked items. Serious students wanting to audition need a deeper understand of each of the items. 4/7/23 2:46 PM 34 Classical music history and piano skills would enable the student planning on a music major. 4/7/23 :57 AM 35 Lot of grey here. 4/7/23 2:32 AM 36 Music theory 4/6/23 5:4 PM 37 Maybe advance the student more with regard to some of the academics and more advanced techniques and literature. 4/6/23 4:27 PM 38 Competence should be at least one level higher in every aspect. 4/6/23 3:26 PM 39 Than they need to be in private instruction and work on a much more advanced level in all areas 4/6/23 3:22 PM 4 Students with musical futures should take everything to the next level. A heavier load of theory and ear training with some history/piano. 4 Students planning on studying Music should seek out more that the basic music education, but a student should be able to start in a Music program without any real problems. (ie: can't read pitches on a staff, or no experience on basic percussion instruments like Timpani, Bells, Xylophone, Cymbals, etc.) 42 Prospective music majors are encouraged to take lessons privately, audition for drum major/section leader positions, and play more advanced music for Solo and Ensemble events. 43 Some students should have and will adapt more quickly to a focused area of study, knowing that they will prgress further in the field. Others who don't plan on proceeding in percussive arts would likely not be willing to put in the extra time to study the aforementioned areas, as it bears no weight on their future studies. 44 Maybe have an in-depth more analysis for those wanting to major in Music. Or, have them on a different level of difficulty. 45 In most cases I would expect students planning to major in music to exceed these expectations in most or all categories. 4/6/23 3:6 PM 4/6/23 2:5 PM 4/6/23 2:43 PM 4/6/23 2:3 PM 4/6/23 2:29 PM 4/6/23 :8 PM 46 Greater depth in all areas. More theory, more 4 mallet, more drum set 4/6/23 9:4 AM 47 Four mallets should be know more advanced Timpani and snare drum 4/6/23 9:3 AM 48 Teacher should tailor fit the curriculum for the student. If a student will be a percussion major in college then the standard for reading must be elevated. 4/5/23 :2 PM 49 All should be checked for music college bound students. 4/5/23 5:34 PM 5 If a student is planning for college level studies, all activities during high school should be performed and executed at a high level. More attention to performance and technical detail should be considered. 4/5/23 4:3 PM 5 If planning to major in music, studies should move from beginning to at least intermediate. 4/5/23 4: PM 52 I would expect more from those students. 4/8/23 :53 AM 53 If so, they should be looking into maybe a little more advanced repertoire for their audition on 4 mallets and snare. Better sight-reading skills are also an advantage. If the school offers it, Music Theory is a great idea because it covers subjects throughout Theory & 2 in college. 4/3/23 :5 AM 54 Basic aural skills 4/3/23 9:4 AM 9 / 24

Q2 Please add any comments about this survey topic that you feel are appropriate. Answ ered: 6 Skipped: 9 # Date I teach and have a family. There is not appropriate time to perform. 2/2/23 :6 AM 2 The student determines how good they will be. All we can do as educators is plant the seed; it is up to the student to take what we have given and make it flourish. 3 All it takes to be a music major is to have the right attitude, be dedicated, and be prepared to work really hard. Take it seriously, practice practice practice, really focus on your studies and you will do fine. /22/23 7:33 PM /22/23 6:4 PM 4 Where will the results be posted? Hope to read about this in a future PAS article! /2/23 6:2 PM 5 I am training to become an educator, so if the above numbers included teaching, it would be much different. /6/23 5:5 PM 6 Good survey, Doc. 5/3/23 :47 PM 7 I function as an educator in percussion, not a performer. 4/8/23 8:29 PM 8 Thank you for putting on this survey. 4/7/23 2:48 PM 9 I am not sure what you are trying to figure out about how percussion is taught but with out a private lesson program most percussion learn in a full band setting. 4/6/23 3:24 PM dooty 4/6/23 3:8 PM Please give us back the finished feedback. Thanks. Chris Bayless, Morehouse Parish Bands 4/6/23 2:53 PM 2 I do not see how the amount of money earned performing is pertinent. "Primary Occupation: performer, teacher, private lessons" may work better? 3 Music literacy (the ablility to simply read music) seems to be the biggest concern amongst a lot of college percussoin instructors that I have communicated with over the past four years. It is getting harder and harder to fine percussionist you have the basic reading skills that is necessary at the high school level, let alone the college level. 4 It is a good idea to compare and contrast the different levels of Percussion in Education. There are many different levels that vary within a school district, or in other schools. 5 I feel my answers were based on what should be the basic knowledge for a percussionist. More should be known, but it really depends on the programs of study offered at their school and if private lessons are available. 6 I teach at a mid-sized state institution, with a strong music technology department. Students auditioning for admission to pursue a music degree come from a wide demographic, including participation in a 4-year high school band program, and as diverse as being self-taught. We have very few orchestras in our region, so my focus tends to be more general in nature, therefor the audition requirements for entrance are more general in nature. 4/6/23 2:45 PM 4/6/23 2:44 PM 4/6/23 2:3 PM 4/6/23 9:32 AM 4/6/23 8:55 AM 24 / 24
