Notes Stormbreak was written to be a sort o sequel to Technology - another moderately sile ercussion ensemble or eight layers. When I irst wrote Technology, I had no intentions o ublishing it, nor did I exect it would eventually become as oular as it has. Stormbreak oens with a collection o natural eect sounds the ocean drum, swirling shakers, and rainstick. As these die out, the storm breaks and a rhythmic ti o the hat, to Technology kicks in on the rim o the snare drum. As rhythmic elements layer in, the motive o Stormbreak becomes clear and will continue to make itsel known throughout the iece. Utilizing requent reeats in most arts, it oers a great way or young, intermediate layers to become more comortable with the concet o grooving in their own art while lacing that groove within the mix o their ellow groove-laying coadres. This is a more challenging skill or younger layers to latch onto since they can oten get wraed u in reading the notes on the age, just trying to lay arts correctly. My hoe is that once layers are comortable with their own arts, they can branch out rom the rinted age a bit, and ocus their attention more on hearing how their arts mingle with others. I all layers can do this, the various syncoated elements o the iece will come together nicely to orm a solid groove and, most likely, a catchy showiece that audiences will love. Stormbreak was written or the Lanier Middle School ercussion ensemble and syhonic band under the direction o Hunter McRae. It remiered to a large audience at the University o eorgia Middle School Festival in 2007 where it received a roaring resonse. This iece can stand alone as a ercussion octet, but it s also written with the otion o being layed by a ull wind ensemble. During wind ensemble concerts, the ercussion section can sometimes be relegated to the back, not always articiating as much as wind layers. So this otion acts as something o a ercussion ensemble eature to be rogrammed into wind ensemble concerts. I chosing to erorm this as a wind ensemble iece, there are a variety o eect elements that wind layers are called uon to erorm. For starters, the oening storm can be erormed by as many layers in the ensemble as you d like by distributing ocean drums, egg shakers, and rainsticks throughout the ensemble. I you don t have an abundance o ocean drums, you might consider abricating some using two large drumheads with some buckshot inside, then sealing them together with some tae. Use as many rainsticks as you can get your hands on. Perhas using some subtle wind chimes can hel set the mood. These sounds can even begin long beore the iece starts while the ercussionists are inalizing their setu. At various oints, wind layers are asked to make clicking sounds by taing on the keys o their instruments. At the start o the iece, these sounds should simulate the random itter-atter o rain alling. The more random, the better. Since this is a subtle eect, exeriment with instruments to ind techniques that roduce the most sound. Taing valves and keys can create an interesting texture i done by several eole. You may even try lightly taing on the bells o the larger brass instruments with ingernails. Be creative! Later in the iece (rehearsal F), the taing comes back, but this time it is to be erormed rhythmically to accoany the ercussion solos. This is ollowed by some call-and-resonse between hand clas and oot stos. Again, strive to create the most sound ossible or the greatest eect. This olio actually contains two scores. The irst is the ull score or winds and ercussion. At the conclusion o that is a ercussion score with wind staves omitted. The ercussion arts are identical in both scores. Only the ormatting is dierent. -Jim Casella
Instrument/Parts list Stormbreak can be erormed as a ercussion octet, or otionally as a ercussion eature with wind ensemble. The ercussion ensemble requires the ollowing instruments. Player 1 - glockensiel, bongos Player 2 - xylohone, congas Player - chimes, rainstick, vibra sla, susended cymbal, mounted inger cymbal, woodblock Player 4 - tiani (lus cymbal or oening eect) Player 5 - snare drum, brake drum Player 6-4 concert toms, hihat, ocean drum, cowbell Player 7 - tambourine, triangle, shaker, slash cymbal, china cymbal Player 8 - bass drum (with towel attached or quick changes rom muled to unmuled) I erorming Stormbreak with a wind ensemble, the ollowing arts are included. Please note, there is only one art er instrument, but some contain divisi arts which should be divided within sections accordingly. Also, i an ensemble doesn t have certain instrumentation (such as the contrabass clarinet or basson), it won t harm the eect o the iece to leave them out. lute oboe clarinet (Bb) bass clarinet (Bb) contrabass clarinet (Eb) bassoon alto saxahone tenor saxahone baritone saxahone truet (Bb) rench horn (F) trombone baritone tuba
