Applied Violin Principal/Major Syllabus Fall 2016 MUS 153, MUS 353, MUS 357, MUS 553 Dr. Ching-Yi Lin FAC 325, (270)745-5939 ching-yi.lin@wku.edu Office Hour: By appointment The Violin Studio The primary objective of these lessons is to facilitate the maximum advancement of your performing ability. This is accomplished by studying instrumental principles, learning etudes/studies, and major works for the violin. I support you to take responsibility for your learning so that your can grow intellectually, emotionally, and musically, with the goal to sustain yourself autonomously outside of my WKU studio. I encourage you to show support for your studio mates, attend each other s lessons, and participate in masterclasses to gain performing experience. You will address me as Dr. Lin. You might hear others address me differently, but you are to address me as Dr. Lin. Course Description Violin lessons include: Attending private lessons, scale/technique classes, masterclasses with WKU guest faculty, and 1 short paper Metronome: BOSS DB- 90 metronome A video camera Required Equipment Bring both your metronome and camera with you to every lesson. Students are required to augment their lessons by making video recordings of both lessons and practice times and taking the time to view the recordings regularly. Required Music Carl Flesh Scale System Schradieck School of Violin Technics Book 1 Kreutzer 42 Etude Bach 6 Violin Sonatas and Partitas * Other material will be assigned to each individual student (concerto/showpiece) Masterclass/Technique class Masterclass are held on Wednesdays 5pm in FAC 319 (location may change depending on recital hall availability). You will be informed if you are performing in the class.

Friday, January 27th, 8:00 pm Van Meter Hall PRISM CONCERT 2017 Wednesday, 2/15 Anyango Yarbo-Davenport Violin Masterclass in FAC 319 March 1 to March 4 th : ASTA Conference, I will be in Pittsburgh, PA Saturday, 4/8 Faculty Piano Quartet Recital, FAC RH 4PM Masterclass Presentation A brief presentation of your piece is required prior to you performance in masterclass. The outline should include (but not limited to): date of composition, instrumentation, significant recordings, and historical background of the piece and composer. You are to discuss and turn in your outline to me one week prior to your masterclass performance. Short paper You are required to write a 250-word short paper about an assigned masterclass/ event/concert. The assignment is to be turned in one week after the event. To be included in this paper: date of event, performers, pieces, reflection on the performance, and any interesting observation that you would like to include. Your grade will be deducted one point for every day that it is late. Tardy You are to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to all masterclasses, rehearsals, and lessons. If you arrive more than 10 minutes late for a lesson without contacting me, I will assume it is a missed lesson and will not be required to wait for you or make up the lesson. Grading Policy Grading will be based on individual progress made during the semester on the goals state above. Break down of grades: 100 points total 90-100 points Letter A Grade 80-90 points Letter B Grade 70-80 points Letter C Grade 60-70 points Letter D Grade 2

60 and below Letter F Grade 14 lessons: 70 points (earn up to five points for each lesson) Requirements for 5 points Ø Punctual attendance at private lessons and master classes (average of 5 points earned for lesson) Ø Interpretive realization and thorough memorization of all selected repertoire Ø Exemplary performance execution Ø Understanding of good practicing habits Requirements for 4 points Ø Good attendance at private lessons and master classes (average of 4 points earned for lesson) Ø Thorough memorization of at least two complete works Ø Adequate performance execution Ø Development towards positive practice habits Requirements for 3 points Ø Tardy attendance at private lessons and master classes Ø No performances for masterclasses Ø Poor attendance to group classes Ø Lackadaisical preparation of selected repertoire Ø Careless and unconvincing performances Requirements for 2 points or below Ø Poor attendance Ø Ill prepared Guest Artist masterclasses: 8 points 2 masterclasses of 4 points each Class and Concert Attendance: 12 points 2 concerts of 6 points each 250 article about an assigned event: 10 points This assignment is to be turned in one week after the assigned event Disability Students with disabilities who require accommodations (academic adjustments and/or auxiliary aids or services) for this course must contact the Office for Student Disability Services, DUC A-200.
