Curriculum Standard One: The student will use his/her senses to perceive works of art, objects in nature, events, and the environment. 1. The student will analyze the aesthetic qualities of his/her own artworks and the work of others and refine his/her own artworks. understanding of works in ceramics by analyzing what the artist presents in visual form? The student will identify how an artist used the visual language of art (the elements of art and the principles of design) to convey ideas, feelings, and emotions. 2. The student will analyze and synthesize the underlying structures and functions of the environment and events and apply a high level of original thinking to produce artworks. understanding of the relationship between the environment and events and how these are synthesized and built into artworks? By drawing sketches of his/her projects relating to proportion and scale, the student will compare or contrast two and three-dimensional art. By creating a textural tile from objects in his/her environment, the student will apply perceptual skills to increase his/her understanding of objects found in nature. After drawing sketches of various possibilities, the student will choose the best solution for his/her projects. 1

Curriculum Standard Two: The student will identify visual structures and functions of art, using the language of the visual arts. 1. The student will comprehend the aesthetics of perception through the use of the visual arts vocabulary. 2. The student will discriminate among a variety of visual structures and functions to perceive commonalties and differences. 3. The student will create ceramic works that demonstrate his/her observations and perceptions of the visual characteristics of the world. A. Can the student demonstrate knowledge and understanding of visual arts vocabulary? A. After viewing a variety of ceramic objects, can the student find and discuss common attributes among them? A. Can the student create ceramic works of art from his/her observations which demonstrate knowledge of the language of the visual arts? After viewing a wide variety of ceramic objects, the student will analyze similarities and differences in class discussion using specific ceramic vocabulary. After viewing a variety of ceramic objects, the student will write comparative essays discussing common attributes and differences using appropriate ceramic vocabulary. The student will create ceramic artworks which address a specific stylistic and technical process. 2

Curriculum Standard Three: The student will develop knowledge of and artistic skills in a variety of visual arts media and technical processes. 1. The student will use the elements of art and principles of design across a variety of ceramic processes. 2. The student will solve visual arts problems in three-dimensional media. understanding of the art elements and principles of design using a variety of ceramic techniques in his/her ceramic artworks? A. Can the student create three-dimensional ceramic artwork based on study and analysis of the elements of art and principles of design, which the student incorporates into his/her own personal expressions? The student will demonstrate basic handbuilding techniques (pinch, coil, and slab) through a series of intermediate projects. The student will create geometric sculptures using handbuilding or wheel throwing techniques. Through glazing his/her projects, the student will exhibit the variety of methods of glazing which enhances surface quality. 3

Curriculum Standard Four: The student will create original artworks based on personal experiences or responses. 1. The student will create ceramic artworks communicating specific ideas. A. Can the student demonstrate the ability to effectively use elements of art and principles of design in his/her ceramic artwork in the solving of an art problem? The student will demonstrate an appropriate level of control and craftsmanship in at least five ceramic techniques. The student will select his/her ceramic artworks to include in a portfolio and will critique his/her work using appropriate ceramic vocabulary. 4

Curriculum Standard Five: The student will develop skills in visual arts and appreciation for using the visual arts in lifelong learning. 1. The student will analyze and discuss the ways in which his/her own work, and that of others, use media effectively to translate ideas, feelings, and values into visual statements of aesthetic merit. B. Can the student analyze and discuss his/her ceramic artworks and the works of others? The student will critique his/her work and work of others both orally and in written form. 5

Curriculum Standard Six: The student will explore the role of the visual arts in culture and human history. 1. The student will gain an understanding of artworks from a variety of cultures by describing the roles that specific artworks play in those societies. understanding that the visual arts and artists reflect, play a role in, and influence culture? The student will discuss the purpose(s) of ceramics from major time periods and cultures from early man to the present. The student will research the ceramic traditions of his/her cultural or ethnic origin as a basis for the creation of a ceramic work that reflects his/her heritage. 6

The student will identify, describe, interpret, and analyze stylistic elements of specific themes and ideas in a variety of cultures from art historical periods. understanding of major ceramic art traditions and styles in a variety of times and places? The student will write a composition or journal entry demonstrating an understanding of a selected historical period or style of art. The student will analyze specific characteristics of artwork in various cultures. 7
