Science Museum of Minnesota Omnitheater Social Narrative 1

General Expectations I will use my indoor voice when I am in the exhibit galleries and the Omnitheater. I will walk while I am in the museum. I will stay with my group while I explore the exhibits. I will take turns and share the exhibits with other people. 2

Do You Offer Noise-Dampening Headphones? The Science Museum does have noise dampening headphones to offer visitors on a first-come, first-served basis. Please speak to a staff member about borrowing a pair for your visit. 3

Level 5: I will have my ticket scanned I will go to the Omnitheater Main Entrance on Level 5. I will hand my ticket to a staff member to scan it. I can wait in line in the Omnitheater Lobby. If I wish to avoid waiting in line or avoid using stairs, I can go up to the Level 6 Omnitheater Entrance (please see page 15). I can ask a staff member for directions. 4

Level 5: Waiting in line While I wait in line, I can go up to the glass booth and watch the projectionist load the film. I can watch science news stories on the monitors from KARE 11 News. I can try using a green screen just like weather forecasters on TV. 5

Level 5: Restrooms Restrooms are located on the sides of the striped carpet. The Men s restroom is on the left. The Women s restroom is on the right. I can use these restrooms even when the stanchions are closed. Both restrooms have manual-flushing toilets. The Men s restroom has automatic-flushing urinals. Both restrooms have automatic-sensing faucets, soap dispensers, and paper towel dispensers. 6

Level 5: Entering the Omnitheater When it is time to go into the Omnitheater, a staff member will open the stanchions for me. I will follow the striped carpet toward the projection booth. As I approach the projection booth, I can turn LEFT or RIGHT. I will walk to the door marked ENTRANCE. 7

Level 5: Entering the Omnitheater As I enter the Omnitheater, the light levels will be low and colorful. I will see blue lights on the floor. I will follow the blue lights around to the steps at the front of the theater. Above me is the large, blue dome screen. I will walk carefully up the stairs to find a seat. 8

Finding my seat If I wish to be fully immersed in the movie, I can sit in the lower deck. If I experience motion sickness, I can sit high up in the upper deck. 9

Finding my seat The Omnitheater has reserved seating on the mid-deck. If I wish to sit here, I can ask a staff member if a reserved seat is available. The mid-deck also has two exits on either side of the theater. I can use these exits at any time during the movie to use the restroom or to leave the theater. 10

I can watch the dome screen rotate Four minutes before the show begins, I can watch the dome screen rotate slowly into position. I will hear a few loud bangs from the large arms on either side of the theater. The dome screen will set down in front of me. Sometimes the dome screen will already be down when I enter. An announcement will play and ask me to silence my cell phone. Then the movie will begin. 11

Exiting after the movie has finished I can use the exits on the mid-deck to exit the Omnitheater after the movie. I will follow the exit signs through the double doors. If I wish to return to Level 5, I will turn left and walk across the balcony. I will see the sign: Riverway Elevators to Lobby. 12

Exiting after the movie has finished I can use the stairs to return to Level 5. Or I can use the elevators to return to Level 5. The Exhibits Entrance is on Level 5. 13

Thanks for visiting! Feedback about this social narrative is welcome! Please contact Ana Kaveh at akaveh@smm.org with suggestions, comments, or questions. 14

The next pages are about entering the Omnitheater using Level 6. 15

I can go up to Level 6 to avoid waiting in line After my ticket is scanned, I can turn around and walk toward the roaring polar bear by the Explore Store. I can use the Musical Stairs that are beside the roaring polar bear to go to Level 6. Or I can use the elevators located behind me to go Level 6. 16

Level 6: Entering the Omnitheater When I arrive to Level 6, I will look left and follow the Omnitheater Exit sign. I will walk across the balcony and under the colorful Elements Cafe sign. I will look for the Omnitheater Exit sign and enter the Omnitheater Level 6 lobby through the open double doors. 17

Level 6: Entering the Omnitheater I can sit in a chair while I wait for a staff member to say it is okay to enter the Omnitheater. I can use the restrooms on either side of the Lobby. After a staff member tells me I can enter the Omnitheater, I can enter on the left or right. 18

Level 6: Restrooms Restrooms are located each side of the lobby. The Women s restroom is on the left. The Men s restroom is on the right. I can use these restrooms at any time during the movie. Both restrooms have manual-flushing toilets. The Men s restroom has automatic-flushing urinals. Both restrooms have automatic-sensing faucets, soap dispensers, and paper towel dispensers. 19

Entrance Finding my seat When I enter the Omnitheater, the lights will be low and colorful. The Omnitheater has reserved seating on the mid-deck. I can ask a staff member if reserved seats are available. I can leave the Omnitheater from where I came at any time during the movie to use the restroom or to leave the theater. 20
