The Hampshire County Waite Family 1. (---) 1 Waite. He married unknown. Children of (---) Waite were as follows: + 2 i William 2 Waite. 3 ii [Martin] 2 Waite, born 1742. He married in 1760/69 Anne Ingrahm, born 1 10 Jun 1744. Martin was in South Hadley 1790 as was his apparent brother William (JAW) Generation 2 2. William 2 Waite (---) 1, born 2, 3, 4 1738 probably in Hampshire Co., MA; died 5, 6, 7 1797 in Cockburn's Gore, Delaware, NY. He married (1) 8 Mary (---), died 9, 10, 11 29 Aug 1765 in South Hadley, Hampshire, MA; (2) 12 in 1765/70 Sarah Ingrahm, born 13 28 Sep 1745; died 14, 15 10 Aug 1837 in Charlotte Center, Chautauqua, NY; buried 16, 17 in Evergreen Cemetery, lot 204, Sinclairville, Chautauqua, NY. Came to South Hadley circa 1740-1750 and residing there 1790. JAW states that he has not yet found proof that William is the father of his Adin Wait. However, the fact that A History of Delaware County states that Adin and William were early settlers at "Cockburns Gore" and that William Wait was the first death there seem conclusive to him. Also William's second wife Sarah is buried in Adin's lot in Sinclairville Cemetery. Additionally, he found that William and his first wife Mary had a son Adin d. 1772 at S. Hadley. It does seem likely that they would name a younger son Adin as well. Members of the First Church of South Hadley. (JAW) Children of William Waite and Mary (---) were as follows: 4 i Adin 3 Waite, born 18, 19 9 Jun 1760 in South Hadley, Hampshire, MA; died 20 5 Jul 1772 probably in South Hadley, Hampshire, MA. 1 JAW - Records of James A. The Hampshire County Waite Family page 5 moving to Sinclairville. He was a blacksmith. The Will of Adin Wait I Adin Wait of the town of Charlotte, in the County of Chautauqua & State of New York, of the age of sixty eight years [ ], considering the uncertainty of this mortal life, & being of sound mind & memory, do make publish & ordaine this my last will & testament, in manner following that is to say: I give & bequeath to my wife Tabitha Wait, all my household furniture, beds, bedding, wearing apparel, & all other my household goods of every name & description whatever. I give & devise to my son George E. Wait, all the real estate which I own, in the Town of Charlotte, consisting of about one hundred & sixteen acres, being the north part of that...thirty six acres in the Town of Stockton...these parcels of land are particularly described in two deeds from the Holland Land Company to me bearing the dates as follows; the one describing the lands lying in the Town of Charlotte, is dated September 29th 1835...the one describing the land lying in the Town of Stockton is dated February 14th 1837... I give and bequeath to my son George E. Wait all the rest residue & remainder of my personal estate...to my son Adin Wait Jr... I also give and devise to my daughter Abigail Woodcock, wife of Charles Woodcock 26 acres of land lying in the Town of Stockton...particularly described in a deed from Welthy Windsor to me, bearing the date December 30th, 1844...and ten acres...particularly described in two deeds of conveyance, the first from Charles Woodcock to me bearing date September 1st 1836 and the other from Washington Windsor & his wife, bearing date the 18th day of May 1837... I also give and bequeath to my son William D. Wait, the sum of four hundred dollars... I also give & bequeath, to my daughter Abigail Woodcock, wife of Charles Woodcock...the sum of twenty-five dollars... I also give & bequeath to my daughter Amanda Sisson, wife of John Sisson the sum of two hundred & fifty dollars... I also give & bequeath to my daughter Emma Forbush, wife of Samuel F. Forbush, the sum of two hundred & fifty dollars... I also give & bequeath, to my daughter, Laura Warren, wife of Luther D. Warren, the sum of two hundred & fifty dollars... It is also my will & desire, & I do hereby direct, that the sums of money, herein before mentioned & bequeathed to my children, shall be paid to them by my son George E. Wait, (who is herein after named as my executor) in the order of times, in which they are herein named. He to make the payments of the said sums, as fast as he shall be able raise & procure the sum, by a diligent & careful prosecution of the [ ] of farming upon the farm which is herein before devised to him. It is not my desire or intention to require him to make sale of said farm, or any part thereof, for the purpose of making such payments. In case he shall not be able to pay & satisfy the said sums of money full within six years after my decease, I do hereby direct that he shall pay interest upon such portions as remains unpaid, after the term of six years... The Case for William and Adin Being Brothers The 1790 US Census for South Hadley lists two Wait families: William and Martin, both with males under 16 years, so Adin could belong to either family. Adin and William Sr. moved to Delaware Co., NY. A History of Delaware County states that Adin and William were early settlers at "Cockburn's Gore" and that William Wait was the first death in 1797. Franklin Co. - 1800 Federal Census (Wait, Adin 16; Wait, William 15)

The Hampshire County Waite Family page 6 The 1800 US Census index for Delaware CO, NY, lists Adin and one female, both aged 16-26. There is also a William with female, both 26-45, with 2 females under 10 years. Since this William would be b 1755-1774, this is William, Jr. b. 1765. Adin's obit places him in Granby MA (Granby had broken off from South Hadley) Wait, Adin died last week in Charlotte; native of Granby, Mass aged about 70 years. He was among early settlers of county, emigrated abt. 30 yr. ago... first located in Fredonia & built blacksmith shop on or near the spot now occupied by Col. Forbes handsome house, which he operated abt 10 years. (The Fredonia Censor 26 Dec 1848) William Wait's (William Jr. and Adin's father) second wife, Sarah, is buried in Adin's lot in Sinclairville Cemetery. In a letter written in 1841 by Stephen Tinkham, from the William D. Wait lineage, refers to "Uncle Adin and Emmy." Stephen Tinkham married Roxanna Wait, daughter of William Wait Jr. Adin had a daughter, Emma Waite, Female, b. 24 June 1810, Masonville, Delaware, NY married Samuel Flagg Forbush, Male. This letter clearly shows the relationship between William D. Wait and Adin Wait as brothers. The State road from Cherry Valley to Jericho (now Bainbridge and Afton) was opened in 1797, when settlers come and located along the road. Among the earlier settlers were Adin and William Wait, Daniel Scranton, Enos Goodman, Justin Nash, Peres Moody and son Moses, Asa Terry, Caleb Monson, Darius Smith, Timothy Eastman, Bernice Hazor, Silvester and Ebenezer Smith, Dr. Pliny Smith and Eli St. John. The Smiths and several of the others were from Massachusetts. (HDCNY) Enos Goodman settled on the gore, on the farm now owned and occupied by William Bixby, Esq., whose father, William, came from Vermont (one of the Vermont sufferers) and first settled on the Stebbins place, two miles east of Masonville post office, and in 1832 bought and moved on to the gore, as also did Peres Moody and son Moses, and Adin Wait, in 1797. (HDCNY) Children of Adin Waite and Tabitha Osborn were as follows: + 29 i Abigail 4 Waite. 30 ii Amanda 4 Waite, born 75, 76 2 Apr 1802 in Masonville, Delaware, NY; died 77 28 Mar 1883 in Charlotte Center, Chautauqua, NY.
