Going local (Unit 15A) A: It s Tuesday the 26th of January. The time is three minutes past five and you re listening to Home Time with me, Jeff Jones, on Romney Radio, your local radio station for the Romney Marsh and Appledore area broadcasting on 93.6 FM and online at www. romneyradio.com. And if you re watching us on the webcam, you can see that I have a visitor with me today. Hello Sue. B: Hi Jeff. A: Sue you re going to talk to us about money. Is that right? B: Yes. We all know the euro, the dollar, the pound. But do you know the Brixton Pound, the BerkShare, the Ithaca Hours, or the Plenty? A: No, I don t. Tell us more. B: Well, they are all examples of local currencies. And later in the programme I m going to talk to John Howlett, a local businessman, who wants to start a local currency in the Romney Marsh area. A: What are the advantages of a local currency? B: The idea is to spend money locally and to support local businesses. A: I see. So are local currencies going to take the place of other currencies like the euro or the dollar? B: No, I don t think so but that s one of the questions I m going to ask Mr Howlett at five thirty. A: Very good. Thanks, Sue. Before that we re going to bring you the traffic report, and some local news, and some music to help you relax after a hard day s work. Talking English (Unit 15B) Today I m going to talk to you about some of the differences between American English and British English. American English is similar to British English in many ways but very different in many ways. For example, some words are spelled differently. In British English the word colour is spelled C-O-L-O-U-R. In American English it s spelled C-O-L-O-R. We also often use different words to describe the same thing. In Britain people use a lift. In the US people use an elevator. In Britain people put petrol in their cars. American people put gas in their cars. Some prepositions are different also. In Britain people do things at the weekend. In the US people do things on the weekend. Our accents are also very different. I m speaking with an American accent. Now I m speaking with a British accent. We often pronounce words differently too. In the US this is called a tomato. In Britain this is called a tomato. Tomato, tomato. What do you call it? Global Beginner eworkbook Macmillan Publishers Limited 2010 Videoscripts 15
