Here's What's New from Varian, the Multi-Product, Quality Instrument Company. Downloaded via 148.251.232.83 on November 11, 2018 at 12:45:19 (UTC). See https:pubs.acs.orgsharingguidelines for options on how to legitimately share published articles. Varian instruments include those with the well-known brand names Aerograph, Anaspect, Cary, MAT, Techtron, and Varian. Whatever analytical technique you need from this broad selection from AA through GC and LC to NMR or UV-Vis (to mention a few) you get high quality performance with great value for the money. And a Varian expert sees to it that you get the best possible combination of hardware plus back-up, letting you focus on science problems, not instrument problems. Here are some of the new Varian instruments that can help your laboratory. The newest addition to a distinguished family of UV-Vis spectrophotometers: the three-in-one Cary 118 The Cary 118 for precise quantitative measurements and enzyme kinetics is a high performance UV-Vis spectrophotometer that is essentially three instruments in one. The Cary 118A version the best medium-priced, manual instrument available lets the lab with budget problems buy now and add recording or scanning capabilities later, when budget permits or applications demand. The Cary 118B version gives you fixed wavelength recording, while the 118C offers recording and scanning. Both A and Β versions can be easily upgraded to full recording scanning instruments, yet maintain their single-unit integrity. All versions give you the highest photometric accuracy of any commercially available spectrophotometer at 0.1 absorbance it's 0.00035 absorbance. Not only does this assure you of highly reliable data in quantitative work, but it's indispensible for precise difference measurements. In addition, the 118's patented optical system lets you mask the beam to 1 mm without degrading performance, so you can measure micro samples as small as 20 microliters using a 10-mm pathlength cell. The adjoining spectrum shows the quality of performance you can expect with micro samples. And there are many other important Jan. 22, 1973 C&EN 15

pluses: a variety of absorbance ranges; a no-backlash recorder; a digitally coupled wavelength scan and chart drive; the ease of interfacing to a computer; digital display of 1 _Sample: 17 β Estradiol _Concentration: 75.5 μηιοιβγ Solvent: Methanol > olurr ie: 3C fihte r j J ^ 2e 50 21 K) \ \ \ I 1 i r^! 1 1 1, full scale -O < CsJ 6 \ <x> ; ΓΤΤΤΊ >ance Rang! «Γ.. 1 ^_ < ι! 3C )0 320 nm I Even under conditions where small sample volume requires masking the beam drastically, the Cary 118 still produces outstanding spectra. Note the excellent signal-to-noise ratio in this curve. absorbance, %T, or concentration; the ability to record first derivative spectra; and a broad selection of accessories. In fact, there's so much to tell, we suggest you write for a brochure on this latest addition to the Cary family. Circle Reader Service No. 1. The renowned Cary 14... an outstanding research spectrophotometer for your lab Spectroscopists around the world recognize the Cary 14 for its many contributions to scientific research a reputation earned by the instrument's long-term reliability and the fact that the quality of the recorded data is unexcelled by any other spectrophotometer. Basic to the instrument is its prismgrating double monochromator. This combination of dispersing elements provides a resolving power better than 1 angstrom in the UV region, better than 3 angstroms in the near infrared. The Cary 14 performs all the usual UV-Vis studies plus a variety of near IR work not possible with an ordinary instrument. Throughout the 14 each component is manufactured with utmost care and craftsmanship to give you years of dependable service. Because of such attention to detail the 14 is a premium instrument. However, if you work only in the UV-Vis range but still need research-quality data, the Cary 14UV is available at a considerably reduced cost. It gives you all the performance of the standard 14 over the range 1860 to 8000 angstroms, but has no near IR capability. For a brochure and price list, circle Reader Service No. 2. The Cary 17... everything you'll ever need in a spectrophotometer Of the Cary family of spectrophotometers, the Cary 17 is undoubtedly the premier instrument. Outwardly it looks somewhat like the 14, and many of the mechanical and optical components are alike. But not the electronics. Here, the 17 is the superior instrument. It's not that the final data is any better, it's just easier to obtain. The solid state design of the 17 makes it possible to incorporate a number of features which simplify operation. For example, the pen fidelity meter and spectral bandwidth meter help the operator in setting the slit control, pen period, and scan speed to achieve optimum operating conditions. Other built-in features which enhance the 17's ease of operation include the digitally coupled scan and chart drive, a high intensity Vis-Near IR source, pen period control, and universal absorbance-%t slidewire. If you need the best spectrophotometer available one that offers exceptional performance, reliability, and operating convenience, along with the ability to adapt a variety of applications and operating conditions then the 17 should be your choice. varian instruments Stretch your budget and your lab's capabilities with the Techtron 635 Spectrophotometer The fourth member of our spectrophotometer family is the Varian Techtron 635, a low cost instrument that makes the most of a slim budget, yet more than meets your needs in routine analytical measurements or reaction kinetics. Undoubtedly, the basic manual 635 is one of the easiest spectrophotometers to operate. It has push buttons to select four ordinate ranges, zero offset, and scan speed; and reads out directly in absorbance, %T, or concentration on a large meter or a lighted 4-digit data display. Covering the wavelength range 190 to 900 nm, the 635 operates on the double beam principle to give a direct ratio measurement of sample-vs-reference. For kinetics work, a specialized version the 635K forms a complete system, including even a temperature readout accessory, to make kinetics measurements easier than ever. The large sample compartment (11.5 χ 12.7 χ 22 cm) lets you adapt the instrument to a variety of standard and special applications. And a full line of accessories further extends the instrument's versatility. Circle Reader Service No. 4. Presenting the brand new, old reliable T-60A Ν MR Spectrometer A contradiction in terms? Not at all. The old, reliable part of the T-60A is a heritage, a solid tradition of fine workmanship and dependability inherited from thet-60a's predecessor, the renowned System T-60. The brand new aspect includes a wide range of improved features sensitivity in excess of 30:1; resolution better than 0.3 Hz; resolution stability of 0.5 Hz per day; sweep widths of 25, 50, 100, 250, 500 and 1000 Hz; and sweep times of 50, 250, 500 and 1000 seconds. In addition, the old, reliable T-60A is designed to stay brand new for a long time to come, expanding its capability as you expand the scope of your research. If your applications are routine, or your budget isn't as hefty as it could be, start with a basic, inexpensive T-60A. Its high performance and ease of operation make it an excellent choice for use in dayto-day NMR work. When you're ready to expand your research capabilities, the T-60A permits you to do so quite easily by the addition of a full complement of plug-in modular accessories enabling you to undertake investigations requiring internal lock, variable temperature, wide sweep, and spin decoupling. And there's one more old feature that you're going to like best of all about the brand new T-60A its price. Because, in spite of all its improved capabilities, the T-60A costs no more than the System T-60 before it. For a brochure and price list on this brand new, old reliable spectrometer, circle Reader Service No. 5. Jan. 22, 1973 C&EN 17

Ε-Line... the something-for-everyone EPR Spectrometers Ε-Line Spectrometers are the most sensitive EPR systems in the world, something of importance to any scientist, newcomer or expert, who wants only the best when it comes to research results. Ε-Line's signal-tonoise ratio specification, using the E-231 Cavity at 100-kHz modulation on weak pitch without quartz inserts, is 90:1; in the standard E-233 Cylindrical Cavity, the signal-to-noise ratio is 150:1. An Ε-Line System gives you a wider dynamic range and better AFC lock than any other EPR system available. Ε-Line Spectrometers are reliable, versatile, and (as newcomers will be sure to appreciate), easy to use, too. And they're backed by an on-going program of applications development. For instance, Varian has a varied series of EPR applications notes scheduled to appear in the coming months, and has EPR workshops scheduled in the near future. For a copy of our Ε-Line brochure, circle Reader Service No. 6. Making the best Ν MR system better is no easy problem For instance, take the XL-100 Pulsed Fourier Transform NMR Spectrometer System, the industry standard for NMR research, easily the best. Making it better required strict adherence to a whole pragmatic approach, a long-range dedication to active engineering and constant improvement, the type of approach you don't even consider unless you're the world leader in NMR. And that's precisely the type of approach that Varian took to produce these recent XL-100 improvements: A new Wide-Gap 12-inch Magnet System widening the gap enough to permit variable temperature operation using 10-mm sample tubes without sacrificing field strength or homogeneity. A new Universal Probe to improve ^ coupling, reduce proton background, permit high power pulse NMR experiments, and allow an NMR frequency range of 7 to 100 MHz with a single probe. A new Console featuring improved signal-to-noise in both the analytical and lock channels and much more. Making the best better requires an active, on-going applications effort, as well. For instance, Varian NMR applications scientists are now using the XL-100 to study less sensitive, biologically important nuclei. Their results will be available soon. Send for a copy of this and future applications notes, and an XL-100 brochure. Circle Reader Service No. 7. New Varian A-5 Recorder features low cost and compact 5-inch scale size Many labs requiring a compact, low cost recorder, will find the new Varian A-5 Recorder an ideal answer for their needs. The A-5 features 12 chart speeds from 0.5 cmhour to 20 cm minute; four full scale ranges of 0-1, -10, -100 mvand 0-1 volt; 0.25-second pen response; full scale adjustable zero; better than ±0.5% fs accuracy. For data on the A-5 Recorder, circle Reader Service No. 8. Varian A-25 offers most versatility among laboratory recorders A precise, reliable recorder, the Varian A-25 with its 10-inch scale, makes a valuable addition to any laboratory. Its adaptability to a wide range of applications is achieved with 20 pushbutton-selected chart speeds from 0.01 inchminute to 1000 inches hour; ten full scale ranges from 1 mv to 1 V; switch selected filters for eliminating line frequency noise or spurious noise above 2 to 3 Hz; plus a wide choice of accessories and options, such as single or dual channels, event markers, alarm controls, and integrator. For data on the A-25 Recorder, circle Reader Service No. 9. 18 C&EN Jan. 22, 1973

This means you can get twice as much information in the same time as before. Saves time. Saves money. Just how well this works is shown in the chromatogram of a 0.25-microliter sample of peppermint oil, run using flame ionization and electron capture detectors. Note how much more information this dual detector system provides about sample composition than would have been available with just one detector. The difference is almost startling when comparing the last two major peaks in the ECD chromatogram with the small response for those peaks in the FID record. The ECD, FID, or any of our ionization detectors can be easily interchanged on the 2440's unique detector base. Other features of the Model 2440 include its large accessible oven, a prepunched panel that lets you add accessories quickly and conveniently, and a glass system from injectors to detector. Capillary, dual glass, and dual metal columns for simultaneous operation are easily interchanged. Also, the 2440 takes up only a 16-inch square of bench space.
