Tickets already purchased for any event or trip, even if expensive and/or a surprise gift. 4. A lot of homework. 9. Anything deemed unexcused by the assistant principals. 5. Group projects. Attendance is included as a major component of every KC band tryout. Absences / tardiness will affect band placement and positions of leadership. Please check the dates regularly and make early contact regarding potential issues. Performances Performances for every band member include: 1. Varsity Football Games. 4. Recitals at Klein Collins 2. Marching Contests 5. UIL Concert & Sight Reading Contest 3. Band Concerts at Klein Collins 6. Scheduled band Contests/Festivals/Concerts/ Solo & Ensemble Contests at scheduled location 7. Klein Collins Graduation Contact the band directors for any absence from a required performance, in advance. Requests for excused absences from performances must be made at least 3 weeks in advance. In an emergency situation, contact the band directors as soon as it is convenient for your family. Contacts for Mr. Rugila are 832-484-5305, school; 269-929-5360, cell; or crugila1@kleinisd.net. An unexcused absence from a performance will have consequences. Students cannot letter in band, hold or run for an office, be or tryout for drum major, captain, squad leader, or be a member of a crew, if they have an unexcused absence. In some cases, an unexcused absence could result in the student being removed from band or color guard. Marching Rehearsals Everyone must attend marching practice every day. Some students will begin as understudies but will move into principal positions or vice-versa. Every student will be scheduled to perform at more than one football game half-time. Schedule doctors appointments, etc., at times that do not conflict with band rehearsals. Attend the morning (before school) tutorials, test corrections and make up tests. Every department has at least one morning tutorial each week several have two mornings from which to choose. Make appropriate arrangements for piano or voice lessons not at Klein Collins, etc. in advance so that you do not miss a band rehearsal. Lessons for your instrument or voice taught at Klein Collins will work as long as you are only inside during your lesson time. Take advantage of the days no marching rehearsal is scheduled schedule appointments on the days off when possible. Please check with the band directors about the best time to schedule drivers education. Sectionals, Full Band Rehearsals There are no excused absences from these except for illness. The student with the conflict must reschedule the sectional or rehearsal for a time when everyone can be there. This is usually difficult to do; it is usually easier for the one student to reschedule his/her conflicting event than to reschedule everyone else. IT IS THE STUDENT S RESPONSIBILITY to do the rescheduling, not the band director s. Wind Ensemble has a weekly full rehearsal in addition to sectionals. Other bands will occasionally schedule full band rehearsals in addition to sectionals. Please watch the monthly calendars for full band rehearsals and plan accordingly. Region Auditions, Solos & Ensemble Wind Ensemble members are expected to audition for Region Band. Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band members are expected to perform solos at a competition. Every band member will perform in chamber ensembles and all eligible ensembles are expected to participate in solo and ensemble contests. Any student who chooses to enter must follow through with participating in the contest. I have read and understand the Attendance Policy and Performance Schedule. I will do my best to uphold the policies and principles of the Klein Collins Band. Parent Name (Printed) Student Name (Printed) Parent Signature Date Student Signature Date

KC Band Ensemble Descriptors Tiger Marching Band All woodwind, brass, percussion and color guard (with the exception of Fundamentals of Music class members) combine to form the Tiger Marching Band. The Klein ISD Course Descriptions publication lists participation in the marching band as a required element of every band course / class. Students earn PE credit through marching band. The actual number of minutes spent in marching must be at least as many as the number of minutes in a semester long PE class during the school day. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is mandatory. The Tiger Band performs at all varsity football games and at marching competitions. Students who are also members of other KC organizations, such as football and volleyball teams where required practice is at the same time as marching practice do need uniforms and will travel to varsity football games and marching contests. The performances of the marching band include all playing from pregame to postgame. The Tiger Marching Band is committed to the best in Musical Pageantry. Fundamentals of Music This course is designed for students who do not yet play their instrument well enough to march while playing. The course does not earn PE credit. The goal of the course is for students to develop the basic playing skills to a level where marching and playing is possible. Students are encouraged to participate in a solo & ensemble contest in the spring semester. The course is a one-year class. Varsity Band Membership is by audition. Varsity Band members should expect to participate in the Tiger Marching Band, attend all rehearsals scheduled for the band, perform on concerts and on the chamber ensemble recital. Students are expected to participate in ensembles at a solo & ensemble contest. Additional participation in region tryouts and solo competition is encouraged. The Varsity Band will participate in contests and festivals when possible, depending on instrumentation and eligibility of the members. Concert Band Membership is by audition. Concert Band members are expected to participate in the Tiger Marching Band; attend all scheduled rehearsals, chamber ensemble rehearsals, sectional rehearsals; attend all concerts, recitals, contests and festivals. The demand of the band literature and the individual responsibility for preparation is increased and will reflect the capability of the band as a whole. Concert Band members are expected to participate in ensembles at the KISD or UIL solo & ensemble contests and encouraged to participate with solos and Region / Freshmen band competitions. Because of the increase in individual responsibility, every student is encouraged to take private lessons to accelerate skill development. The Concert Band will participate in UIL Contests and Band Contests or Festivals in the spring. Symphonic Band Membership is by audition. Symphonic Band members are expected to participate in the Tiger Marching Band; attend all scheduled rehearsals, chamber ensemble rehearsals, sectional rehearsals; attend all concerts, recitals, contests and festivals. Students should have a strong commitment to band and a desire to improve as an individual musician. Symphonic Band members are expected to participate in solos and ensembles at the KISD solo & ensemble contest and must prepare the etudes for Region / Freshmen band competitions. Members are strongly encouraged to participate in the Region / Freshmen band competitions. Every student is encouraged to take private lessons where individual skills are refined and extensive help with solo and etude preparation is regular. The Symphonic Band will participate in UIL Contests and Band Contests or Festivals in the spring and the music prepared for these will be demanding high school literature. Wind Ensemble Membership is by audition. This is the varsity organization for band and members must schedule other activities around Wind Ensemble rehearsals and performances. Wind Ensemble members are expected to participate in the Tiger Marching Band; attend all scheduled rehearsals, chamber ensemble rehearsals, sectional rehearsals and a regular 2 hour afternoon or evening rehearsal weekly in the spring; attend all concerts, recitals, contests and festivals. Band should be a priority for Wind Ensemble members; desire to become an exceptional player is the norm. Wind Ensemble members are expected to audition for Region Band and to perform both solos and ensembles at the KISD Solo & Ensemble Contest. Members are strongly encouraged to participate in Region Jazz Band and / or Region Orchestra contests and in the UIL Region and State Solo & Ensemble Contests. Every student should take private lessons if at all possible. The Wind Ensemble will participate in UIL Contests and Band Contests or Festivals in the spring and the music prepared for these will be of the highest demand. The Wind Ensemble performed at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2007, at the Chicago Symphony Center in 2010, at Lincoln Center in New York in 2015, at Walt Disney World in 2017, and at The National Concert Festival in 2018. They will perform in other prestigious competitions in the future. When such a performance is scheduled, Wind Ensemble members and families must be willing to make the financial commitment that allows each student to travel to the competition. Additional Ensembles Membership in Jazz Band, which is a regular class during the school day, is by audition and restricted to students who are also enrolled in band, orchestra or choir. There must be room in the student s schedule for two band classes. Membership in the Symphony Orchestra is restricted to students who are also enrolled in band and orchestra classes. Rehearsals are after school, usually on Monday evening. Members must be committed to making rehearsal attendance a priority and be willing to make a financial commitment when travel is required. Membership in Color Guard / Winterguard is by audition. Members will learn to perform with flags, rifles and sabers with dance choreography. The Color Guard, in the fall, is part of the Tiger Marching Band and performs at football games and marching contests. The Winterguard performs in gyms in competitions in the spring. Expect additional financial demands for expert instruction. If you like dance performance, this may be just the organization for you!

Marching Band Code for students participating in Klein ISD Marching Band I. Membership A. All students who are members of a performing band and the color guard are also members of the marching band as defined in the KISD Guidance Handbook course descriptions. II. Attendance A. All band students must abide by KISD attendance policies. B. Attendance is required at all rehearsals, sectionals and performances. Absences and tardies will be excused in the following cases, if proper procedures are followed as outlined in individual school band handbooks: 1. Personal Illness. 2. Medical emergency or personal injury. 3. Death in the family. 4. Religious holiday. 5. Special circumstances, with sufficient notice, such as a family wedding.* C. Due to practice schedules, students in football, volleyball and drill team are exempted from marching band PRACTICE. Attendance at games/contests is still required. All other students are required to participate in daily rehearsals after school. Other school activities that may cause occasional absences/tardies will be addressed on an individual basis as necessary. D. Absences 1. Any unexcused absence from a marching rehearsal will result in loss of performance status. 2. Two or more absences from marching rehearsals (for any reason) and the student may be replaced in that week s show. 3. An unexcused absence from a performance will result in a loss of performance status and may result in removal from the band program. E. EXAMPLES of unexcused absences and tardies include, but are not limited to: 1. Work 2. Transportation not arranged. 3. Oversleeping 4. Anything deemed unexcused by the assistant principals. 5. Family trip. 6. Tickets already purchased for an event. F. Requests for excused absences and tardies must be made in advance. In case of illness or family emergency, contact must be made at the earliest possible opportunity. III. Percussion Camp / Color Guard Camp A. Summer Percussion / Color Guard camps are an integral part of the selection process for instrument/equipment assignments. There is no other practical way to adequately compare returning and new marchers in setting the instrumentation for the drum line/color guard. Lack of camp attendance does not prohibit membership in percussion/color guard. However, a student who does not attend camp may be limiting his/her opportunity for placement and instrument/equipment assignment. *A once-in-a-lifetime event.
