The purpose of this guide is to provide basic information about Prague Christian Library for all users. We hope that you will read the enclosed material carefully and will find it beneficial in using the library. Prague Christian Library November 2004
LIBRARY FACILITIES The library is located in four rooms on the ground floor at Baranova 32 in Prague 3. We are conveniently located a half block from Olsanske namesti tram stop. You can also come to the Flora metro station (Green line - A) and walk down the hill about five blocks. LIBRARY HOURS Currently the library will be open approximately 15 hours a week according to the following schedule: Monday Tuesday 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm LOCATION OF MATERIALS Books are catalogued according to AACR 2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules) under the author (editor, translator), title, subject matter and series Books are classified and shelved according to the Dewey Decimal Classification System. Shelf labels are provided to identify general categories. If you need assistance in finding a particular book, please check with the library personnel. Individual and bibliographic searches can be made by the library personnel. Reference books are marked with a red dot on the spine and can only be used in the library. Wednesday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm Collections for each language are maintained and shelved separately Thursday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm 2nd and 4th Saturdays 9:00 am - 12:00 pm (Closed on Czech holidays) Access is also available by appointment for special studies or needs. As the library continues to develop and grow, the hours of operation will expand and are subject to change, so please check with the library for the most current information. We would ask that you NOT reshelve any library materials that you may have used on site and return them to the front desk. OTHER LIBRARY SERVICES We can special order English language resources at cost to library users. Copies of materials can be provided at cost in accordance with established copyright law. Use of the library meeting room for special lectures and work shops. Fees will be commensurate with use. See Library Administrators for details.
USER FEES User fees will be charged according to the following schedule: ANNUAL PARTIAL Description of Categories: Individual 300 Kc Family 500 Kc Group/Institution 1500 Kc Full-time student 150 Kc Pensioner or Disabled 150 Kc 0-3 months (Individual) 125 Kc (Family) 175 Kc 6 months (Individual) 175 Kc (Family) 275 Kc Individual - Persons who do not qualify for other categories and pay for either a full or partial year s borrowing privileges. Family - Limited to members of an immediate family. Children 6 years and under do not need to have individual cards but other children can receive their own library card. Expanded borrowing privileges proportionate to the number of children up to four (4) books per person, will be allowed on the parent s card. Group/Institutions - Organizations can secure borrowing privileges for up to 7 persons at a time. Individuals must have proof of affiliation Full-time Student - Persons who are enrolled in full-time studies at a recognized high school or university. Individuals must have current identification and proof of enrollment. Pensioner - Persons who are age 65 or older or who currently draw a pension. Individuals must have proper identification. Disabled - Persons who are permanently disabled. Individuals must have proof of identification. APPLICATION PROCESS All who wish to have borrowing privileges must complete an application and pay the appropriate fees. Fees will help to cover the cost of service and book replacement due to normal use. Each applicant must provide two (2) passport size photos and proper identification (i.e. passport, residency or citizenship card, or other form of picture ID). A fee of 35Kc will be charged to replace a lost card. OVERDUE MATERIALS AND FINES Fines will be charged for overdue materials at a rate of 3 Kc per day for each resource overdue. Resources are due back at the close of business for the date stamped on the date due slip. The maximum fine possible will be limited to the replacement value of the book plus processing fees of 20%. Notices will be sent for books overdue for more than five days. However, not receiving a notice will not be considered a reason for waiving the fee. There will be a (2) two day grace period for overdue materials if the book is returned within (2) two days of being overdue. If it is not returned during this time period, then the fine will be charged for the entire period including the grace period days. Fines will continue to accrue for days the library is not open. If there is a problem returning a book due to an emergency, please contact the Library Administrators to make other arrangements. No books can be checked out or renewed if the borrower has outstanding fines or overdue library material.
CARE OF LIBRARY RESOURCES Library policies must be observed by all users to insure efficient service and availability of materials. To prevent damage to library materials, furniture and carpeting, food and beverages are not allowed in the library. There is also no smoking allowed in the library. Library users are asked to leave all bags at the front desk; coat racks are provided in the interior hallway. Frequent loss or failure to comply with any of the rules outlined in the Library User Guide may result in loss of checkout privileges. Library users are requested to show courtesy and respect for the rights of others. They should take responsibility for returning books and in the use of books and other library property. All overdue materials must be returned to the library or in the case of damaged or lost materials appropriate arrangements for reimbursement must be made before other materials may be checked out. Damaged resources are defined as those which are non-readable, or non-usable, with pages removed or torn beyond repair or otherwise disfigured. Any patron who has lost or caused damage due to neglect or mishandling of materials belonging to the library will be responsible for reimbursement for the cost of the item. This will include rebinding or processing cost. Damaged materials remain the property of Prague Christian Library. BASIC CIRCULATION POLICIES The library facilities are open to the general public. Anyone can use the library but you must have a valid library card to borrow books or other materials. Each library card holder will also be given a copy of this Library User Guide which will provide additional information about the library including specific circulation policies. As a condition for use, it is the responsibility of the user to read and abide by the policies and regulations contained herein. Borrowing privileges for most resources will be for three (3) weeks. Materials can be renewed for an additional loan period provided the items are not requested by another library patron. Library material can be renewed a maximum of two (2) times before they must be returned to circulation for a minimum of one week. If an item is checked out by another library user you may make a request for a "hold" on the item when it is returned. You will be notified when it is available for checkout. A hold will be placed for one week before the book is returned to circulation. Library materials can be renewed by phone or e-mail provided there is a means for written confirmation (ie the library patron must have e-mail) otherwise items must be renewed in person. The number of books or other materials which can be checked out by a single user at a given time is four (4). Reference books which are marked with a red dot cannot be checked out and are for use only in the library. The registered borrower is responsible for all materials borrowed and no materials can be lent to others. Cards are non-transferable. Patrons must come to the library in order to access materials. The person in whose name the card is issued must be present to check out books. A refundable deposit may be required to check out certain materials based on high replacement value. Certain books may be placed on reserve for use during special lectures or workshops held at the library.

When fully developed it will have 5000 English and Czech language resources--books, audio and video tapes, position papers, and periodicals-- which will provide for biblical understanding and which address issues of applied Christian living. The library will contain resources designed to encourage and enable readers to investigate the validity of the Christian faith, to gain greater understanding of biblical truth, and to develop and grow in their spiritual journey.
