SO7 The Comoser Aard-inning comoser Mary Alice Rich began her musical training in 5 th grade in the airmont Minnesota ublic schools under the direction o Don eterson and Linda Thomson. She studied violin ith Marilyn os through high school and attended the University o Illinois here she received her.m. in Violin erormance under aul Rolland. She began her Master s degree under Mr. Rolland and served as his teaching assistant until his death in 978. Under Sergiu Luca Ms. Rich comleted her M.M. in Violin erormance. She then layed in many roessional orchestras including the Tulsa hilharmonic the t. Worth Symhony and the Dallas Oera Orchestra. In addition she reelanced throughout the Dallas area taught at Texas AM University at Commerce and maintained a rivate teaching studio. Currently she serves on the aculty o the Dallas Symhony-sonsored Young Strings Scholarshi rogram or Arican-American and Hisanic students. In 99 Ms. Rich as diagnosed ith ocal Dystonia a criling condition in her let hand that concluded her days as a erorming violinist. It as at this time that she turned toards riting music. Her comosition teachers ere Ted Hansen Jack Waldenmaier and Winston Stone. or Ms. Rich music comosition became a natural extension o her teaching. Her music has been erormed throughout the United States and has reached audiences abroad as ell. Ms. Rich is a back-to-back st lace inner o the Texas Orchestra Directors Association Comosition Contest. Ms. Rich has also been recognized by The Dallas Songriters Association and ASCA or her suerb comositions. She is a member o the Texas Music Educators Association Texas Orchestra Directors Association ASTA ith NSOA here she received the Citation or Leadershi and Merit and the Texas State Chater o ASTA ith NSOA here she served or ive years as the String Solo estival Chair. Ms. Rich currently resides in Texas ith her husband ruce Wittrig a violinist ith the Dallas Symhony and their daughter Melanie. The Comosition One cool overcast aternoon I as alking in my neighborhood ondering the challenges o riting or young string students. As you kno they like to lay ast and they can t use much bo yet. O course a gentle key signature in irst osition is a requirement and certainly one must avoid uard extensions. Above all ithin these coninements the music must be un to lay and musically interesting. Suddenly a small musical theme oed into my head and I had to cut short my alk to hurry home to my iano to see here this theme ould take me! Thus began Thunder Dance. Shortly ater I d orked out the strings arts the rumbling cymbal and the otional iano art my riend Louise Rossi asked me to comose something or guitar and orchestra so her rincial Dr. Les lack could erorm ith her middle school orchestra. Earlier that year Dr. lack had erormed the ercussion art or my iece Call o the Drums ith great success and Louise anted to ollo u by eaturing him on guitar his rimary instrument. ecause o being ressed or time I decided to use hat I had ritten or Thunder Dance and add a guitar art to it. I m really glad I did because I ve come to see ho oular guitar is ith young eole and more schools are no oering guitar classes.
