The Orff Soure 89 Orff arrangements of traditional folk songs and singing games Correlates to Musiplay 1-5 sequened aording to tone set: sm lsm smd mrd s mrd ls mrd d l,s, ls mrd l,s, major minor by Denise Gagné With arrangements and editing by Judy Sills The purpose of this olletion is to provide the lassroom musi teaher with a large olletion of Orff arrangements of familiar folk songs and singing games, sequened aording to tone set. Most of the arrangements are of songs used in Grades K-5 of the Musiplay musi program. However, you do not have to use the Musiplay urriulum to make exellent use of the many arrangements in this olletion. Teahers using Musiplay will find the olletion invaluable in extending the Musiplay program to use the Orff proess. Teahers trained in Kodály methods will find the sequening very helpful in seleting repertoire. More information on Musiplay, inluding lesson plans, an be found at www.musiplay.a. Teahing an Orff Arrangement by Judy Sills Proess: The fundamental suess of the Orff approah to musi eduation is that it is based on ommunity. That is to say that everything is taught to everybody. * present the song in its totality * teah the melody on a neutral syllable * repeat the melody phrase by phrase, aumulating the phrases until the entire melody is learned * teah the words repeating the text several times using a variety of voal infletions, dynamis and tempi until it is seure * add aompaniment parts one at a time beginning with the bass. Eah part should be learned by everyone, preferably as body perussion patterns first, followed with a transfer to the instruments * reate movement if appropriate * always remember to allow opportunities for reative input from the hildren. This ould inlude reating an introdution, B setion, interlude or improvisation between verses using non-pithed or pithed instruments. * finish with a final performane whih inorporates the song with orhestration, movement and students reative work Remember that the songs and orhestrations are only a basis to provide eah teaher with a framework. It is within this framework that teahers hoose and adapt materials to fit the partiular needs of their lasses. Students with some experiene playing Orff arrangements should be enouraged to reate their own arrangements. 3

1. Engine Engine s m En - gine en - gine num - ber nine, Go - in' down the rail - road line. sand bloks train whistle sand bloks train whistle If the train goes off the traks, Game Diretions: This is a follow the leader game. The hildren form a line like ars in a train. The leader deides on an ation and the rest of the hildren must opy that ation. At the end of the song, the leader goes to the bak of the line and the seond in line beomes the leader. Have the hildren make a train whistle sound at the end of the song. Creative Ideas: 1. Have the students reate an introdution to the song using instruments that sound like a train. 2. Have the students reate 8 beat patterns using the words hugga and hoo. For example: Chugga Chugga Choo Choo Chugga Chugga Choo rest Have them play the patterns on body perussion or non-pithed instruments, or improvise melodies. Use the patterns as an introdution or an interlude between repetitions of the song. Will I get my mon -ey bak?. Musiplay: Musiplay 1 first edition #9, Musiplay 2 #4 4

For example: one, two, three-four, five. Play the rhythm of the word hain on non-pithed instruments as an introdution or B setion. Musiplay: Musiplay 1 #12 10. Cukoo s m -BM Sev - en, eight, lay them straight. 2 4 2 4 Cuk - oo, Game Diretions: The lass sings the question, Cukoo, where are you? One hild is seated with his bak to the lass, hiding his eyes. Selet one hild to sing ukoo on s-m. The hild in front has to try and guess who sang the solo. I allow only one guess or the game takes the entire musi lass and the hildren beome restless. I keep trak of who has had turns on my lass list, and at the same time evaluate how well the soloist is mathing pith. I usually take more than one period to finish the game. Creative Ideas: Have individual students use melodi improvisation to ask the question on melodi instruments set up in C pentatoni, and have another student make up silly answers. Cukoo where are you? I m in the loset. Musiplay: Musiplay 1 first edition #35, Musiplay 1 Revised 2005 #36 *Note: If you prefer, have the students play Counting Song and Cukoo in the key of F or G. 9 Nine, ten, a big fat hen. where are you? Cuk - oo, Five, six, pik up stiks. Eleven, twelve, dig and delve. where are you?
