About the Comosition Live On as commissioned by Dilomat Middle School's sta, aculty and students, in Cae Coral, lorida, and is dedicated to the memory o their Director o Bands, Linda Mann. Director o Orchestras, Roland orti, chamioned the commissioning o this iece to honor the lie o Linda ater her untimely assing in ebruary o 07. Linda Mann s imact on the ield o music education as roound and ide-reaching. She as a beloved member o the sta at Dilomat Middle School, as ell as the music community o Cae Coral and the state o lorida. Linda as highly resected throughout the state, serving as recent ast-resident o the lorida Bandmasters Association. In discussing the tye o iece the school anted to honor Ms. Mann, they indicated the iece should deict Linda s ersonality: dynamic, sassy, yet thoughtul and almost mentor-like. They anted a iece that as ubeat, yet still had moments that ere thoughtul, ortraying the grie that the Dilomat Middle School community has suered rom the sudden loss o such a beloved teacher. or romotional use only unlaul to coy or rint Ater contemlating their thoughts, I did some research to ind insiration or the iece. This led me to oetry about grie and loss. In time, I stumbled uon a short, yet oignant oem that I elt erectly deicted the sentiment that I anted the iece to convey. That oem is entitled Live On by Chrissie inney. Live On No as I live on Without you I hoe to kee The ieces o you That I loved so dearly Your mannerisms And comassionate character And smiles through struggle So that you May live on too Chrissie inney I reached out to Ms. inney, and she graciously agreed to allo me to quote her oerul oem in these notes. She exressed that she as deely touched that her ork ould insire me to rite a iece in honor o Linda Mann. The iece begins ith a oignant, ensive oening section. The use o the musical interval o a tritone beteen the irst to oenly voiced chords are used to reresent the sadness e all eel rom this tye o loss. When I sat in ront o my iano and started to ork on this iece, my hands seemed to naturally and immediately lay these irst to chords, hich set the rocess in motion o comosing the iece. Ater the somber oening, the iece shits to a himsical theme that I hoe brings about hay thoughts o Linda and her ersonality. It as also my intent, hoever, to include some musical dissonance in the theme that still relected the bitterseet loss at the same time. The iece develos into a secondary theme that is a quasi inversion o the main ast theme. This section is olloed by a return o the oening material, ith sniets o the ast theme intertined, beore the iece builds to a triumhant, augmented resentation o the main theme in a lush orm to comlete the ork.
