Emma welcomes him and takes him to the match. COMMENTARY (CONT D): COMMENTARY (CONT D): COMMENTARY (CONT D): Immediately Manni is excited by the atmosphere of London Rangers and meets the club s top striker Paul Carter. Some of the stewards don t recognise Manni and throw him out of the ground. Emma looks for him everywhere... Have you seen Manni? No, I haven t. COMMENTARY...but now Manni is lost in London. Hello? (CONT'D)Sorry, who is this? (WHISPERING) Who is it? (WHISPERING TO ): It's Manni's father. (TO THE PHONE) Oh, yes, Manni has arrived safely... (CONT'D)Oh, no, you can't speak to him at the moment because... he's not here - well, I mean, he is here in England, but he's not here, at the moment, in his room 1

('S FATHER SPEAKS, REPEATS WHAT HE SAYS) Where is he? Well, I'll just check. Sophie was with him last. (DESPERATE) Sophie, where's Manni? Downstairs. (INTO THE PHONE) He's downstairs. He's in the shower. He's downstairs, in the shower... yes, yes, he s in the downstairs shower.. (CONT'D) (ANSWERING A QUESTION FROM 'S DAD)Oh yes, of course there is a shower in his room. It's just that... (CONT'D)Look, sorry, I've got to go. Would you like to leave Manni a message? Yes of course, I'll ask him to call you back. Thank you, bye! Did he believe you? He thought I was crazy... Hello? Hi, Joe. Any news? (BEAT) No, there's no sign of him here either. He could be anywhere... Well, I don't know what to do next. Wait a minute, there he is. Manni, Manni! Wait, I think we've found him. Manni! Sorry. I thought you were a friend of mine. 2

No, no it wasn't him. Look, we'll keep looking alright. Call me if you find him. Okay. Bye. (TO ) (EVASIVE) (SUSPICIOUS) Is everything alright? Yes, of course. Everything's fine. I haven't seen Manni all evening. Isn't he with you? Er.., no... And the other new player... (HE CHECKS A LIST)...Peter King, hasn't checked in yet. No? Oh, Don't worry. They both decided to go and watch the match... So where are they now? The match finished ages ago. They're both still at the stadium. Why? (STRUGGLING) They're just meeting everybody there... there's no problem. JIM Do you want a drink before you go out? I don't know. I'll see what Emma wants to do. Hi, Paul. Hi, Emma. Are you ready? Look, I'm really sorry, but I can't go out with you tonight. Why not? 3

(KEEPING HER VOICE DOWN, MOVING AWAY FROM ) Because we still haven't found Manni. Apparently, two of the stewards threw him off the grounds... JIM JIM Yeah, we saw them do that. What do you mean? You mean you SAW them throw him off the ground? Well, yeah, I mean, well, we saw the stewards throwing Manni off the pitch, anyway. But you told me earlier that you hadn't seen Manni. (EASING HIS WAY OUT OF A TIGHT CORNER) Yes, darling, but at the time we didn't know it was Manni on the pitch, did we? We thought he was some kind of hooligan. (LOADED TO JIM) Didn't we? JIM Yeah, yeah, that's right... A hooligan. (CHARMING) Look, we couldn't see who it was on the pitch, we honestly didn't know it was Manni. Yeah, yeah, of course. Well, look, I can't come out tonight if Manni is still lost Look, he's a big boy. He can look after himself. (CHARMING) Forget about him for a while and come out with me instead. We ll have a meal, just the two of us. I can't. I've got to find him... Well, it's your loss darling... Look, I'll see you tomorrow... I promise. 4

(TO JIM) I guess it's just going to be you and me for drinks then, Jim... WOMAN WOMAN(IN) Stop! Thief!! He's stealing my bag! No, I wasn't! Help! POLICEWOMAN Is there a problem? WOMAN He tried to steal my bag. Look, I'm getting kind of hungry so we'll stop and get something to eat and then carry on. Alright? WOMAN... And he was about to run off with my bag when you came along. POLICEWOMAN (TO ) So, what have you got to say for yourself? WOMAN(IN) It s a big mistake. I couldn t find my hotel and I bumped into this woman and she dropped her bag, okay. And then I went to pick it up. and then you came along. He's lying! I want him arrested! No, Please! I'm lost. I can't find my hotel. There he is! Oh great! He's got himself arrested! POLICEWOMAN Are you on holiday? No, I am here playing with London Rangers. Football. I just arrived today. 5

(CONT'D) (DESPERATE) Please. Okay, I'm not a thief. You've got to understand. Manni? Joe! Are you okay? POLICEWOMAN Do you know this man? Yeah. Well, I met him today. You see, I play football for... POLICEWOMAN(IN) London Rangers? (IN) Yeah. There was a mix up at the ground and Manni was thrown out by mistake... Look, what's happened? I couldn't remember the name of the hotel! POLICEWOMAN (PERSISTING) Do you know where Manni is staying? WOMAN The Millhouse Hotel. Yes, that's it! Well, maybe I made a mistake. Have you telephoned the police? No... Well, I think maybe you should. Oh, thank goodness! I'm so pleased you're OK! (CONT'D)You must be hungry. Would you like to eat in the restaurant, or should I send some food up to your room? 6

(BLAGGING) (TO ) No, it's okay.. I just really need to get some sleep. Emma? What's the matter? What's happened to Manni? Nothing. He's been out with Joe and Peter. Seeing the sights. Yeah. London's very nice... At night... I think Manni needs a good night's sleep. Don't you? I'll show you to your room. Okay. Thanks Joe. (TO ALL) Good night. Good night. Yes? RECORDED VOICE Good morning! This is your seven am wake-up call. Good morning! This is your seven am (O.S.) Hi! (CONT'D)You're looking very smart! (HUMOROUS) You're a bit over-dressed for training! He'll be fine. Are you OK? You had a really bad experience last night. Forget it. I'm just a bit tired, that's all... 7

(CONCERNED) Yeah, you look tired. Would you like some coffee? It might help wake you up. (CONT'D) (CHEEKY) Thanks, that would be great. Okay, I'll get some for you. What's wrong with you? You look really down. I'm feeling really nervous. About training? I can't wait! Hi, Manni! Did you sleep OK? Could have slept for days. Yeah, I bet. It s a long flight. Listen, I'm driving into the club, can I give you a lift? That'd be great. Thanks. Yeah, at least that way if I drive you, you won't get lost a second time. What's the name of this hotel again? (GRINS, KNOWS HE'S BEING WOUND UP) It's called The Millhouse. Just checking! You know we need this contract with London Rangers. If Alex Carter finds out what happened with Manni last night... Don't you think I know that? Look, it really wasn't my fault. Whose job is it to look after Manni? 8

Mine......And who was responsible for meeting Peter from the railway station? OK, I admit I forgot to meet Peter... So who's responsible for all this? (CONT'D) I'm sorry to put so much pressure on you, Emma, but I need you to be good at your job. The money from the football club is very important to the hotel. Do you understand what I'm talking about? You're right. I'm sorry. Yesterday was a disaster... OK. Well, just don't let it happen again, okay? So, still nervous? Very. You'll be fine once you get on the pitch. Come on. It's Manni's birthday today! (CONCENTRATING ON SOMETHING ELSE) Is it? Why didn't he tell us? We should do something for him. To make up for last night, you mean? Yeah. We could get him a birthday cake, or throw him a party or something. Yes, it'd be nice to make him feel more at home. (CONT'D) (SARCASTIC) And perhaps we could pay for it out of your wages. 9

You can have those two pegs there, yeah. (TO THE ROOM) Say, lads! What about this! Nice jacket! ANDY Good morning Gentlemen. Just in case you haven't all been introduced yet: this is Manni and this is Peter; they re joining the club on a month's trial. I hope that they'll become professionals with London Rangers - and I also hope that you will all do what you can to make them feel at home. On the pitch boys. Come on, you two! I want you out on the pitch, now. ANDY Let's do some passing. Working in pairs! Alright lads, get in twos. Sharpish! What is Sophie doing? I don't know. She's assessing your level of fitness. Is she good? Yeah, she's got a qualification in sports science and an olympic medal! Wow! Is she your girlfriend? (LAUGHS) No, no! We're just old friends! Okay. 10

We went to college together in America. Come on lads, a bit more effort! I'm exhausted!! Yeah, me too! (JOKEY) (SARCASTIC) So what's all this then? It s a birthday cake for Manni. You're going to a lot of trouble for this new footballer aren't you? Well, it's my job to make him feel welcome. Besides, I thought somebody ought to do something to help Manni celebrate his birthday. Very nice. Keep your fingers off the cake! Sorry! I only hope you look after me as well when my birthday comes around! Yes, but you're not exactly eighteen are you?! Alright lads, that'll do. Get in to those showers! (CONT'D) Not you two. (CONT'D) Right. You've done OK today, but you're not used to our way of playing. You're not fit enough, or fast enough for our game yet. That's why I want you to train with the youth team, for the time being. The youth team? 11

Don't worry. You haven't done badly. It's what I expected. I just wanted to see you play with the first team to begin with, just to see. (CONT'D) And, by the way, in my team the new players help out with all the jobs. (CONT'D) I want you to clear up all of these cones. You can have your showers when you've finished! But that is.ridiculous. (IN/PERSISTENT) Are you deaf or something? Move it! Linger? Jim? Okay, after lunch we go to the snooker club. And I'll beat you all. Hey, are you two OK? Not really. I, I didn't play very well this morning and the manager has asked us to train with the youth team. You did okay! It was your first time. You've got nothing to worry about, Manni, really!! Very nice jacket, Manni. (CONT'D) We wouldn't want it to get wet, would we? What are you going to do with it? Isn't that a bit of dirt on it? I think it needs cleaning! (CONT'D) What do you think lads? Manni? Peter? (CONT'D) Sophie is going to be looking closely at you both over the next month, so you'll be working a lot with her, okay? 12

JIM Be careful lads, she looks okay but she's really tough. (TO AND ) Thank you, Jim. Get into those showers. Here is a list of the food I want you to eat. I'll be watching your running and weight training, but not until later once you have had chance to settle in. Get as much rest as possible! No late nights. OK? So much to understand! And tonight we're going to have a party for Manni, to celebrate his birthday. OK? (FEELING UNNERVED) What are they doing? I don't know. Peter! Paul, could you come to my office for a minute? Yes, sure. Happy birthday, Manni. Thank you, thank you very much! Thanks! 13

The only problem is - you're not allowed to eat too much of this cake, OK! And we're going to have a party tonight to celebrate your birthday! Blow out the candles then! (SURPRISED) I'd like you to look after Manni for me, help him, make sure he's happy. OK, I will if you want. Why do you want me to do it? You saw him in training this morning. I think Manni could be really good. (HE DIDN'T) Yeah? I'm very excited by him. I think he could be great for the club, if we look after him properly. He obviously needs building up physically, but he s got great footwork. I didn't see anything that special. If he develops the way I hope, then you and he could become the 2 main strikers in the team. (INCREDULOUS) Really? (IRONIC) Yes, Paul. I mean it. Maybe he could even take your place one day! You what? So will you look after him for me? Yeah, sure. Of course I will. And, son: when are you going to come over to the house again - your mother hasn't seen you for ages. 14

I m sorry, I've just been really busy. Why not come over for supper tonight, then? I don't think I can come tonight - Manni is having a party. A party? Yeah. All the players are invited. But if I can, I'll try and pop round to the house, OK? Hi! Thanks again for the cake and the card. How did you know it was my birthday? From your passport. Come in, if you like. Are you feeling better? I'm really sorry about last night. No, forget it. I feel stupid because I couldn't even remember the name of the hotel. (CONT'D) What are these? Oh, they re just shirts that I make. I love making clothes. They're great! Do you think so? I'm not so sure - but I love making them, choosing the materials, the colours, thinking up new designs. Look. So, this your.., (REMEMBERING THE WORD AGAIN)..hobby? Yeah. I earn money from working in the hotel and that pays for my design course, but I'd love to be a fashion designer. I think you could! This one s lovely! 15

You can have it if you like! As a birthday present. No, really. I couldn't possibly... Please do, if you really like it. (CONT'D)You could wear it to the party. (ENTHUSED) That's a great idea! OK. So, how do you usually spend your birthdays Manni? Well I usually go out with friends, dancing, you know. Do you have a girlfriend back home? Yes, I do. Lucia. She's gorgeous. Is that Lucia? Yes. Listen, thank you for organising the party. It's fantastic. It's made me feel really at home. Good. But maybe I should go. I don't want to be tired for training tomorrow, you know. No, nor do I. We should go. No way. It's your birthday. You've got to enjoy yourself. Come and have a dance. Come on. Come on. Okay. It's getting late. 16

Sorry to stop all the fun, but I just want to say that the reason we are here tonight is to wish Manni a very happy eighteenth birthday. (CONT'D) And to wish him all the best of luck while he's with us here at London Rangers. (CONT'D) Over the next few weeks, we'll get a chance to see how good you really are and we all hope you make it as part of the team. Now, maybe Manni would like to say a few words? JIM Erm. I don't know if I will be a good footballer, but Course you will mate! Well. Thank you. Let's hear it for Manni! And thank you for the party. Hey, no problem. It's a good way of getting to know you. But now I've really got to go to bed, okay. No way! You can't leave now! But I'm really tired. OK, you can go. On one condition: we all go back to your hotel for one last drink? OK? Come on! Emma! Could you make sure Charlie's out of the way - we don't want to get Manni into trouble! Listen, Paul - Manni doesn't want people coming back, he's exhausted... (TO ) Is that right, Manni? 17

No, it's OK. We can continue the party for a while... Are you sure? Yes, yes. (V.O.) (AWKWARD) (V.O.) Hello? Hi Paul. Oh, hi, dad. Sorry I didn't come over. The party went on, well it's still going on actually... Still goi ng on?! What do you mean? Well, I tried to stop them, obviously, but they all went back to the Millhouse... So they're having a party at the Hotel? Yes... JIM JIM (NO HE ISN'T) Have you got any music Manni? Over there. Come in. Alright. Nice one. Are you sure about this? Yes. It s okay. Anyone for a game? 18

Don't you think it's time we let Manni get some sleep? We're just having fun, darling. JIM JIM What's going on? I think it might be time for us to get out of here! Why? What's up? Trust me, you won't want to be here in a minute... Hello Alex! What are you doing here? I heard some players are having a party, Charlie. No way! Not while I'm on duty. We'll see. Which room is Manni in? Room 113, but I'm sure... JIM REVELLERS Time to go home I think. I'm right behind you mate. twenty-five, twenty-six, twenty-seven Everyone out! Now! (CONT'D) (FURIOUS) I'm giving you a great opportunity at London Rangers and this is how you thank me? I am this close to sending you back home right now! 19
