Clare Hall: A 50th Anniversary Portrait A Message from the President About the Book On my first day as President of Clare Hall, a little over two years ago, I realised how different an institution it was even to the college of which I had been a Fellow only the day before. Is there anywhere else in the world where there is such a mix of scholars across all disciplines, of all ages, and from all over the world, and with absolutely no hierarchy? There is, furthermore, the wonderful music, the art exhibitions, the Tuesday night colloquia, the literary groups, the Tanner and Ashby Lectures, and a host of informal gatherings. As we move towards our fiftieth birthday in 2016, we have the opportunity to reflect on our past and look to the future. This book celebrates not only the vision that led our founding fathers in 1966 to create a collegiate institution to welcome a small but elite body of students from around the world, an eclectic fellowship, and a first-class programme of Visiting Fellowships, but its continuing legacy and development. I hope you will join me in supporting this project by subscribing to purchase a copy and by contributing to the College archive your reminiscences and photographs. Clare Hall will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its foundation in 2016. To commemorate this important event, the College has commissioned the publication of Clare Hall: A 50th Anniversary Portrait, a full-colour, richly illustrated book which chronicles the development of the College, from its inception to its plans for the future, from the perspective of those who were there. As is appropriate for such an egalitarian institution, contributors are drawn from the entire community from the earliest founding Fellows and former Presidents, to current Research Students, Visiting Fellows, friends and College staff. Originally conceived by Senior Members of Clare College as a centre for advanced research, Richard Eden recounts how Clare Hall was founded as a separate institution in 1966 and achieved its own Royal Charter in 1984. Its buildings, designed with the needs of families in mind, were the work of Ralph Erskine, famous for innovative social housing projects such as the Byker complex in Newcastle. Opened in 1969, the buildings concept and significance in contemporary architecture are examined by Deborah Howard, while the evolution of the magnificent gardens in which they are set is detailed by John Parker. The seven presidencies are recalled by an array of distinguished Fellows and others discuss the worldrenowned Tanner and Ashby Lectures, the remarkable College art collection with its emphasis on local artists and the genesis of College music. This volume will be lavishly illustrated with images drawn from the College archives and from personal collections. David Ibbetson President, Clare Hall
