2 2013 UP YOUR LAUGHTER QUOTIENT. LAUGH LONG AND LOUD. A robust rib- rattler improves not only your mood, but also your health. The physical act of laughing helps you stay alert, makes it easier to cope and lets you maintain your sanity when the world gets a little crazy. ADMIT YOU RE HUMAN...laugh at yourself. People who have mastered Living- 101 take their work seriously but not themselves. Knowing the difference gives you the keys to the kingdom. UP YOUR LAUGHTER QUOTIENT. Nothing may be more important to your health and happiness. It has been said the average American laughs 15 times daily. SO eat your broccoli and get a megadose of Vitamin L every day. GENERATE MIRTH wherever you go. Good humor is the best social lubricant. It smoothes understanding, communication and cooperation. Make it your mission to elicit as many smiles as you can each day. HELP YOURSELF SUCCEED without stressing out. Humor is nature s antidote for tension. Let it be your secret weapon when you re up to your eyeballs in alligators. It s fast, it s fun, it s free. No other stress buster can make this claim! TAKE YOUR FUNNY BONE TO WORK (or to the Senior Center). Instigate laughter on the job. Treating co-workers with respect and a sense of mirth does miracles for teamwork and trust. EMBRACE THE NOTION that humor is NOT incompatible with dignity and stature. Humor is the hole that lets the hot air out of a stuffed shirt. Follow the lead of Lincoln, Reagan and JFK who knew that humor is vital in overcoming adversity. REMEMBER THAT LAUGHTER and longevity go hand in hand. Grumps don t live longer it just seems like it. A buoyant outlook may be more important than oat bran an pushups, and it s a lot easier to take. So get in the zone: Love life, laugh a lot, last longer. The Bethany Villager WWW.BETHANY-VILLAGE.ORG Laughter is Strong Medicine for Mind and Body Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert. With so much power to heal and renew, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health. Laughter is good for your health Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infectionfighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease. Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain. Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.

THE BETHANY VILLAGER 3 Joke Corner Three Elderly Sisters Three sisters, ages 92, 94, and 96, live in a house together. One night the 96-year-old draws a bath. She puts one foot in and pauses. She yells down the stairs, "Was I getting in or out of the bath?" The 94-year-old yells back, "I don't know. I'll come up and see." She starts up the stairs and pauses. Then she yells out, "Was I going up the stairs or down?" The 92-year-old is sitting at the kitchen table having tea and listening to her sisters. She shakes her head and says, "I sure hope I never get that forgetful." She knocks on wood for good measure. She then replies, "I'll come up and help both of you as soon as I see who's at the door." April Showers Bring May Flowers The day begins all sunny and bright; It fills a young heart entirely with delight. Then, suddenly the sky turns dark, Like a horror movie during the approach of a killer shark. Clouds turn from that cottony white TO a dark grey that is as black as night. Next, that smell pollutes the air, That smell that only comes this often one month a year. The scent of damp leaves creeps nearer and nearer The smell of a major rainfall now becomes clearer. The air pressure begins to fall; I feel like I am carrying, on my shoulders, the entire shopping mall. Now, as I stand outside in only my new sundress I realize that I have left my arms vulnerable for goose bumps to caress. I can hear the wind howl all around, Sounding like a livid cat shrieking at a hound. I flee to my house as that soft pitter patter begins to fall Then grows to the great Civil War, refusing to stop at all. I feel my cheery mood begin to disperse From happy-go-lucky to something much worse. Outside, the only thing I can hear is drip drop, drip drop. Inside my heart, the only thing I can feel is flip flop, flip flop. I try to play a game, then read an old novel But, to my dismay, the only thing I want to do is find Mother Nature and grovel. Finally, when I begin to loose hope of reaching the end, Mother Nature decides to send a glow from around the bend. I can see the gentle breeze blow the storm clouds away And throw the reins on the rain to hold it at bay. When I look outside, the sun begins to shine And I look in that garden that I call mine. From the ground peaks a little button of green And I know that May s breathtaking violet crocuses will soon be seen. Stephanie Selleck Adult Social Day Club The Adult Social Day Club is now available Monday, Wednesday and Friday! I you are a caregiver and need a few hours to run errands or just need a respite, give Michelle Kelly a call at 607-738-6618. Easter Tea at the Manor

THE BETHANY VILLAGER 5 Earth Day 1970 capitalized on the emerging consciousness, channeling the energy of the anti-war protest movement and putting environmental concerns front and center. The idea came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. Senator Nelson announced the idea for a national teach-in on the environment to the national media; persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his cochair; and recruited Denis Hayes as national coordinator. Hayes built a national staff of 85 to promote events across the land. As a result, on the 22nd of April, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values. Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. "It was a gamble," Gaylord recalled, "but it worked." How Can you Participate in Earth Day? Make pine cone birdfeeders- Attract birds right to your yard and watch them as they enjoy a healthy snack. Making pine cone bird feeders is a fun and easy activity. Plant a vegetable garden- April is the perfect time to plan your garden. Plant flowers at a local non-profit organization or church. Contact the organization prior to planting. Most of these organizations are thrilled when someone offers to beautify their grounds. Clean up litter at a local park- Parks provide places for everyone in the community to enjoy nature. Unfortunately, litter detracts from their beauty and can be dangerous to people and animals. Bring bags and wear gloves to pick up unsightly trash from your city park. Go on a nature hike- Nature hikes are a great way to appreciate the beauty of our planet. Pick a park or nearby trail, or visit a new place every year on Earth Day. Russian National Ballet Theatre - SWAN LAKE Tuesday, April 16, 2013, 7 p.m. Tickets: Adult - $30 Full-length Ballet in Four Acts Music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov The esteemed Russian National Ballet Theatre brings to our stage one of the most magical and wellknown works from the classical ballet repertoire. This stunning fantasy ballet is inspired by the German legend of Odette, a beautiful princess turned into a swan at the hand of an evil sorcerer. With majestic choreography by Petipa, unforgettable score by Tchaikovsky, and exquisite costumes and sets, it is easy to see why Swan Lake continues to earn the adoration of classical ballet enthusiasts and attract newcomers to this magnificent art form.

THE BETHANY VILLAGER 6 Theories of origin: The origins of April Fools' Day are obscure. The most commonly cited theory holds that it dates from 1582, the year France adopted the Gregorian Calendar, which shifted the observance of New Year's Day from the end of March (around the time of the vernal equinox) to the first of January. According to popular lore some folks, out of ignorance, stubbornness, or both, continued to ring in the New Year on April 1 and were made the butt of jokes and pranks on account of their foolishness. This became an annual tradition, according to this version of events, which ultimately spread throughout Europe. A major weakness of the calendarchange theory is that it fails to account for an historical record replete with traditions linking this time of year to merriment and tomfoolery dating all the way back to antiquity. Fake Out Cookie Recipe for April Fools Day Original recipe makes 16 dogs 1 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 4 drops red food coloring 3 tablespoons flaked coconut 2 drops green food coloring 1 (4.5 ounce) tube prepared yellow frosting Directions: 1.In a medium bowl, cream together the butter, confectioners' sugar and vanilla until smooth. Stir in the flour until dough is smooth. Remove 1 cup of dough, then cover and refrigerate remaining dough. Knead the red food coloring into the 1 cup of dough until the color of a hot dog is achieved. Refrigerate all dough for 1 hour. 2.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Divide the red dough into 16 portions. Roll each piece into a 2 1/2 inch long sausage shape. For buns, divide the white dough into 16 portions and shape into 3 inch logs. Slice them almost in half lengthwise. Spread the buns open and place the hot dog doughs inside, leaving buns open. Place 2 inches apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. 3.Bake for 12 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven, or until firm. Remove from cookie sheets to cool. In a small jar or plastic bag, combine the coconut and green food coloring. Shake until coconut is evenly colored. Sprinkle over hot dog cookies when cool and make a zig zag with the yellow frosting for mustard.
